For anyone who only sees gender and sex in black and white, here’s proof by the lovely humon that nature is just as fluid with representations of gender and sex as we are.
I remember reading about the Hyena’s before and thinking it was super cool.

The Sadness (by anne manteleers*)
Are High Neurotic People More Absorbed Into the Films they Watch than Low Neurotics?
In 2011, Weibel, Wissmath, and Stricker study whether people who are more neurotic are more absorbed into the films they watch. Using a 3 by 2 factorial design, 64 student participants complete the Neo Personality Inventory (NEO-FFI) that assesses neurotic level. Next, the participants are put into a Low or High Neurotic Groups based on NEO-FFI scores. Participants are also then asked to view three clips randomly ordered that are either funny, sad, or happy. The study then surveys the participant’s level of absorption into the clips (using Kim and Biocca’s (1997) Prsence Scale) and level of enjoyment (using a 5-point Likert Scale “Did you enjoy the film,” rate from 1-5, 5 for very much). The study finds that high neurotics rate level of absorption higher than low neurotics and that this was true regardless of whether the clips were funny, sad or happy. They also found that high neurotics rate level of enjoyment higher for the happy and funny clips and lower for the sad clip than the low neurotics. The researchers propose that high neurotics have a more reactive sympathetic nervous system and thus are more attentive to the clips and affected by emotions.

University students with their necks painted protest at Bolivar square in Bogota, Colombia, Thursday Nov. 3, 2011. Their signs read in Spanish “We have the right to be outraged,” left, and “Excellent education and for all!!” Students are protesting education reforms planned by the government that propose private funding for public institutions. On one hand this is awesome. On the other hand, this is horrifying.

NSFW! Australian government demands all vulva’s be digitally altered. “neat and tidy” only.
/Warning: The following video is ridiculously NSFW and contains graphic depictions of labia surgery./
This is a documentary from Hungry Beast called ‘healed to a single crease’- which is what the Australian Classification board demands be done to all depictions of female nether regions, stating any genital detail (clitoris, inner labia, pubic hair detail or volume) is too offensive and therefor illegal. The only acceptable vagina as far as the Classification Board is concerned is one that is ‘neat and tidy’ in their eyes.
The video shows interview with a doctor who performs labiaplasty, a photo editor who works for a porn company forced to digitally butcher normal vulvas and a member of the classification board who dodges questions like hell. I HIGHLY recommend watching it.
Considering the HUGE rise in labiaplasty in Australia (100% rise per year with now over 1000 women per year) with the number main cause being women thinking their bits look ‘odd’, when of course in fact they are perfectly normal; is it right to ask: Is Australia’s censorship of real bodies alienating a generation of women from their own natural, beautiful bodies?
As someone who works in the adult industry I’ve known this for a while. Until I found out about the laws I honestly thought I had a ‘disgusting hanging garden cunt’ and spent my whole puberty ashamed, embarrassed and depressed. I wanted to have surgery because I thought if I didn’t I would be able to work in my dream job. I have more than one close acquaintance who has had labiaplasty surgery because they felt they where ‘fugly down there’, because they didn’t look like every naked woman they’d ever seen in this country (healed to a single crease) when in fact they where perfectly normal and sexy.
It’s disturbing and wrong to enforce standards that say what womens genitals should and shouldn’t look like- especially when you’re effectively making the most common types of womens bits illegal to portray. Just like Australia banning small breasts citing it encourages pedophiles, regardless of the performers age.
This is a peice I wrote on my feminist blog that I thought I’d share with you as it’s become relevant.
Australia HATES natural healthy women- so much so our genitals are considered ‘obscene’ and are ILLEGAL to portray in any media if they look like healthy, adult vaginas. This includes me and MY vagina- Because I don’t have a vagina that looks like it did when I was 6 years old- showing it in photos or video here is illegal. No joke. No catch. It’s fucked up- and you should all know about it and be angry! Especially if you are an Aussie.
THINGS THAT PISS ME OFF.
UGHHHHH FUCK YOU PATRIARCHY SERIOUSLY

An extremely rare cyclops shark has been confirmed in Mexico, new research shows.
The 22-inch-long (56-centimeter-long) fetus has a single, functioning eye at the front of its head—the hallmark of a congenital condition called cyclopia, which occurs in several animal species, including humans.
Earlier this year fisher Enrique Lucero León legally caught a pregnant dusky shark near Cerralvo Island in the Gulf of California. When León cut open his catch, he found the odd-looking male embryo along with its nine normal siblings. “He said, That’s incredible—wow,” said biologist Felipe Galván-Magaña, of the Interdisciplinary Center of Marine Sciences in La Paz, Mexico.
Once Galván-Magaña and colleague Marcela Bejarano-Álvarez heard about the discovery—which was put on Facebook—the team got León’s permission to borrow the shark for research. The scientists then x-rayed the fetus and reviewed previous research on cyclopia in other species to confirm that the find is indeed a cyclops shark.
Cyclops sharks have been documented by scientists a few times before, also as embryos, said Jim Gelsleichter, a shark biologist at the University of North Florida in Jacksonville. The fact that none have been caught outside the womb suggests cyclops sharks don’t survive long in the wild.
Overall, finding such an unusual animal reinforces that scientists still have a lot to learn, Gelsleichter added.
“It’s a humbling experience to realize you ain’t seen it all yet.”
