When browsing Pinterest, I keep seeing posts where Jesus is standing with gods from other cultures (Brahma, Zeus, etc.) claiming that “they’re all friends".

I don’t meant to offend anyone who makes or likes these posts, but that’s is entirely incorrect.

For anyone who reads the Bible, God makes it very clear that He hates idolatry. While He does hate every other sin as well, idolatry is the only one that He compares to adultery (Hosea 1:2 & 3:1, Jeremiah 3:8-9, Isaiah 57:7-8). This means that worship for God is not only something personal, but it’s the avenue through which we experience the deepest form of intimacy with our Creator.

God is the lover of our souls, and He has always remained faithful to us even when we’ve abandoned Him for false gods who will not satisfy us. If God views idolatry the same way you would view your spouse cheating on you, then it’s wise to take it serious.

This teaching is also false because we were never intended to be satisfied other than in God. The Bible consistently teaches that the world will not satisfy us, and choosing the world over God will lead to death, both spiritually and physically (see Matthew 16:26).

We obviously see this with things like drug addiction, gambling, constant partying, lust, etc. but the enemy is way more subtle than that. He can work through things that have become normalized in our society, and thus, go undetected; constant shopping, doom scrolling, over eating, etc. Why would gods created by humanity fill what’s supposed be filled with the divine?

Lastly, this teaching honestly just doesn’t make any sense.

To say that Jesus is friends with other gods is to say that either all of them exist (a teaching God is very against) or that none of them do (which isn’t much better).

This teaching implies that no god is real, and that everyone who prays to them, Christians included, are wasting their time. It’s saying what really matters is how you improve as a person here and now, foregoing the essential Christian teaching how you live your life here will drastically affect your time in eternity. It’s saying to only think about the here and now, which is exactly the type of thinking many of the other sins listed above promote.

God is not friends with what takes His children away from Him. Jesus will not tolerate those who receive the love and devotion that was meant for Him. The Holy Spirit will not fill and guide those who are determined to follow the ways of the world, this teaching included.

Jesus is the only true God, and He will share His place with any other.
