caleb and essek could both credibly be described as 'into older men' but for essek it's more of a conventional 'grey hair and professor energy' thing and for caleb it's like 'when I make a self-deprecating comment about getting old I want my otherwise youthful-seeming partner to fix me with a haunting stare in which I can see a hundred years of history pre-dating my birth and call me "boy" in the most patronising tone possible' and they're both so valid for that

the schaffa-nassun interactions in the obelisk gate are so
nassun hates her mother because her mother was cruel to her. why was essun cruel to her? because schaffa abused her from childhood and destroyed her family, leading her to pass that trauma down to her daughter in an attempt to keep her safe. and who's holding nassun's hands telling her it's wrong for her to be abused? SCHAFFA. even though he's reformed, even though he's different, its like!!!! bitch its your fault we're even in this situation!!!! AUGGGUFHFHGH the character relationships in this book drive me bonkers
It's not "incorrect" to treat tabletop RPG character creation as guided OC creation tool – heck, it's not even novel; the first published tabletop RPG to explicitly frame character creation as a standalone solo minigame came out in like 1977 – but you do need to recognise that each character creation system is tuned to produce a very particular Type of Guy. Yes, even the ostensibly "generic" ones. This isn't a flaw – obviously you want character creation for a game to strongly push people toward creating characters who are both willing and able to participate in the things that game is about – but it's something to be aware of when using tabletop RPGs in this way. If you're trying to use Dungeons & Dragons as a creative framework for a character who would never under any circumstances voluntarily go into a dungeon to fight a dragon, you're gonna have a rough time!
how it genuinely feels to have someone who agrees with your somewhat niche stances on a character
will the owner of the goalpost out in the bailey please move it down the slippery slope towards the middle ground where a strawman is currently begging the question. we have a bandwagon waiting to help you, unless youre too much of an uneducated dipshit to handle any of that, in which case we can circle back to a true scotsman who will be able to appeal to our authority.
of course i love seeing people pushing back on the stereotype of ancient rome as this noble and glorious marble white cradle of civilization but very often it just goes too far into this equally wrong way of thinking when people start to paint ancient rome as this uniquely evil culture that's not only uniquely evil by itself but also is like a progenitor of Everything Wrong with modern society. people literally think if it wasn't for ancient rome we would have no patriarchy or slavery or colonialism. which is like. Okay so you don't know anything about any ancient culture whatsoever
