Somewhere in 2019 it began to tickle my brain: what if I got chickens?
It was very much a daydream at the time. I was doing minimum wage jobs with few hours and already had two cats on a medical diet. I also couldn't really pinpoint why chickens. I liked seeing them, and they are little dinosaurs, but I'd never had birds before. That said, my mother did raise me to always research a pet before you take it, so I set the idea on the back burner but did decide to dig a little bit into poultry keeping. What breeds of chicken were there anyway? What did they need? Could I put a coop in my backyard?
Christmas that year saw the first chicken, a little cat toy from my mum. As the idea refused to leave my brain she also got me a chicken bag, and told me about The Softest Chicken Toy.
Fast forward a couple of months and despite the while world seemingly going to pot all at once I managed to land a full-time job. I was suddenly saving money.
I could... have chickens?
Discussed it with parents, asked the neighbors for permission, finally went and bought The Softest Chicken Toy (meet Hubert!) and am now in the middle of constructing a chicken coop with my stepfather. So here we are!
