Where do you live? Dumpstering tips?

Hi, I live in southern Germany :)

Tips for dumpster diving:

First check if it is legal/illegal to dumpster dive where you live.I would recomend to google “dumpster diving *town you live in*” this normaly gives you a good idea what the law and legal situation is like.

For the first dive I would recomend going with someone who has done it before, because they now where to go (which supermarket etc) and what the situation there is like.

Be prepared to get dirty! Dumpster are super dirty sometimes. Bring gloves, because you don’t want to touch everything in there, trust me.

Go at night, after the shop has closed to prevent encountering staff and get “caught”. If you get caught anyway stay calm, explain what you are doing to the police if they come. Depending on the law at your place they either don’t do anything or tell you to put it back and leave or in some cases they will report you to the authorities.

At the dumpsters, don’t take everything. I know that finding tons of food is amazing, but think about where you will store it at and who will eat all the stuff. About what to take: this is a good and easy guide on what to take or not to take http://imgur.com/kOmhtc9.

Leave the dumpster at least as clean as you found it and don’t break anything because if the staff sees that something is broken or there is a realy bad mess they will lock the dumpsters away.

At home, wash everything you dumpstered with water. I wash fruits and vegies with vinegar as well so everything is clean.

And last: enjoy the free food :) share it with friends and help reduce the food waste.

11 sauce packs “Rustikale Filet-Pfännchen” 24 sauce packs “Ofen-Tortelloni” 47 sauce packs “Jäger Spätzle” 24 eggs (sadly one had a crack which we didn’t see before taking the picture) 1 pack m&m 2 packs chocolate waffels 2 packs pocky (mikado) white 3 packs gummy bears 1 pack curd cheese 6 packs fake oreo 1 pack cheese crackers 1 large snack box (different salty snacks) 2 packs potato dumpling 3 packs nuts and berries cookies all the sauce packs would be worth about 80€ if you’d buy them at a store. Those eggs are still pretty fresh, but one egg was broken in a pack of 10 so they throw the whole pack away… the best before date is 22nd march.

Whee, what a dive! I went back home to get an additional bag because my backpack was way too small.

Unfortunately, they emptied their dumpsters earlier that day, so this is all we got:

This is only about a third of what we found yesterday. So sad...

Yet another haul. All this good food is thrown away because "it's not perfect anymore".
