The fingerprinting and creation of a MY ID Club card is helpful in finding and identifying missing children. The MY ID CLUB identification card should be updated at least once a year or sooner should any information, either personal or medical change. NCMEC Information on Child ID Cards

The King County Police Union's My ID Club provides parents and families with a personalized identification card for their children at no charge. With the help of services provided by My ID Club, police officers are able to easily determine a child’s home address, and the ID cards can also alert emergency technicians to allergies and other important medical information. Each year, nearly 800,000 children under the age of 18 are reported missing in the United States, according to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC). This number translates to more than 2,100 missing children every day. With these figures in mind, the NCMEC suggests that guardians contact local police departments to learn about personal identification cards for children. While the information on an identification card can be invaluable to law enforcement agents and medical professionals, the information should otherwise only be available to a child’s parents or guardians. A child’s full name, address, and home phone number should never be entered into a centralized database, due to security vulnerabilities. Furthermore, the NCMEC advises families to maintain a color photograph clearly displaying a child’s face at all times for identification purposes. MY ID CLUB To Participate in Kent Cornucopia Days

MY ID CLUB is a child safety program of the King County Police Union that creates identification cards for children. Each card includes the child’s photo, medical information, and emergency contacts and can help first responders obtain immediate information in case of an injury, or help the child return to safety if he or she is lost. This July, MY ID CLUB will participate in Kent Cornucopia Days, the largest family festival in south King County, and will assist the Maple Valley Police Department with their Maple Valley Kids Day 2016. We will also attend the Boeing Family Days in Pierce County. These larger events highlight July but are only a few of the many places we'll be active at that in July and though out teh summer season. Held in downtown Kent, the festival is an annual community service project of the Kent Lions Foundation. There is a street fair with a wide selection of food and commercial vendors, as well as a beer garden for adults. The carnival offers rides for all ages, and the festival includes a parade and several stages featuring music and dance performances, along with other entertainment such as the Miss Cornucopia Pageant. Several athletic events also take place at the festival. Nearly 50 teams from the US and Canada will be competing in dragon boat races on scenic Lake Meridian. There will also be a 5k Fun Run and the Kent Cornucopia Cup youth soccer tournament. The free, four-day Kent Cornucopia Days festival is a fun annual community event for the whole family.

Night Out Against Crime Strengthens Community Connections

Helping parents keep their children safe, MY ID CLUB offers photo IDs for children in the King County area of Washington. This August, MY ID CLUB will participate in the Issaquah and Kenmore Police Departments' annual Night Out Against Crime events. The free community events offer food and activities, along with personal and home safety education for every member of the family. The annual gatherings help to raise awareness about crime and drug prevention, and strengthen each community’s relationship with their police force. The Night Out Against Crime is a nation-wide event celebrated in neighborhoods all over the US. Many neighborhoods host block parties with potlucks, barbecues, and games for kids. Representatives from local police forces and emergency response teams are often on hand to answer questions and provide information. Gathering together as a community helps to support local anticrime initiatives and sends the message to criminals that the neighborhood is united against crime.

SCOPE - A Community Initiative of the Spokane Sheriff's Office

My ID Club is a child safety program established by the King County Police Union to provide a resource to Washington State parents and guardians. For over 20 years, My ID Club has distributed free child identification cards to parents and children, often partnering with community safety initiatives such as the Spokane Sheriff’s SCOPE Program. Designed to improve community safety and prevent crime, SCOPE is a partnership between Spokane residents and law enforcement. In addition to encouraging resident awareness and engagement regarding safety issues, the program serves as a way to foster community spirit. As SCOPE volunteers, Spokane County residents operate a network of 18 SCOPE stations located throughout the region. In addition, community volunteers assist with a wide variety of safety programs, including neighborhood watch initiatives, latent fingerprint lifting, bike safety programs, and graffiti prevention. Citizen volunteers also can take part in the Citizens on Patrol, or COP, program that provides neighborhood safety patrols and property checks.

Since 1997, My ID Club has partnered with law enforcement groups to distribute child identification cards to families. My ID Club distributes these cards at community events, where the organization's representatives help children and families learn strategies for staying safe in public. Teaching stranger safety to children can be a difficult and delicate task. Parents want their children to be able to avoid potentially dangerous situations, but most do not want to make them instantly fearful of everyone they meet. Experts suggest that parents can strike this balance by presenting clear guidelines about communicating with adults and by helping the child to understand what a dangerous situation might look like. Parents often find it helpful to have a conversation with their children about who the official helpers are in their communities. Police officers, firefighters, teachers, and librarians are adults in children's lives that they can recognize as safe, and this knowledge can encourage children to seek help in a public place if they feel they are in danger. Similarly, children can learn that if they become lost in a store or other similar location, a name tag typically indicates that the wearer works at the store and can offer assistance. No rule is absolutely universal, however, and for this reason children should learn what to do if they feel uncomfortable around an adult. Experts recommend reminding children that adults should not ask children for assistance, request they keep a secret, or demand they disobey their parents. In such situations, or in other situations in which a child feels something is wrong, a child should know to leave the scene and find a safe person to help. Children as young as 4 years old can begin learning their first and last names, as well as their parents full names, so that these helpers can more easily reunite them with their parents.

The Formation of Public Safety Employees Union 519

Located in Seattle Washington, the King County Police Union/Public Safety Employees 519 has been the organization behind My ID Club since 1997. They have provided over 400,000 free identification cards to children under 16. As a result of its incredible success and popularity the King County Police Union has focused its fundraising efforts on the My ID Club child safety program. In existence since 1962, the Public Safety Employees Union 519 was formed by the efforts of King County Sheriff’s Office employees who served the rural community and worked under the direction of an elected sheriff. A problem existed with the size of the department and an individual’s ability to move up within it. Although people voted to enact civil service to eradicate this problem in 1959, there was still an immediate need to improve working conditions. Thus, the union was created. Dustin Fredericks has been the organizations Business Manager since the early 1990's and was instrument is the early development of The MY ID CLUB. Entering it's 20 year, the MY ID CLUB is now the longest running and most successful community outreach program of any public safety organization in Washington State.

During an average one-year period, law enforcement officials receive approximately 800,000 missing-child reports. According to law enforcement professionals, there are three major types of child abductions. In nearly half of cases, 49 percent, the abductor is a family member, with known acquaintances the perpetrator in 27 percent of abduction cases. Strangers are the abductor in 24 percent of child kidnappings. In most cases, the first contact between strangers and their kidnap victims occurs within a quarter-mile of the child's home. While officials do find most child-abduction victims alive, acting quickly is imperative, since most kidnappers who do kill their victims do so within three hours.
