AN:  I wasn’t kidding about my Alice x Uncas feelings.  AU where they didn’t die, just going to be a quickie little three parter.

Uncas was badly wounded.

Alice heard Cora whisper to Nathaniel, giving him a brief, terse summation of his brother’s wounds.  Gunshots, knife wounds, it was by God’s grace that he even breathed at all.  Cora would do all she could but they must all pray for a miracle. 

So Alice prayed, meditated, talked with God, begged God to heal him.  She explained to God, that although Uncas was not a Christian Englishman, he was still created in God’s image.  Hadn’t God said that he loved his entire creation?  And Uncas had saved her.  She remembered the fire in his eyes as he fought for her, climbing the mountain, nearly falling to his death.  Had Nathaniel not reached them in time, he would have died trying to save her.

That’s a great question Anon!

I think he saw a strength in Alice that no one else did. He saw how she was treated only as a little sister and not as a woman, and I believe in their few interactions he attempted to treat her as one.  I think he recognized that she needed help but also that there was more to her than anyone else believed. I’m a firm believer that Uncas saw Alice as someone who could save herself if only supported. 

They are definitely one of my favorite pairings and I would love to know what you think!

His first interaction with her was the ambush scene- he saw her with her face desperately embedded in Cora's lap. So his very first impression of her is perhaps a fearful child, or the traditional image of weak female (though Uncas strikes me as having the kind of character that would not judge so critically so quickly). But then, as he moves to release the horses, in a bold move she charges him and voices her disbelief and displeasure at what he is doing. Stopping her forces him to take note of her and really see her in that moment. I think the first thing he notices is her boldness in that moment. But simultaneously he takes note of her physically- as a woman and also her appearance. I think her blond hair and fair skin attract him because she is so different to what he knows. He obviously knows Alexandra Cameron, do he's seen other light-haired, fair-skinned women, but I think the over-all effect initially grabs his notice.

Over the course of the next few days he has all the time in the world to observe her as he follows behind her. We only see a couple of instances, such as the awesome waterfall scene where we see him watching her and he is clearly affected by her. But you can tell a lot about a person by observing them in crises. I think in those quiet stolen moments of observation he saw a quiet strength just below the surface that could flourish if given the chance to move out of her sister's fiercely protective shadow.

We are given no dialogue in the movie, but I believe that's just because scenes were cut. I think they definitely spoke and interacted with each other along the way to the fort. Most fanfics portray them as quiet and shy- and I do believe they are introverts by nature. However, we see an easy, pleasant disposition in both Alice and Uncas at the beginning of the film. Alice when greeting Duncan and Cora in the field having tea and Uncas with the Camerons at their cabin. I don't believe they were socially awkward or overtly shy (Alice is probably more so than Uncas because he is male and an Indian). So, though not overly talkative or gregarious, I think they would have talked, maybe more so if not under the stress of the dangerous situation they found themselves in.

Over the course of the journey to the fort, whatever interaction they had at the fort (and I firmly believe they did have interaction there) and then the bonding through the rescue from the massacre leaving the fort, Uncas became deeply connected to Alice and fell completely in love with her. Knowing a match between them would be considered taboo and forbidden at the time probably only strengthened that feeling. To me, it is clear in the film that he is besotted while Alice is more ambiguous until she jumps after him.

Their story mystifies me because I can see what a strong effect they have on people, including myself. Despite such a small amount of screen time or any real focus given to their development, their hold on the audience is total and electric. The fact that they elicit such a strong response - far exceeding Cora and Hawkeye- is amazing and fascinating to me. There is something special in these two characters. I, for one, attribute that completely to the depth of talent of Eric Schweig and Jodhi May. Michael Mann missed a golden opportunity with those two. Though maybe if they had been given more we wouldn't be so captivated and mesmerized by them.

So something is bothering me a little bit and I’m hoping someone can help me out.

I recently watched “The Last of the Mohicans” again after several years. I saw it in the theaters in 1992 when it came out.

I was showing it to my son and there is a part in there that doesn’t make sense for him. When Uncas is killed and thrown over the cliff (sob!), Hawkeye is coming out of the rocks just a hair too late and shouts, “Nicholas!” I feel like I remember at some point there being explanation in the movie that both boys were given “Christian” names in addition to their given names- Hawkeye’s of course being Nathaniel and Uncas’ Nicholas.

I’m almost embarrassed to admit how many times I’ve watched the movie in the last month, but there is no mention of this anywhere in the movie. Uncas is only referred to as Nicholas that one time by Hawkeye.

Am I going crazy? Was this just another of the myriad of things cut out for director’s cut? Is there something on the theatrical release that we don’t have now?

Like I said, for someone who didn’t see the theatrical version this would make no sense.

So I’m concerned that people don’t realize just how messed up the situation at Standing Rock really is. The United States signed treaties acknowledging and agreeing that there are certain areas of land that were never ceded to them. These areas do not belong to the United States. They belong to a sovereign nation governed by indigenous people. The land that the Dakota Access Pipeline runs through is not part of the US. It is part of the Lakota nation. That means it is essentially a separate country.

Please imagine if the US wanted to build a pipeline from Washington to Alaska and they went through part of Canada to get there. Canadians protested, saying they have no right to be there and they’re destroying their water, and in response the USA sent militarized police to attack, harass, and harass these protesters, then arrested them for trespassing… on their own land.

That is what’s happening. This is an invasion, and the police are interfering on behalf of a foreign oil company.

I saw someone suggest on here somewhere that Uncas put this braid in Alice’s hair. So naturally I watched the movie again today and paid very close attention and I am now 100% certain the audience was robbed of this scene and that it occurred in the missing waterfall scene. As they enter the cave her hair is not braided- it’s still not braided when Uncas pulls her to him when she gets too close to the falls. But it’s there when Magua discovers her and Cora in the cave and takes them captive. I *need* to see Uncas braiding Alice's hair!!!
