Synopsis:
Lira is a siren princess, heir to an underwater kingdom and daughter of the Sea Queen. To please her mother and prove her place of royalty, Lira hunts and steals the heart of a prince every year. Prince Elian will one day be the king of the great kingdom of Midas. Instead of spending his time learning to rule, however, he would rather be captaining his crew of pirates intent on ridding the sea of sirens.
The princess and prince’s paths cross when Lira finds herself turned into a human, a punishment dealt out by her mother. In order to earn her old life back, she must kill the Midasan prince and prove herself worthy to be the Sea Queen’s heir. But the hunt for the second eye of Keto, a stone with the power to turn the tide of the war between land and sea, might just be enough to bring the two together. The only question is whether they can manage to obtain it before they kill each other first.
The summary of this book drew me in, and I knew I had to read it. A siren that only kills princes and a prince who only hunts sirens? Sounds like a match made in heaven to me! I love a good star-crossed lovers story, and To Kill a Kingdom didn’t disappoint.
Right out of the gate, I knew I was going to enjoy this story. The first line of the book might be my favorite first line of any book I’ve read so far. I don’t always like to read novels split between multiple characters’ points of view, but in the case of Lira and Elian’s story it really was necessary. The story was that much better being told from both of their perspectives.
Neither Lira nor Elian can seem to be the person their parents want them to be. Lira’s mom wants her to be fiercer and less caring for her cousin, while Elian’s father wants him to give up the ocean and fulfill his duty of being a prince, and eventually king. Both of them struggle to fill the roles their parents set before them, all the while trying to hold onto a shred of who they truly are.
I enjoyed watching each of the characters develop into the person they were meant to be. I found myself holding my breath at certain parts of the story, worried they would make the wrong decisions. While the end of the novel could easily be predicted, there were so many twists and turns throughout the story I didn’t expect that I wasn’t upset at all when the end turned out to be exactly what I had hoped for.
The novel was well written, with the descriptions of settings and objects borderlining poetry. While I liked the vivid imagery, at times I could feel myself skipping over some of the fluffy details to get back to the action of the story. This is the only reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5.
The dialogue, on the other hand, I thought was perfect. The characters kept up an entertaining banter that reminded me of my own friends. Here’s one of my favorite lines: “You can’t just kill everyone you don’t like.” “I know that. Otherwise you’d be dead already.”
Overall I think Christo told a beautiful story of two people who, despite all the odds, end up falling in love. If you’re looking for your next young adult fantasy romance, I suggest you give it a try!
