I’m putting together SWELL, a zine that will focus on the aspects of art and media that give us happy hearts, and I’m seeking submissions in any form — short blurbs, essays, poetry, illustrations, lists, playlists, meta — detailing the funny, weird specifics of your go-to mood-boosting pop culture interests and obsessions. Tell me about the odd way you organize your collection of memoirs written by female comedians. Describe, using words and pictures, the first tears you ever cried over a passage in a book. Write a sonnet for your favorite TV character using only Taylor Swift lyrics and the names of plants. Really proud of the tag meta you wrote dissecting your favorite fanfic tropes? Ever make a beautiful collage of Martin Scorsese’s smiling face? Have a great idea for a Grey’s Anatomy haiku? If you would classify your favorite thing as “sorta random” and if it makes your heart puff up like a warm contented balloon, SWELL is the space for you to wax poetic.

Look, as fans and feminists and media-savvy humans we spend a lot of time dissecting the pop culture we consume. This analysis is necessary and productive, but there’s no reason it can’t be supplemented by a hearty dose of uninhibited geekery.

Share what you love, no matter how niche or offbeat. Share what you love about it, loud ‘n proud. Let’s celebrate together.
