I couldn't help myself. 😏 I imagine adult Zuko is better at communicating...sort of.
you know what im 90% sure its not actually the case but it does look like shes grabbing his thigh here and im just gonna go with that
No matter how many jabs Br*ke throws at Zutara, it will never dissuade us.
Zuko and Katara don't say a word to each other - They’re having an emotional affair
Zuko's lighting scar from saving Katara is gone - Katara healed it through multiple sessions and possibly bloodbending
A spirit calls them a couple - They’re soulmates
Katara and Zuko both turn old in the spirit realm - Their souls are on the same maturity level
Kind of actually wild to me that they finally voiced the issue of Katara being forced into a maternal role because of her mother’s death in season 3 and then had her open up to only one other character about the severity of how traumatic that event had been for her and it was in the episode where she was allowed to step out of that maternal role and try to reclaim apart of her childhood, facilitated by that same character. AND THEN! That character sacrificed himself for her in an extremely similar fashion to how her mother had, the woman whose role she had to bear, symbolizing him taking that burden from her and effectively putting her back in a position of being cared for instead being the caretaker while also granting her the opportunity to realize that if she had the power to save her mother she could’ve and would’ve through saving him.
oh okay
blue and red
Like honestly, Aang deserved better too.
Kataang was not a good match unless you want that caretaker/mothering role perpetuated. His growth was stunted because he was paired with an enabler.
Why do I call her en enabler? Well she chose him for a number of reasons. She had stars in her eyes from the beginning with him being the Avatar and was led towards him by his continuous and non consensual, juvenile advances, the predictions of a false oracle, and the social pressure of her position in his life. His anger at the EIP’s portrayal of their relationship showed how he could potentially act if she didn’t react well to him, and throughout the series (and comics 🤮) she acts as the pacifist, the only person who can break through to Aang when he’s freaking out. Some Avatar. He relies too much on her to take care of him (physically and emotionally), and she takes that burden readily. If he was given any chance to deal with that crap on his own, maybe we would have seen some growth in his character.
Katara deserved someone she didn’t have to take care of, and Aang deserved someone who could give him a kick in the right direction and facilitate his growth into the Avatar he could have been.
i know this is like beating a dead horse but kataang was not the best choice for either character and their respective growth.
do i hate the ship… no, not entirely.
do i think that the ship reinforces overused stereotypes in media, yes.
why does the hero always have to get the main girl? in all honesty i would have much rather the show ended off ambiguous with each character having their respective growth AWAY from the other and then meeting again and getting together. it would have been so much more meaningful.
also realistically the idea that katara and aang met each at the ages of 12 and 14 and managed to live together happily ever after is a very unrealistic portrayal. i hope this new movie shows some bumps in the relationship because if it doesn’t then they’re only reinforcing an idealized version of love, which i can’t say doesn’t entirely exist, but it’s very rare. also quite frankly it’s boring to watch as a viewer.
as a disclaimer, this rant is not meant to be inherently pro zutara. my biggest gripe with the avatar fandom (also lowkey shipping culture in general) is that if you criticize one ship then that must mean you are pro the opposing ship. its very toxic that in advocating for healthier portrayal of love, you must offer another ship. katara is not some prize to be won over and neither aang or zuko are the winners.
also please if you guys wish to offer some counter points i’m always up for a friendly debate. i will not tolerate any hateful comments on my page. this is a safe place for all ships (kataang, zutara, zukka, taang, etc). please be respectful 🫶💗
figured out why k/taang bothered me as a kid.
Most children's media I watched back then was primarily directed at young boys, and atla was no different. Aang is the main character, and the center of the main romance (although this was very much not the focus of the show), which is mostly shown from his perspective. The writers also talk about it from his POV. Katara is the cute older girl who sees Aang like a little kid she needs to take care of. She loves him "like a babysitter, like a little brother". But there's the wish fulfillment; even though you’re a goofy kid, the pretty older girl likes you back. I had seen that dynamic, that perspective, in kids media over and over and over again. It was always the girl who changed her mind. And as a girl who couldn't relate, it always felt like watching her get worn down. (disclaimer: these were my feelings, I'm aware they don't reflect the writers' intentions)
K/taang, from its inception, right from the mouths of the writers, was always about what Aang wanted, his wish fulfillment. What little boys would want to see.
The difference in zutara is that it’s not a male-centered fantasy. It’s not that the girl will come around eventually, it’s that the guy has to work and change to be her friend. It's female-centric. Even k/taang fans seem to recognize this, although they view it pejoratively. “You like Zuko cause he’s hot and you project onto Katara” Look, I’m gay so no I don’t want to date Zuko, but yeah womanhood is central to Katara's arc and so I relate to her more than I do Zuko or Aang. Of course the idea that someone would change to gain your respect is more appealing than being worn down into liking someone you just previously treated like your child. And hey! Romance is wish fulfillment! I’m sorry, is that supposed to be shameful?
K/taang fans have this constant misunderstanding that zutara is shallow and so are its fans. It's all about the aesthetic appeal of Zuko over Aang. Honestly the way they talk about it sometimes smacks of misogyny. No you can’t find this relationship deep or meaningful, you just think Zuko is hot. You don’t like their dynamic or development, you just project onto Katara because you think Zuko is hot. You dont like zutara over k/taang because they’re completely different kinds of ships that appeal to different tastes, you just think Zuko is hot and Aang isn't.
Because women can’t possibly think deeply about these things, they’re shallow and insipid, obviously. Do you hear yourselves?
I like Katara and Zuko together more because k/taang reminds me of every other male fantasy I had to see women be accessories to. Katara may be her own character in the show, with an arc and development and independence, but in her romance with Aang, she's just his girl.
