The german VA of the TOA audiobooks, speaks Commodus with the voice of a rich, hot dark romance novel business man in his 30s, but with the affect of a social media addicted, popular highschool mean girl, that is constantly abhorrently annoyed and bothered by absolutely everyone and everything.
@lunii12 Look I know it's been a while since you asked
But I cut some audio clips from the copy of the german audiobook of The Dark Prophecy (Die Dunkle Prophezeiung) free use free use free use!!
Enjoy german Commodus
“Actually,” said the emperor, sending a flash freeze through the room, “I’m a god. And I have no idea.” - TDP Chpt. 11
"But elephants are so stubborn! They’re big and strong and used to getting their way—rather like gods. Still”—he winked at me—“it’s amazing what a little punishment can accomplish.” - TDP Chpt. 26
Commodus hissed. “I recognize the betrayer who strangled me in my bath. I recognize the so-called god who promised me blessings and then deserted me!” - TDP Chpt. 39
Also him saying "Boooring" like an annoyed highschooler (Chpt. 11 TDP)
That's him. That's the guy. He is Commodus. And also Apollo and everyone else. I love him <3

Not sorry. Be grateful I didn't make it FMK
Considering their ToA versions only and not the historic figures.
I love the idea of jason being like. completely different when he’s interacting with mortals. commanding a whole army? done in his sleep. arguing in the senate? he can do that all day. fighting the most vile monsters you can think of? easy.
talking to a mortal cashier in the mortal world at a mortal store? he’s shaking in his boots. he’s talking in the softest voice ever and not making any eye contact. not even looking at their face. the rest of the seven are shocked by this and tease him lightly
bro get OUT of there 😭😭😭🙏 can never catch a break smh
Tbh I can't even be mad at people in MTP not realizing William James Moriarty is still around just in a black wig, because no one seems to have once questioned that out of Albert, William and Louis, the one with no blood relation to the other two is Louis and not the one who isn't nearly identical to William.
Are gods in the riordanverse treating humans with respect and not sacrificing their life and wellbeing for their ends the equivalent to humans being vegan?
Sure most of them don't generally eat humans but I feel like the mentality of trying to reduce suffering and exploitation as best as possible is similar.
Are there some more obscure activist deities campaigning against Zeus kidnapping people all the time? Or gods meddling in human wars? Is there infighting about how to best safe humans? Whether it's the gods' duty to stop people from killing each other, or whether that is part of their natural ecosystem and gods should not interfere?
Iris and Rhea seem like they would have a part in this. Thor from Magnus Chase might have a podcast dunking on vegan gods.
God vegamism in PJO??
Need answers on that Rick Riordan. I'll be waiting for the official statement.
SEE THIS IS INTERESTING because we know from the story of Pelops that the gods (Greek, at least) find the idea of literally cannibalizing humans to be horrific and do seem to consider it cannibalism. But I do think you hit the nail on the head with cannibalism more often than not in Greek mythology reading like a metaphor for power: Tantalus tries to feed Pelops to the gods because he feels looked down upon and wants to "test" their divinity; Chronus cannibalizes his children in an attempt to cling onto power (same with Zeus and Metis); Atreus tricks Thyestes into eating his own sons as revenge for Thyestes' attempt to steal the throne. So on so forth. They loved their cannibalism motif.
In Percy Jackson's Greek Heroes, Percy actually does say "Gods are like that. They get esaily bored with their mortal loves. To them, humans are like classroom gerbils." (237-238). I cut the quote off here for brevity, but he goes on to explain that gods get bored of their favored mortals quickly.
So I would say that gods view humans less like chattel animals to be consumed, and more like fish/rodents/other pets that are commonly given to children and promptly neglected. As such, animal rights' activists might be a more fitting title.
The most important thing about this post however, imo, is remembering that the events of ToA likely turned Apollo into one of these gods protesting the treatment of mortals. And so, from Zeus's PoV, he grounded his son to the mortal world only for him to come back... gasp, shock, horror.... Vegan /silly /lh
Some centuries Apollo spent distracted by Hephaestus' trinkets, others he spent teaching an octopus the piano, no doubt.
Hot take
but Commodus was never attracted to Apollo as Lester. Yes, he calls him "dear heart" and makes those two strange and loaded remarks at him and that's totally bizarre and inappropriate, get it together man. But he also calls him fat and ugly and seems downright insulted he only gets to take revenge on some random mortal that is nothing like the god he wanted to bring down.
I just think he's dumb as heck and genuinely fails to separate the two in his head.
It's Apollo his millenia old ex he wants revenge on and it's a gross, weird, puny teen that's not even worth his time and he gets to make charged innuendos as a power play all he wants, because that's how you roll with your immortal nemesis and Lester isn't real and it's eating him alive.
If someone pointed out that, no matter how you turn it, he made those statements to a 16yo and called him a predator for it, he would not get the concept of that for dear life.
He's a strange and twisted man and they have a strange and twisted relationship. He's not into minors though and the Riordan-team bent over backwards to make that clear.
From this Read Riordan article. The way they phrased this is sending me.
lambmedes
me when im an unreliable narrator and my perceptions of myself and the world around me are twisted, so readers are forced to rely on a mix of other characters' reactions to/statements on the world around us, what's actually happening in the scenes i describe, and the way facts about the world seem to contradict the conclusions i draw from them, in order to properly understand what is happening in the novel
fuckkkk my sacrificial lamb has started hanging out with the scapegoat
