I was once told that the marching arts are a waste of time. I was in a large group at the time and all heads nodded but mine. My hands shook and my heart stuttered as I spoke up. The way you look at the world is in a way of material. You think that if you don’t get an object in return, it is not worth your time. In your defense, it is not your fault. You have been constantly reminded to earn money, own property, and grab as much as you can. To you, experiences are nonexistent. You would rather save a dollar than go on a life changing journey.I’m here to tell you that’s shit.The best things in life are intangible. Life lessons are not as easily grasped as a dollar bill. The countless hours I spend giving it my all while not being paid a cent are worth more than what you make in a very long time. I am proud to say the number I pay to change myself into a beautiful human being that creates beautiful things.At the end of your life, you will not think of how much you made, how much your house was worth, or how worthy your job was. You will think of what you have overcome, of the things you did that you thought were surely impossible. You will think of the little boy who said he wanted to be just like you. You will think of the crowd roaring on its feet as you stab and lock for the final time. I’m sorry for you. I’m sorry you cannot grasp the simple concept of love for things that are mere memories. I’m sorry your life has not challenged you to the point of suffocating in your determination. I’m sorry you can’t see that there are hidden worlds in activities that are pushed aside for kids bashing their skulls together over a ball. I have heard countless reasons as to why I should quit, but I only need one reason as to why I should not. When you are part of a marching arts program, you matter. Whether your experience be zero or 7 years. You matter. Freshman, sophomore, junior, senior. Every person contributes and when one falls it effects the outcome of the whole team. We grow as one. If one person doesn’t give it his all, you can tell. It teaches kids they matter. On this team and in life. That’s amazing. That’s worth my while.
