This week, we’re talking about ABC’s summer series about psychics, vampires, angels, and more based on novels by Charlaine Harris. We’re joined by our good friend Marie Ann Fernandez-Silva to talk about why this one…didn’t quite work for us.

I had the truly, unironically #blessed opportunity to see the original Twitter investigation of Handbook for Mortals when it first appeared on the NYT Bestseller list. For a moment, Book Twitter came together, like the repressed Veronica Marses they are, and detected the shit out of the book no one had heard of that pushed (the amazing, worth the hype) The Hate U Give from its number one spot.
Since then, the case has only gotten stranger, partly because the author, Lani Sarem, seems to be completely unapologetic about what she’s done.
I have to admit that I was curious about the book from moment one. Snarking bad books is kind of a thing for me. Thus started the war within between ignoring her and hoping it would all go away and dragging the book because it had to be shit, right?
Right, well, here we are.
The first page starts with ms whoever saying she's NEVER had a "normal" day before. NEVER. Maybe brief normal moments. #snarkformortals

Hi Marines, I just wanted to say that I love your booktube channel so much, specially your reviews of sjm books where you highlight problems. I think you were one the first people, that I knew, who took to explain what was wrong rather than conforming to what the booktube community already thought. Also as a POC, I appreciate your social media presence and I feel like there is someone who understands what I mean, when I talk about diversity. Sending much love!
Thank you so much! My reviews of Throne of Glass and ACOTAR were some of the first that I ever made. I felt confident in what I wanted to say, but I remember being a little intimidated because I hadn’t seen very many creators who gave super critical reviews. I’m so happy that people appreciate those reviews and my content overall. Honestly, thank you again.
I’m on a little bit of a BookTube break because I got worn out by the diversity discussion recently, so this piece of encouragement was much needed. It reminds me why I keep speaking up and speaking out and why I keep reviewing critically and specifically.
Lastly, guys if there is a creator out there who you appreciate, let them know! It’s one of many ways we can support content creation and it helps spread some love, especially when times are tough.
Hi, I was wondering what made you and Marines decide to start your own con? I know that you guys want to create a more inclusive space for specifically booktube people of all walks, but what happened at BEA to give you guys the spark? Just general atmosphere or something specific? I think I missed that, as I am a relatively new follower. I do think it's an awesome idea though, and I am currently trying to see if I can work it into my schedule <3
Not a problem :) We were actually planning this before the BEA stuff happened, but got even more motivation once that fell through.
This coming year, BEA has decided to severely limit the amount of book reviewers they will allow to attend, and are basing that off of following. No one knows where this magical number of followers sits, but it drastically limits the amount of people who will be allowed to go. In addition, they have implemented an extreme vetting process in which you, as a reviewer, have to detail what you do in a professional capacity every day to promote the book industry and provide references. That also limits a ton of people, including younger reviewers who do so much for promotion but don’t have references. They also had some icky language in articles that came out around this time talking about “millennial girls” in a condescending way as if all reviewers fall into that category and as if they don’t want to turn around and take millennial girls money (which they do… if you even take one look at BookCon’s advertising). Not to mention that BEA is a PAYED event! Reviewers pay the crazy ticket prices to get there, to promote the event, to get the books to promote, etc. The whole thing was a mess and really the last straw for a lot of people.
We had already been planning to start a con because we wanted more from book events. We were sick of all of the topics pertaining to reviewers spewing the same stuff, appealing to the most beginner level. Yes, beginner advice panels have merit. But not every panel and not at every event. We wanted more. We wanted to see more than the same 10 faces on every panel. We wanted all bookish platforms to be included. We didn’t want just YA reviewers, but everyone and every genre. We wanted time for people to hang out (because that’s the most fun about book events anyway…hanging out with friends you barely get to see, not the running like banshees for arcs).
We wanted more. And that’s why we started this event.
are snark squad recapping oitnb any time? Or s3 of vm? :)
I’ve got no plans to watch or recap OITNB in the near future. I’ve heard good things but it doesn’t call out to me and there is already so much stuff on our list of things to do sooner….
Like S3 of Veronica Mars. I promise you, we are working on this sloooowly. We’ve got the first 3 episodes done and ready to post, but we’re waiting until we have the whole season near to done before posting so we don’t leave everyone hanging again.
Hiya, I'm writing a book which contains an African American female as one of my main characters and I hope I'm not bothering you by asking, but I was just wondering about how to write physical descriptors. Because for the most part if I want to indicate her physical appearance, I'll write 'dark skin' or state 'African American' but I came to this one line when I'm introducing her and I say 'The black girl inquired'. Is that okay? I probably seem stupid asking I'm just trying to learn & am unsure
Your question absolutely does not seem stupid. Thank you for asking even if I’m so bad at Tumblr sometimes, this reply is probably super late. Anyway, I’m primarily going to direct you to this post that serves as a description guide: http://writingwithcolor.tumblr.com/post/96830966357/writing-with-color-description-guide-words-for
I often describe myself as brown or a brown person or something along those lines and a lot of time it makes non-brown people uncomfortable…? I think there is a weird feeling attached to calling someone brown or black as if it’s a bad thing. It isn’t! I hope that post is helpful and good luck on your writing journey.

Today I’m talking about the lack of diversity on YouTube and within BookTube and what we can do to change that.
*Hint: it involves checking out the channels of these wonderful, diverse creators making videos about books. I want to keep adding to this list, so if you are a POC BookTuber, let me know and I’ll add you!

I’m assuming if you’re reading this, you’re already up to speed on what’s going on. If not, read this. Ok, I’m just going to jump in:
In his video, Steve admits to purposely going out and watching BEA videos that he claims to hate, so I can only assume that he did so in order to maliciously mock and belittle people.
He then refers to the people at BEA and the popular authors there as fake readers and undeserving authors. 100% he is talking about YA authors. And for me, this struck a particular nerve, because so much of the discrediting of the YA category is based on internalized sexism - the idea that anything written by women or enjoyed by young girls is inherently shallow and lesser.
Then, after all of that, in the comments of the video he continues by writing:
Now, I want to stop here for a moment to point out that this is not just a booktuber. This man is also a professional reviewer - someone in the industry and with a position of power in publishing vocalizing (both in the video and the comment) what is an ALL TOO COMMON criticism thrown at women - that we’re shallow and fake, that we’re not intelligent, that the things we create and enjoy are unworthy.
When pressed on this view, he did not try to clarify or understand where the frustration was coming from. Instead, he lashed out and referred to the people upset by it as insane or not “thinking people.“ And in all his following comments and in a short video, his response to the entire thing has 100% been to only continue to belittle the feelings and opinions of others.
Now I will admit this: the two comments I left were snarky (in the blog I linked above, Elisabeth includes both of them in her discussion on the topic incase you want to judge for yourself). Why? Because I was frustrated at seeing yet another white man mocking not only women but also people and a community I care deeply about. If you post something on the internet mocking and belittling people, do not be surprised when they see it and don’t take kindly to it. And just like you are free to have your opinions and say whatever you want, the people you are hurting also are allowed to voice their opinions. Do I see either of the two comments I left as taking things too far? No. Do I regret them or discussing this on Twitter with other fellow creators who felt attacked by the video and comment? No.
Over on Twitter, people turned their frustration into an important discussion around the hashtag #FakeReaderGirls. I want to give a shout-out here to Mari, who not only wrote amazing commentary on everything that happened during and after the peak of the discussion, but she also helped raise up the voices of other girls and validate their choices as readers and people. You can read her breakdown on why this is more than just one video or one comment here and her thoughts on the backlash here.
Now, in the comments section of Steve’s video, there are some comments that call him names and are much more obviously angry. Do I think this approach works to further discussion? No. Would I ever advocate in favor for it? No. But I will also never question the anger of marginalized people. That anger and frustration is valid, even if the content of what they said was mean (although, tangentially, as someone who has had people on the internet throw everything from racist to sexist slurs at me just because I uttered the word “feminist” or once said I didn’t like that Orson Scott Card was homophobic, the comments on Steve’s video seemed mostly tame).
Plus, these commenters were, again, such a small part of a much bigger and important discussion that extends beyond Steve’s original video. It is a shame that we’re silencing an entire discussion because a couple people decided to go more on the offensive.
Unless I’m missing something, however, those handful of angry comments were basically the only ones he really had to experience. Meanwhile, a larger group of commenters decided to defend Steve by spouting off gross anti-woman and anti-feminist speech. And many of the people who decided to try and discuss the topic in general on twitter were met with much the same (if not far worse) hatred and bullying.
I want to end this on a note about discussions and “drama.” Here’s the thing: just because a discussion makes someone uncomfortable does not make it drama. Movements towards change are not always going to be filled with rainbows - sometimes conversations are tough. Sometimes people won’t always respond politely when they’re being attacked. And just because a group of women try to discuss frustrations or find solidarity with each other, does not make them a mob or insane. My hope for booktube is that we can have important discussions about gender, race, sexuality, ableism, and so on without it being written off as drama.
