We have shown them vulnerable. We have shown them that a trembling hand can become a fist. We have challenged the idea that a slave must always know his place, accepting because he was taught to accept it. We built the mighty republic, with our hands, and our blood, and our lives. And we can see it fall, at equal cost.

i liked castus. he was a cool bro. and i don’t like that there’s so much hate on him because he threw a wrench in the machine that is nagron. because castus as a person actually makes a whole lot of sense to me.

Kinda upsets me that we didn’t get the kiss from the script, but hey .. better than nothing right? And still mega cute! Though yes, I was kinda hoping for more passion as their last kiss before they go out on the battle field. But, they lived [YAY!] so surely they have lots more sexy-times to come (we unfortunately won’t get to watch like the perves we are this time though). xD
I’m surely in the minority with this, but I actually prefer the way the scene was shot in the end. The hug, and Agron kissing the side of Nasir’s head, conveys a lot more emotion than a simple kiss would have been able to, in my opinion. But hey, that’s just me. I get why people would have preferred one last kiss, but I personally love the scene just the way it is.
Several people have pointed out how Nasir is *shutting down* or *putting his Tiberius mask back on*, which I completely agree with.
Now I made a post yesterday how both Agron and Castus were basically telling Nasir how he feels/how he has to feel/what he’s supposed to do. What occurred to me today while rummaging through my huge drawer of Nasir feels, is something that pisses me off to no end.
Nasir retreating to showing barely a reaction at all (again: in regards to both Agron and Castus), made me think that maybe that is because he tries to see the blame in himself. He obviously thinks that both Castus and Agron are wrong in what they are saying to him, but he becomes quiet, possibly pondering over a) he may have shown Castus the wrong signals and b) how Agron may actually be right in his decision and the more mature/responsible one in the conversation.
If we assume that a slave/master relationship is classified inherently abusive, then Nasir’s reaction would be absolutely fitting, because there are still traces of this mindset that he hasn’t shaken off yet. I don’t think a year (maybe?) is enough to get rid of behavioural structures that were once ingrained and essential for survival (!!!). I am convinced that this stuff still shapes some of his interaction with people, even if he doesn’t want it to. Abusive partners tend to make their partner believe that everything is their fault, and partners being abused often accommodate to their partners, to avoid conflict. (I know this is *very* generally spoken and not really academic, I’m just speaking from personal experience, which of course totally shapes my opinion on this.). I feel like Nasir is not really over this. Of course the relations between a slave and his dominus are wildly different from a romantic relationship, but I feel like some basic things still linger within Nasir and reflect in his behaviour when it comes to the people he is closest to.
When Castus tells him that Nasir must like him, even though he said several times that he didn’t, Nasir seems to immediately doubt himself (that’s my interpretation, although I have read it from other people too). That is exactly why this scene made ME froth and foam at the mouth. Because that’s exactly a manipulating technique abusers use. Making you question yourself and your behaviour over things that didn’t even occur to you before, making you blame yourself. (Disclaimer: I’m not calling Castus an abuser here, just saying that he did certain things in this particular scene that might be familiar to Nasir.)
If Nasir thinks that maybe he “invited Castus by behaving a certain way”, then my heart will be shattered. The thought that Nasir even for a minute thinks about this, makes me hurt. Badly.
And then Agron. Holding a speech (hmmm…), illustrating his points about how it is totally right for him to seperate and how everything is done out of love for Nasir, that he has to leave him, even though Nasir says he doesn’t want him to. Agron thinks he’s stating pure facts in this conversation, rather than the debatable opinion they are, and doesn’t allow Nasir to protest or interject really.
Nasir obviously doesn’t think Agron’s right in this. Yet he falters and kinda gives in to Agron’s opinion, and the look upwards when he and Agron hug is so telling. He doesn’t know what to do. Then, when they give each other the infamous *goodbye nod*, it seems to me like the doubts about his own feelings have prompted Nasir to try to just stop feeling at all. His face. Nothing. Remember his eyes when he talked to Agron before, and then look at his face. There is nothing left.
My heart strongly wishes for Nasir to have come to the conclusion that nothing will change Agron’s mind anyway, so he refuses to let the pain consume him. BUT, if Nasir actually, because of the things illustrated above, gave in to doubting himself, up to the point that he tricked himself into thinking that maybe afterall Agron was right and he himself didn’t think it through well enough…then again, my heart will be shattered.
To be clear: I’m not calling Agron or Castus abusers here, I’m just saying that maybe Nasir reacts to them in a way that previously was the only one he knew, because of the abusive nature of his relations from when he was a slave. And that is one of the things that hurt me the most about this episode.
I believe in Nasir. I want to. I want him to realize that the life that once was all he knew, if forever over.
nor love was really just a gateway for more nasir meta
I’m just so intrigued by the massive amount of miscommunication that managed to happen between Agron and Nasir during episode eight when very little actual talking happened. Because what Agron sees and acts on is the fact that Nasir is in love and utterly deserving of his freedom, and Agron is willing to give them up so he can have that.
But.
Nasir is in love with his freedom, but his freedom and his love for Agron have always been tied up together. To him, freedom doesn’t necessarily mean having the agency to make daily choices for himself. It means embracing who he really is and the emotions, desires, and wishes that come along with that without having to hide behind shame and fear. If he and Agron had somehow still been slaves when they met and fell in love, Nasir might not have let himself have that because the danger would be too high. He wouldn’t have let himself stand up to those more powerful and say, “This is who I am, this is who I love.” Freedom to him is having the power to simply live as he sees fit without apologizing for it.
And here we have a marked difference between someone who was captured late in life and spent a relatively short time in slavery vs. someone who was born and raised in it. Agron was never forced to deny himself who he was, not even at the ludus. What changed was not being able to make choices about what he did and when. Which is actually very close to a militaristic lifestyle. Which is what he means when he talks of sending Nasir to “true freedom.” He’s seen Nasir grow into the man he was always meant to be, but he’s still taking orders because he’s a soldier, from Spartacus, from Crixus, from Agron himself.Â
Agron wants Nasir to be able to go about his day the way he wants to, and all Nasir wants is to be at the side of the man he loves fighting for a cause he’s grown to believe in with his entire heart.
The miscommunication stems from Agron presuming to know Nasir’s needs and Nasir not understanding that Agron has a different concept of freedom than he does. This is Nasir feeling that Agron is sending him away. This is Nasir listening to Agron and hearing, “I still care for you but I would rather stick to my old ways than change them to be with you. We don’t have a future together.”
Neither of them are being selfish in this. In fact, they are both being unbelievable self-sacrificing. Agron is giving them up so Nasir can have the life he thinks he deserves. Nasir is letting him go because what good is convincing him to stay if it’s not what he wants? It’s a classic case of loving someone so much you have to let them leave. Only they don’t understand the other’s motivations at all, and that’s what makes it heartbreaking.
It took them five days and five nights to cross the mountains, stopping almost hourly to give rest to the wounded, to the old, and to the grieving. Agron has worn the title of leader in some aspect or another for years, but taking on the responsibility of hundreds has been no easy thing, not with food in short supply and the knowledge that a Roman army arriving from behind would surely be an end to them. Few among them could fight, and he himself would be of little use.
But the foot of the mountains had come, and the Romans had not, and Agron had stood with Nasir’s hand in his as they watched hundreds of free men, women, and children spread across the beckoning country in all directions of the wind. Some fifty have remained under their guidance, unsure of where to go. A small caravan of tents winding their way north towards the Rhine.
Tonight, Agron’s heart is light.
They share a tent – large, a creation born of those who would stay close – with Laeta, with Alba and her son, with Sybil and Belesa and Iovita and Aki, motherless children who have taken to the two women like pups.
Agron would mind the lack of privacy were it not for the comforting hush of his friends’ sleeping breath. After all he has survived the past week – the final battle that claimed most of his friends, the death and burial of Spartacus at the foot of the mountain, the long trek to the other side – for now, to just hold the weight of Nasir’s sleeping body is enough.
Their legs entangled, Nasir has fallen asleep half on top of Agron, his arm slung across his chest, cupping his cheek with his hand, his head tucked into the crook of Agron’s neck. They are both so cut and bruised and avoiding injury has become so impossible that it no longer matters. All that matters is the pressing closeness of their bodies against the other.
He brushes his fingertips softly along the length of Nasir’s exposed arm, reveling in the warmth he feels emanating from it. He thrills in it – not the dull sensations of the weeks past, but feeling. Vibrant. Alive. Returning. Perhaps one day he will again regain control of his grip and motor functions, but at the moment he treasures the gift of Nasir’s soft skin at his fingers.
Though Nasir sleeps, Agron twists to press a kiss to the top of his head, still disbelieving the gods’ humor that has seen them both from the jaws of death to the promise of a future together. Nasir sighs contentedly, and Agron hopes his dreams are filled with visions of the days to come.
That Nasir sleeps through Agron loudly rifling through his nightstand drawer for lube is a miracle. Eventually he finds it, jammed at the very back like Nasir’s trying to hide it or something.
“Nasir?” He shakes his shoulder lightly.
Nasir makes a noise and turns his head away.
“Nasir!” He kisses him wetly behind his ear. “Baby?”
Nasir shifts, blinks.
“Nasir, love, gorgeousest guy ever. Wakey-wakey.”
“What.” Nasir glares at him through heavy-lidded eyes.
“Wanna have sex?”
Nasir groans and pulls the cover over his head.
Agron pulls it down mercilessly. He’s horny, dammit. “Pretty please.” Agron kisses him sloppily. “I’ll ride you. Hard. You can just lie there, letting me fuck myself on you. Did I tell you your cock’s awesome?”
“M’ feeling used,” Nasir mumbles.
“That a yes?”
