While it may look like the tree is dying, Bristlecone Pine trees contain both living and dead parts. Damaged areas are sectioned off by the tree in order to save the rest of the tree. This tree can be up to 2,000 years old.

This golden-mantled ground squirrel at Cedar Breaks National Monument in Utah demonstrates an enthusiastic post-nap stretch. In winter, these mammals undergo torpor, a very deep sleep, to conserve energy and survive the bitter cold. Stretching increases flexibility and helps us stay mobile and agile. Cedar Breaks National Monument

We took a long 4th of July roadtrip to go hiking at Cedar Breaks National Monument in Southern Utah. Cedar Breaks is a "natural amphitheater" caused by uplift and erosion of the rocks here over millions of years. The distinct colors were originally different layers of sediment at the bottom of a prehistoric lake. The rim is now over 10,000 feet above sea level, which was really the reason we visited: unlike most closer spots, it wasn't 110 degrees here, and the crowds weren't too bad considering the holiday.
