Okay but imagine Yuta and Taeyong and their son Winwin
yuta and taeyong arguing about what language winwin’s first word should be.
taeyong can never resist winwin’s cuteness and caves in all the time. he spoils him by buying him ice cream and essentially whatever he wants. it’s up to yuta to keep the family from going bankrupt.
soccer dad! yuta, but instead of soccer it’s dancing because he is a supportive parent that cares about his child’s interests. every recital he cheers embarrassingly loud, and he always questions the judges at competitions.
winwin has no idea how to cook, because obviously, he is a child. however, it’s quite different for yuta, who still relies on taeyong’s instructions and youtube videos with cheesy background music. taeyong is not sure if he has one or two children when they cook together. but he finds it absolutely adorable how he has to command yuta to stir all the ingredients together, who then orders winwin to get all the ingredients. the boy complies happily, pleased to be helping, and the two mix the batter together. (taeyong is so busy watching them that he forgets the timer and burns the cookies, but oh well, they can always go out for ice cream)
on his first day of school, they expect winwin to be terrified and start crying when they try to leave. however, the six-year-old is as bright as ever waves goodbye enthusiastically, excited to make new friends. yutae end up being the ones crying because “our son is growing up”
celebrating korean, japanese, and chinese holidays with the help of their chinese friends. that’s right, winwin will get his red envelope, kashiwa-mochi, and seaweed soup.
winwin is both a spoiled and smart child, he knows the effect he has on taeyong - which he may or may not use to his advantage. yuta is quite aware of this, but no matter how many times he scolds taeyong for letting him off easy, winwin is simply the apple of his eye.
yuta is both worried and angry when he is called to the school because winwin got in a fight. “they made fun of me for having two dads,” the third grader sniffles, “and not having a mom. and they said mean things about you and papa. so i hit one, but then he brought his friends.” he apologizes to the staff and other parents, but secretly high-fives winwin as he treats his wounds at home.
winwin’s friends find his fiery eyebrowed dad intimidating and scary, but when they finally go over to his house he turns out to be awkward and warm-hearted.
yuta is the ‘cool dad’ who, contrary to taeyong, attracts all the kids. they all think he’s the best dad ever, seeing as he seems easygoing and friendly. he even plays soccer with the kids sometimes, much to their delight. this leaves socially awkard taeyong sulking.
winwin brings his first boyfriend home in high school and yutae decide to do the entire ‘touch my son and you will die’ act to mess with him and play around being the immature idiots they are. in reality they are accepting and welcome him to the family.
which brings the two to their next dilemma - the Talk. now, although they are both usually very comfortable with the topic (yuta to the point of making their friends groan) it is quite different with their son. which results in a very awkward conversation on their part, while winwin is amused. after they manage to excruciatingly finish, he simply thanks them but informs them he’s learned all of it in school already.
insisting that it only happens once, newborn suburban white mom’s yutae try to get winwin to buy an expensive suit for prom, much to his chagrin. although they promised they wouldn’t, they take 10388235 photos before sending them off. reminiscing over dances they themselves attended themselves, they end up swaying to violin music later when they’re gone.
seeing their son hopelessly in love and with stars in his eyes reminds grumpy old men yutae of their honeymoon stage as a couple and leads to a round of nostalgia and rare but heartfelt tender displays of love.
however this changes soon. along with all this relationship stuff that comes in high school comes the inevitable but dreaded part - heartbreak. it breaks any parents heart to hear their child’s sobs, and this is the first time winwin has cried in years. suspiciously enough, a bucket of water balloons falls out of a certain locker the next day at school.
when winwin runs away from home, yutae begin to doubt themselves as parents and wonder if they are really capable of raising a child. it’s a big responsibility, and the weight of it breaks them down. he returns the next day, teary and apologetic, but instead of the reprimanding he was expecting when he knocked on the door, all he gets is a giant hug.
the return of soccer dad! yuta at graduation, who cheers louder than everyone else attending. though they deny it, they both teared up as winwin received his diploma.
sending winwin to university brings a fresh round of tears and an inevitable goodbye, though he promises to call every week and visit often. they’re both reluctant about a university so far away, but winwin assures them it’ll only be a few years.
graduation: the sequel four years later, with even more teary-eyed yutae snapping pictures of winwin even when he’s sitting in his seat doing nothing.
helping winwin fix his tie and collar before his first job interview, and then again two weeks later - not for an interview this time.
finally, the day every parent both dreads and anticipates the most. the day their child gets married. the preparations take four months, with yutae arguing over every detail. the day of is as frantic as ever, with problems sprouting up here and there. however, everything vanishes into a peaceful contentedness as they see their son smiling at the love of his life, moments before the big kiss. it’s a jovial and celebratory night from then on. (though they held it in during prom and graduation, the waterworks are unstoppable this time).he clasps the shoulder of his new in-law, “take good care of him for me. oh,” he smiles warmly,“and welcome to the family.” sending their son off, with a bittersweet yet happy smile on their faces, they bid the couple good night as they drive off after the wedding. afterwards they look through the photos of their own years before, bringing on a fresh set of tears. taeil would never let them call him crybaby again if he saw this.
the big news coming in - through a telephone call of all things. holding their first grandchild in their arms. small and fragile and peaceful. taeyong almost cries again. there’s the nursery that yuta painted himself, and the set of stuffed animals they bought, along with the baby mobile they themselves had trouble figuring out how to turn on decades ago.
watching the child grow up - going to their first day of school, their first kiss, graduating university - all things they have seen before, but now it is winwin walking his own child through it.
years later, yuta and taeyong snuggled up on the couch under piles of blankets on a cold day. they flip through the photo-album that contains all their memories with winwin. they reminisce over their past memories - from the very beginning when they argued over the language winwin would speak, to crying when they sent him off to school, his first kiss and heartbreak, holding in their tears during prom and graduation, to finally crying again when they sent him off to his new family. though winwin is gone, their memories and love still remain.
and years after that, when winwin himself flips through the same photo album, feeling a fresh wave of nostalgia wash over him. from making cookies together as a child, to punching a kid for insulting them, to getting ice cream whenever he wanted, hour long phone calls from a university miles away, holding in tears at his wedding and baby shower, to finally crying again when he sent them off. though his parents were gone, their memories and love still remained.
