SO for the past years, including all of medschool (so far) and highschool, i studied wrong. I didnt know how to study, well i tried to do what i saw all the other people doing in school and what i saw people doing here on studyblrs.

I did the highlighting, i did the underlining, the rereading, the writing summaries of everything i read in separate notebooks, i tried drawing diagrams and making it pretty, making everything colorcoded…etc. And something that i noticed is that with every single method i would give up after 2 weeks. Not only that but i would lose time, and start being behind on my material, which frustrated me (and exhausted me mentally) so i gave up and as a result didnt end up studying to recharge which set me back further.

THis video came on my recommended a few days ago (the dude graduated medicine from Cambridge), and its literally so enlightening and makes me angry that no one told me about his earlier. The fact that they tested all these methods and realized they are “low utility methods” for studying and learning. and that there was one only one “high utility method” of learning and retaining your information–> ACTIVE RECALL 

kids who used active recall scored 30% higher on tests than all other methods!!!!

For those wondering what it is, its trying to recall all the things you learned by testing yourself on what you read. So lets say you read everything atherosclerosis, and then after you close the book or whatev, then ask yourself, what are all the causes of atherosclerosis, what is the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis, what drugs do i give to treat atherosclerosis, etc. ANother good way is to practice teaching someone else, or imagining your in a classroom teaching. Another way is using flashcards (albeit i think writing flashcards for everything is going to be a bit wasteful of time, ill test this briefly). And after you finish, you go back in the book and see all the stuff you got stuck on or forgot, then briefly review the question to yourself again. 

Im going to try this for the new school year and report back in a months time. Sharing for y’all if your feeling frustrated with school, i hope it helps!!!

i’ve been studying in a cafe with my friend for the past few days and it’s really effective. i get things done and i don’t have any distractions. i don’t even need to do the pomodoro technique. aaaaaah. i highly suggest trying group studying.
