The mass response to the film, “Me Before You”, and the response to the disabled community’s objections has been so troubling, and so telling of where our society is when it comes to the topic of ableism. 

When people do not see the problem with saying “I would rather be dead than disabled too”, where is the line? Would it be okay to say “I would rather be dead than a woman”, “I would rather be dead than gay”, “I would rather be dead than black”? None of these are things that we choose, but disability can happen to ANYONE at any time, and the non-disabled are SO scared, they seriously think it would be the end of their life. For them, disability makes suicide understandable, and they cannot comprehend how it feels to be disabled, and for the masses to say, “I couldn’t go on living if I were you”.

You’re not seeing the whole picture, you’re not seeing our real stories, all you’ve ever seen represented is the “I’m disabled and I’m miserable because I’m disabled” narrative, but there is so much more to our stories, so be an ally and LISTEN.

Disability and Fashion -

Developing my own personal style has always been pretty important to me. It’s not so much that I get enjoyment out of being on trend but more so that I thrive off of the theatrics of getting dressed up and the buzz of creating a look.

I can remember experimenting with clothes when I was young and feeling as though they were the perfect way to express the different parts of my personality and to show people exactly what was going on in my head on that particular day. My family also encouraged me pick my own outfits from an early age and of course this lead to some questionable decisions on my part but I feel as though this was one of my first creative outlets.

It was through creating these different looks that I discovered that you can’t control how people perceive you but you can influence it by the way you present yourself to them. You see, as a person living with Cerebral Palsy, disability is a big part of my identity. Its had a considerable impact on the way that I see the world and the experiences I’ve had because of it have played a huge part in shaping the person that I am today. So my disability is not something that I’ve ever wanted to cover up or hide, in fact it’s something I’m very comfortable highlighting in what I wear day to day.

I often match my mobility devices with my clothes or place them prominently in my pictures on social media and I think this is something that still surprises a lot of people. I believe that a lot of people still hold so many misconceptions about disability, that the idea that a people with disabilities can be just stylish as anyone else is still very new to them and there for the idea that disability can in fact contribute to developing  style is a completely abstract concept. This is evident to me as a part time wheelchair user as I get way more compliments on my look when I’m in my chair and my disability is more visible, as apposed to when I’m walking.

However when they see me, embracing who I am and appearing as though I want to stand out from the crowd. It’s as though you can see the misconceptions just floating away. They realise they don’t have to feel sorry for me and that my disability doesn’t take away from my individuality.

For me it just makes sense that if I am going to stand out regardless of the way I dress, I may as well do it with style. With fashion I feel as though you can embrace a body that is not seen as normal and show it off as something cool and interesting. For me, I see fashion as a weapon to change perceptions. Armed with only with the clothes that I am wearing, I am able to tackle head on the notion that the disabled body is inherently negative and instead show people it can be something beautiful.
