[gothamfc]: Gotham FC defender Emily Sonnett underwent surgery to repair the ruptured patellar tendon in her left knee and will miss the remainder of the 2026 NWSL season, the club confirmed Friday.
Sonnett suffered the injury at Providence Park early in the first half of this past Friday’s 2-2 draw at Portland Thorns.
“Emily has the full support of everyone at the club, and we will be with her every step of the way throughout her recovery,” said Yael Averbuch West, the president of soccer operations for Gotham FC. “She is incredibly resilient, and we know she will return stronger.”

“You’ll never guess what I got to do today,” Sam says in a sing-song voice as Emily meets her in the hotel lobby for dinner after the Challenge Cup win.
“What?” Emily asks after pecking her girlfriend’s lips.
“No, you have to guess.”
“But you said I’d never… fine, did you ride an elephant?” Emily asks, grudgingly playing along for Sam.
“I would never, look at this,” Sam brandishes her phone.
At first, when Emily looks, it’s just Sam holding up a random jersey that she signed for a fan at her little meet and greet thing, but upon further inspection, Emily recognizes the shirt, she actually saw it already today— and signed it.
“That’s not… did you sign my jersey?”
“Sure did, baby,” Sam grins maniacly, “told them this is now a one of one and I wanted a pic of it.”
“Why? You’ve seen my jerseys plenty of times,” Emily is confused, “you even tried to sleep in one that one time.”
“Yeah, but now it’s my name next to yours,” Sam puts her phone in her pocket and loops her arms around Emily’s neck, “and I kinda like that.”
“Oh you do?” Emily smiles back at her, resting her hands on Sam’s hips and speaks softly with their faces so close together. “Maybe I kinda like it too.”
Emily has never been one to think too far into the future, there’s so much about her profession that makes it hard to do, but she does like the idea of her and Sam’s name intertwined beyond just today. She doesn’t say that though, she wouldn’t know how to articulate it anyway, but she does whisper something against Sam’s lips before kissing her.
“Do you think that fan would let me buy it off them? Might be valuable one day.”

“Oh baby,” Kelley sighs without trying to laugh, “you’re so red.”
They spent basically the entire day at the beach, soaking in the last days of Emily’s break before the season starts up again. The Cayman Islands has been their favorite destination for years, the clear blue water and nearly-white sand beaches are the perfect romantic backdrop.
However, now that they’re getting ready for bed, Kelley can see the impact of Emily not reapplying her sunscreen, too busy exploring and looking adorable with her snorkel. Her shoulders are bright red, the lines of her bathing suit sharp under the lights of the bathroom.
“Don’t say ‘I told you so’,” Emily rolls her eyes.
“Me? I would never,” Kelley grins, pressing the lightest possible kiss to the back of Emily’s neck, but she still winces. “Here, let me,” she takes the bottle of aloe out of Emily’s hands after watching her struggle to soothe the burn on her back and shoulders. “Take this off,” Kelley tugs on the hem of Emily’s tank.
“You’re seriously trying to get me naked right now?”
“I always want you naked,” Kelley laughs.
Kelley gently applies the lotion, her hands moving across the planes of Emily’s back. She watches the muscles tense and relax as Kelley touches her broad shoulders, which definitely does make Kelley happy that there’s no fabric in the way. Emily groans when Kelley gets to her lower back, and yeah, maybe that does turn Kelley on, but she tries to stifle it.
“You need to be more careful,” Kelley says, “your freckles don’t protect this pale skin that well.”
“That sounds an awful lot like an ‘I told you so’, Miss Kelley,” Emily turns around in Kelley’s arms and Kelley is momentarily distracted by her girlfriend’s bare chest.
“Shut up,” Kelley says, kissing Emily, tucking a finger into the blonde’s sleep shorts and pulling her to the bed.
“Thank you for this,” Sam leans her head on Emily’s shoulder as the flight attendants go over the safety instructions that both of them can repeat in their sleep at this point.
“For what?” Emily asks in the middle of a yawn.
“Bringing me here,” Sam says, looking out the window at the Brazilian landscape, thinking about the week they’ve had.
Rather than Emily coming back from camp and then jumping on another plane to see Sam or sleeping on her couch for a week, they made the decision to extend Emily’s time in Brazil, with Sam joining after their last game. Sam was there to watch the game, or whatever it became in the second half, and couldn’t stop laughing at the replays of the “foul” on Emily.
After being released from camp, the two met up at a hotel on the beach for an all-inclusive vacation. Five star resort, private beach and private dinners, Emily spared no expense, she never does when it comes to Sam, and Sam rewarded her by wearing the skimpiest bikinis known to man all week long.
“You can thank me by staying a little longer,” Emily says sleepily, her eyes drooping already. She hasn’t been home in a month and she was doing so much rehab before, it’s no wonder she’s exhausted.
“As if you’re getting rid of me that easily,” Sam grins, turning to look at Emily, “I’m not leaving you until the last possible second,” she kisses Emily’s cheek. “Get some sleep, baby, I’ll wake you when the cookies come around.”
“I think that might be the sexiest thing you’ve ever said to me,” Emily smiles and Sam kisses her again, curling into her girlfriend’s side as the plane takes off.
