phoenix wright is like. he often gets overlooked in the games because well 1. he’s the main character in a huge cast of Bizarre Quirky characters and he’s usually seen as the straight man even though he is insane in his own way. But my point was 2. that main characters often get ignored in fandom in favor of the Cooler Side Characters like miles edgeworth because he has emo backstory. and look yeah the fans like to talk about phoenix’s crazy emo backstory too like how he was manipulated and ate glass. but like. look. look. (he is not making any sense) LOOK what i’m trying to get is that it’s SUCH a good use of the ‘main character gets overlooked’ phenomenon. because phoenix does the job HIMSELF of making himself less remarkable and noticeable. he wants to be normal. he needs to be normal. he never shares anything and he never opens up and he always thinks nobody should give a shit about him. so like. at first you might not even notice he’s Doing All That bc he’s the main character and you’re much more focused on how franziska has 92273837 untreated mental illnesses. but once you really look into his character you will see that there is also something deeply wrong with him. something is wrong with him and it is buried so so deep and i’m just saying i think if any of the characters ever got the magatama and asked phoenix anything about his life he would have 20 black psyche locks

and if I say aa2 is my favorite out of the phoenix wright trilogy. it has franziska von karma. it has phoenix smoking 5 packs a day going through his worst seasonal affective disorder yet. it’s got edgeworth coming back from the dead/doing his one year of guided meditation in europe like I am no longer mentally ill wright why are you looking at me like I killed your parrot we can do court chess again now. pull yourself together. it has possibly top 3 of gumshoe’s most insane and epic moments. it has yet again phoenix getting bullied in court by like three women simultaneously. introduces perfect baby angel pearl fey. fire extinguisher induced amnesia tutorial. franziska von karma is there I can’t stress this enough.

Do you have any tips on getting better at writing? I’m always amazed on how real your stories feel, both in atmosphere setting and realism (within reason) and also in how you write feelings in a way that feels like getting punched in the gut lmao

This is the best advice anybody can give you, but it's not fun and it's shitty to execute: the only way to get better at writing is to write a lot.

I'm not going to say that there aren't people who have a better intuitive capability at writing than others, but no matter how much innate talent someone may have, nothing will ever take the place of the journeyman grind of writing hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of pages. From the first story I ever wrote to the last one I churned out, the difference is immense -- and while yes, I've grown in experience, vocabulary, literary reference and maturity, the only way I was able to deploy those new tools and refinements was by continuously throwing myself bloody against the brick wall of writing yet another story.

The best way to be a good writer is to be a bad writer for a very long time, in essence, and to be able to grit your teeth through that process. That last part, the endurance sport of it, that's the thing a lot of people can't do; even once you're a quote-unquote good writer, writing doesn't get much easier, because you hold yourself to a higher standard, and chipping blood out of the rock of your frontal lobe so your story can have a climax is the same agonizing process it's ever been -- regardless of how you avoid thesaurus abuse these days.

Re: the realism and atmosphere, I wrote a long thread about my process there years ago (thanks @cherrysolitary for the off twitter link!) which now I'm thinking I should probably transcribe into Tumblr at some point.
