SOCIAL MEDIA
This post was inspired by Essena O’Neill, an australian model with over half a million instagram followers that quit social media last week.
Social media gives you a voice. A voice that allows anyone to listen to you. I’ve never been a person to obsessively care about social media. There was a point in my life last year, when my twitter life was more important to me than my real life, but that period is long gone. I don’t use social media as a business, sometimes to promote my artwork but nothing more. I’ve had this blog for over 3 and a half years now and essentially my teenage years can be defined by my archive. At first I spent hours and hours reblogging depressing quotes and pictures because I thought they defined me. Because I thought they were cool. I soon discovered this was not the case and moved on to the reblogging posts that I could relate to and enjoyed. I was never a blog to promote myself, merely one to post my interests. I’ve heard of many “celebrities” that have become famous through tumblr, like Acacia Brinley. That was never my aim through tumblr. I never wanted fame, just to be party of something. Even now, after three and a half years, I have under 1k followers. And does it bother me? No. I really couldn’t care less about how many people follow me. It’s nice to know people do, but that number doesn’t dictate my social media life. Sometimes I go on tumblr and reblog things I like, Sometimes I spend weeks ignoring the fact I actually have an acount on this website. But know I want to start using it again. To start using this voice I have created. I can post my ideas, opinions, suggestions, anything I want on here because this is my blog, and I can dictate my own standards.
I’ve watched countless videos of Youtube stars that have had meltdowns because they no longer know what to make to please their audience. Whilst watching these videos, I ask myself, why? Why do they care so much about pleasing their audiences? They should just care about doing what they love. Nothing else. But this isn’t the case. Most internet stars use youtube and other social medias as a way to make money, sometimes as their only income. This fact dictates what they can and can’t upload to the internet and sometimes creating this whole different person just to make money can be too much.
Numbers, likes, followers... they don’t matter. I want people to follow me because they like what I publish, because they enjoy reading what I have to say, because they think I’m funny. I don’t want to force “Follow me and I’ll like your recent posts” down people’s throats. I get that everyday on Instagram and it’s exhausting. So many people have “Next goal> 50K” in their bios and it makes me so sad. Numbers will not make you happy. If you’ve had a youtube channel for 6 years and after working hard creating content that makes you happy, you reach 1 Million subscribers, I’ll be happy for you. That’s amazing. 1 Million people appreciate your work. Fantastic. I don’t have a problem with that. What I’m trying to say is that you shouldn’t have numbers as your goal. It’s useless. You’ll reach 1 Million and “Wow!, I did it!”. Congrats, But it won’t last. You’ll just want more and more if that’s your aim.
Social Media allows you to have fun posting content you’ve created, and if you can make a living out of it, I’m really happy for you, but remember who you really are outside of that virtual world. Don’t create a false image of yourself to please others. That will make you depressed. And you do not want that. Please remember who you really are.
