I cannot commit to the only b&w aethsetic but I will share my fav shots because there is something about a good 35mm shot (plus most of the cool shit happened before colored photoagraphfy was a thing)
Anyways this is the legendary Paradise Garage where Larry Levan would spin. If you don't know what's up, The Paradise Garage is widely considered the prototype for the modern nightclub, built specifically around the DJ and an unparalleled sound system designed by Richard Long.
Larry Levan was a DJ preacher; his "Saturday Mass" in this dance temple was a dope, fresh, genre-bending style that mixed disco, soul, funk, rock, and electronic music. He was the type of guy who could be spotted polishing the mirror balls during a set, I mean, really attentive and care for detail, and creating a positive experience for the members.
Unlike the BS Garbo commercial clubs like Studio 54, the Garage was a members-only oasis offering a safe space where people could be themselves and escape the harsh realities of life in this capitalistic death cult we call merica. The focus was purely on the music and the shared experience, and god i wish we had places like this still. Members only just sounds so good right about now. u have to do something to protect the vibe of a space if you believe it to be sacred (something worth protecting)
The “Levan Horn” was this massive custom sub named after Larry Levan — not just loud, but body-level loud. You didn’t just hear it, you felt it in your ribs.
Richard Long tuned the system twice a week with pink noise. Levan would tweak the amps mid-set as the room heated up and the crowd thickened. The sound wasn’t static — it was alive.
He cared so much he’d stop the music, grab a ladder, and polish the mirror balls if they weren’t shining right. Crowd would wait. Then lose their minds when it came back.
And the blackouts.
He’d cut the lights completely. Total darkness. Sometimes kill the music too. Just tension. Breath. Anticipation.
Then BOOM — lights slam back on, bass drops, room detonates.
High-end McIntosh amps, crystal clarity, deep sub pressure. No commercial nonsense. No distraction.
It wasn’t just a club.
It was directed (healing/hypmotic?) energy. Sound as a ceremony.
Guys, can we try to bring this back ????
