To that end here are some shop related announcements: - I will not be doing any holiday related sales. I would rather keep my prices affordable all year than mark everything up 20% just to discount it a couple times a year. So good news no fomo! Buy what you want and don't worry about waiting! - I can't guarantee shipping times. I drop stuff off at the post office every other day but USPS is unpredictable especially with first class mail. The USPS has been hobbled by Louis DeJoy and other corrupt political cronies. Get mad at them for screwing up the mail. Write your congresspeople. Seriously. Unfortunately I won't be able to go to the event I made them for but my Día de los Muertos dekotora kei truck rainbow holographic stickers arrived today. And that combination of word salad makes me extremely happy! Swipe to see the sticker not moving as well as my cleaned up drawing. They are truly the technicolor nightmare of my deepest heart's desire. If I were a rich man (you're welcome now that you have *that* stuck in your head) I would skip going to space but absolutely would make a tiny neon terror truck to roam the desert wastes with. Look what finally showed up! Apologies for the potato quality video. My phone is not having it these days and I couldn't be arsed to properly shoot and edit video tonight. *first world whining* It's really hard to take a selfie when the screen of your phone is delaminating and it gives every front camera photo perpetual soap opera filter and not even a fun one like a telenovela or a kdrama but instead you're stuck with late 80's All My Children Anyhoo... This was the very ridiculous hat I wanted to make but also used as R&D for a different much bigger project. I think there's something existentially funny about writing stuff on the of hats especially if you're very tall or very smol. Plus it's much less aggressive than my "dipshit" beanie. I made it out of scrap lambskin from a commission I did last year, part of a leather sofa I skinned, and some cotton fabric I stress purchased after a really awful doctor's appointment. The brim in this one isn't reinforced with plastic. Approaching the end of a sewing era. I am down to my last two yards of holographic velvet. Unfortunately the manufacturer discontinued making this type of velvet so once it's gone it's goooone. So if you've been wanting something and have been putting it off please reach out ASAP! After these ship I will only have enough fabric in stock to make one more jacket or 3 pairs of shorts. I have been procrastinating hard on actually starting painting these. (Ahem booty shorts anyone?) It's been four years... yes FOUR WHOLE FRIGGIN YEARS... since I last did acrylics with a cad red medium underpainting. And now that I have the first of four mini paintings started I can say it's been really enjoyable. Did a bunch of sketches and research. Got distracted and made cookies. Did some more sketches and some preliminary painting line work. These two tiny sketches were my favorites of the day even if I'm feeling ambivalent about what my original plan for them was. But then again I've been feeling ambivalent about almost everything I've been doing lately. Ohmygehrd! I actually finished something before 2 am. 😹 I fell in love with the colors and print of this textured silk shirt but the style and huge honkin shoulder pads made it feel hopelessly dated. So it sat hanging above my desk for three months while I tracked down the right sleeve pattern, got distracted, got discouraged, got my shit together, made mock-ups, made the other shirt I posted and then finally sat down today and knocked it out in a couple of hours today. The star fabric came from another dress I made but was never happy with for an event wasn't able to attend and the buttons are vintage tuxedo buttons. These puff sleeves are my new favorite thing to make even though they are a slight pain in the ass. More importantly it feels good to have three finished projects in the can. I finally am confident enough to tackle a couple very special and long delayed projects that I was irrationally paralyzed about messing up. Oh look! Its not even midnight yet. Might as well going drive around in circles hoping something changes with my car. Yes really. A ribbon skirt? A skirt of ribbons? My "afternoon" project that turned into a two day affair. This upcycled denim skirt was very much inspired by the Native American plains tribes practice of making clothing out of ribbons. The skirt was in a bag of free clothes and needed some mending, and the rest was part of the craft hoard. I have written and rewritten this caption trying to parse out the complicated relationship between my love of the achingly beautiful technicolor dreams that are true ribbon skirts, their history, and how my existence as a white American intersects. Ultimately I will leave it as these are some good starting points: - Read up on the history and modern significance of the ribbon skirt - Follow and support modern indigenous designers and artists - Help support justice for Missing and Murdered Women as well as for the survivors and victims of residential schools It's not easy trying to make the world better. Have difficult conversations, make something beautiful, fight the good fight. I picked up this sweet little floral shirt for cheap but after washing it I realized it was in a bit of a sorry state. The seams were splitting, the armpits were discolored and the shoulders had holes. So it sat hanging above my desk for months without quite knowing what to do with it. It wasn't wearable but was too charming to get rid of. I had been working on 1920s sleeves for a different shirt and tonight thought well eff it. Tweaked the pattern slightly and here ya go! The upper arms were made out of a kimono style coverup that I liked but never wore and the lower arms of dress I made that never quite fit right. I reinforced the shoulders with some blue ribbon left over from a curtain project. I have been feeling really off my sewing game for a while now. Little inspiration and even less confidence. I'm glad I gave myself the space to do something low stakes and playful. I have a reoccurring dream when I need to make changes in my life that I'm looking for a yellow shirt in my closet that I can't ever find. I've realized a few things as I've been playing around with backgrounds. Left to my own devices I prefer secondary colors over primaries. Which, looking at my wardrobe and housewares, that tracks. Even tho I've been using Photoshop in one form or another for -holy crap- twenty years I'm always finding new ways to play with it. Stylized vehicles are stupid fun to draw.
