Wanderlust and the archaeologist

I am currently an archaeology major working on my second BA (I've always wanted to do archaeology, but for some reason I thought that if I was a history major I'd have an easier time of it when I attempted to find a job...hahaha). I was in winterguard for 10 years and I'm still rather obsessed with it. I love watching Sherlock, Doctor Who and Korean dramas. If I didn't have any bills and whatnot I would just travel the world- however if I could choose anyplace to settle down I'd live in London. So that is me in a nutshell!

Last night we had our last full practice before #mycgc championships. These ladies have pushed themselves to be better every practice and I am both amazed and proud of how far they have come in the last year. #winterguard2015 #sewinterguard

At the end of day 2 of crafting with Kristen and Heather. I'm convinced of two things: #winterguard instructors should be able to add 'engineering' as a skill on resumes and that most guard shows are held together by an amazing amount of duct tape.

Nostalgia Merchant

I frequently miss winterguard- for 10 years it was my life and even 7 years after marching I want to be out on the tarp under the hot gymnasium lights, with the music blaring, my heart pounding and equipment in my hand. Over the years my missing guard has become less severe, however this year I started helping coach my old guard and all those desires have come flooding back. Today during the craziness that was championships between getting our girls ready, warmed up and to the performance I had this brief but intense urge to cry and it came with the realization that I will probably never march again. I won't be standing there in the centre of the tarp hoping I remember all the changes made, I will never again stare up at the judges at the top of the bleachers and I won't experience the beauty of getting so wrapped up in a performance that its almost a shock when it's over.

Championships were today and while our girls may not have won, I am so incredibly proud of how far they've come season and I can't wait to see what we'll do together next year!

The Ghosts of World War II by Sergey Larenkov

Taking old World War II photos, Russian photographer Sergey Larenkov carefully photoshops them over more recent shots to make the past come alive. Not only do we get to experience places like Berlin, Prague, and Vienna in ways we could have never imagined, more importantly, we are able to appreciate our shared history in a whole new and unbelievably meaningful way.
