My reaction to the new Tumblr porn rules:

Ahem…

GET THE FUCK OVER IT, Y’ALL.

Tumblr is populated with under-aged people and Yahoo doesn’t want to get sued because some 14-year-old is whacking it to the #threesome tag and his mom walks in. It’s also populated with people at work who don’t want to innocently looking through the #Gaming tag and find gaming porn.

Sorry for your loss. Except I’m not. At all.

It’s not something we’re just gonna get the fuck over. This literally means that hundreds of thousands of blogs are being effectively shut down by Yahoo. They will have difficulty finding any new followers because people won’t be able to find their posts unless they were already following in the first place.

I mean, not all of these blogs are even straight up porn blogs… They could easily include:

Personal blogs that post some pornography/NSFW content

Blogs where the user takes nudes and other risque photos

Even for straight up porn blogs, they are still operated by real people with feelings who have spent hours and a lot of emotions on their blogs

The thing is, Tumblr has been the way it is for a while, and the way it is allows for an intense expression of creativity. The fact that Yahoo is trying to dismantle this freedom, which is one of the main things we appreciate about Tumblr, is very stressful and upsetting. Nobody is just gonna “get the fuck over it" because it really isn’t that simple.

It absolutely IS that simple. Porn and nudity are not acceptable to have in places easily accessed by under-aged users. Even Google doesn't just straight up put NSFW content in their searches. You have to turn that shit on.

Sure there's some growing pains as they figure out how to separate the #gayporn from the #gay tag (I guarantee the latter won't stay empty long) but to throw a fit over the company taking the same stance as every other social media outlet about what constitutes NSFW because "ZOMG HOW WILL I GET NEW FOLLOWERS" is childish at best and naive about business practices at worst.

No one is taking away your freedom of expression. Post all the porn in the world (I know I still will!) but it's only mindbogglingly these restrictions hadn't been put in place ALREADY by Tumblr staff.
