The way Gillian Flynn writes white women…

Ok so like normally when I read/watch anything that is written by a white person and has mostly white characters I normally think to myself “xyz character would’ve been more interesting if they were black/poc” or “this needs to be more diverse etc” but not with Gillian Flynn….like don’t get me wrong I’d love if there were more poc in her writing (why I can’t WAIT for widows) but like…I didn’t read/watch gone girl and think Amy should’ve been black, same w/sharp objects and I always wondered why I never thought this. Then it dawned on me, she (more than any white female writer out there) writes about the dangers of white feminity in such a gruesome and familiar way. something that may not be familiar to the culture as a whole (a culture that puts ww on a pedastal and coddles them hell thats a big point being made in gone girl) but is familiar to poc (esp black ppl). White women using feminity/whiteness to kill/harm ppl on the fringes of society (the three girls Amma kills are 2 nongender conforming white girls and a little black girl and now think of how many ww got black ppl killed) white women using their whiteness/feminity/presumed innocence as a cover for there bad deeds etc. the cruelty of white housewives and little white girls. All recurring themes in her writing. All things unknown to white society but WELL known to and feared by black society. Idk if she does it on purpose but damn she does it well

Anyway this is a bit of a incomplete/sloppy analysis and I’m no expert on her writing or kno much about her opinions on things but still ☕️

anyways we’re living in an age where books written by women about women, books that would have been dismissed as “feminine poolside literature” only like a decade ago, are being adapted by premium cable networks into some of the most critically claimed and respected television shows of this era. female narratives and female hardships are being given a lot more weight and respect and that’s Beautiful

A WRINKLE IN TIME is PURE MAGIC. Somehow I managed to get through a fairly well-read childhood without it, but now I’m ready for what is sure to be my favorite movie. (ICYMI it has my personal hero Mindy Kaling, Best-of-the-Chrises Pine plus a couple of up-and-comers Reese Witherspoon and Oprah Winfrey in it). Go read it to your kids. It’s great. ALRIGHT. Week 3/Book 3 of #52booksin52weeks is Weird In A World That’s Not by @jennromolini (managing editor of Shondaland.com which is a great place to go on a terrible internet). It’s about making your way in the professional world when you’re a little (to use @chloemax1’s word) quirky.

THREE THINGS (plus three selfies to go with them): 1) Wearing black today because #TimesUp. Let’s just try in the year of our Lord two thousand and eighteen to be cool to each other and not say gross things to each other at work and/or literally anywhere else. Also if @lauradern, @reesewitherspoon and @kerrywashington ALL want you to do a thing, you do it. 2) Oh my Chasing Slow. This was a great book to start #52booksin52weeks. @erinloechner inspired me to write and decorate and breath and love and I cannot wait to use her wisdom for the year to come. 3) WEEK 2/BOOK 2 is A Wrinkle In Time! There’s nothing I’m more excited for than Ava DuVernay’s movie (which we’re all going to for my birthday, right?). Plus, once again, it’s what Reese (and Mindy Kaling and Oprah) would want me to do. (at Boise, Idaho)
