Geralt was still grinding his teeth when Ciri spoke, barely containing the rage within him and muttering under his breath something along the lines of 'Yen was right about learning too much' "It is. It is very illegal, but you're my entire world, Ciri and I'll break whatever laws I need to if it means protecting you." Geralt didn't feel even the slightest bit of shame, because he had done this to keep her safe and he would do it again. "You can be mad. Be whatever you need to be as long as you're alive." Avallac'h glanced at him and he wasn't mad. He really wasn't. He might do the same thing if he were in Geralt's position, but... he made sure to keep his mouth shut for fear of whatever else might slip out. Ciri probably already thought he was a perv by now. "If it makes you feel any better, Yen was on your side." Of course she'd had quite a few of her choice words for him... as well as reminding him of what they'd been doing at their age. A thought that made him shudder in fatherly terror.
Ciri was rendered speechless at her adoptive father's explanation for doing what he did, unable to bring herself to curse him or reject him for it. If anything, she knew he was doing it with the best intentions to protect her, even if he took drastic measures to do it. She gritted her teeth, facepalming with exasperation.
"I understand, but you can TRUST Avallac'h, father! He's on our side!" The Gryffindor sighed, thinking it was time to tell him the truth. She couldn't bring herself to look back at her best friend yet, but that didn't mean she thought differently of him by any means.
"What the papers say about Avallac'h and I aren't...exactly true. In fact, we set it up this way. Because of everything that has been going on, we thought it best to rely on each other. No one will mess with me and I'd have protection if everyone thought I was dating him, while he can keep his family off his back too."
Finally, Ciri looked up into Avallac'h's eyes, offering him a small smile before glancing back over to her father. "So, see, you and Avallac'h have the same goal: protect me in your own ways. Now apologize and shake hands or I'll tell Yennefer what you've done and you'll never hear the end of it from her."
And she had the nerve to do it if she must.
Avallac'h was a bit surprised that she could even look at him let alone smile at him. He'd been afraid that she was going to think that he was some sort of deprived deviant, unfortunately for him there really was nothing that caught his attention more than the swish of a skirt or a flash of thigh... and when it came to Ciri it was especially prevalent... he really hoped Geralt didn't ask any more questions about that. For both their sakes. "It's fine. Really. He doesn't need to apologize." Avallac'h cut in. "If it were my daughter... I'd have done the same. I'm glad... you have people that love you that much." And perhaps that sentence earned Geralt's respect more than anything else could have, because he visibly eased up. "Really relieved to hear you say that, Ciri. Was worried maybe he'd staged that potions accident. Thought maybe he stole a drop or two to make you fall for him. It would have been my next question." A pause then because out of the corner of his eye Geralt caught the sudden stiffening of Avallac'h's body and met the boy's eyes to find the absolute panic and anxiety there. "You look awfully nervous when I mentioned that. You didn't slip her some, did you?" Avallac'h relaxed just slightly when that was the question posed instead of the one he feared. "No, Geralt. I would never do something like that."

Ah- I'm afraid you're mistaken. I'm a magician. No daggers here.

"SOOOOO... WHAT IF WE KISSED...?" PROMPTS * assorted dialogue for tossing out the idea of being in a relationship or just kissing and seeing what happens after, adjust as necessary
i hear you're a good kisser.
are you staring at my lips?
how about a kiss for old time's sake?
maybe we could experiment a little.
have you ever thought about kissing me?
is there even an "us?"
a little bird told me you're a really good kisser.
could you see me as... more than just a friend?
what's a little fooling around between friends?
i'll admit, i have thought about you like that.
kissing you sounds like a very good idea.
i've been meaning to ask you out for ages.
maybe we could... see what happens.
there's no harm in a little experimentation.
did you want to kiss me back then?
for what it's worth, i really enjoyed the kiss and i wouldn't mind doing that again sometime.
could we pretend this is our first kiss?
maybe we could go on a date sometime.
you could start by coming closer.
just wondering what you taste like.
i saw you looking at me earlier.
could we talk about... us?
i'm not interested in anyone but you.
i bet if we tried, we could make it work.
a kiss won't kill us.
wanna makeout?
quick, kiss me before they walk over here.
i've wanted to kiss you for a long time now.
i never had the courage to ask you if you'd kiss me.
could i keep seeing you after this?
i really enjoyed it, by the way.
you're a much better kisser than i expected.
well, that got out of hand quickly.
maybe we should redo our first kiss.
next time, we should make it a date.
can i kiss you?
kissing sounds really fun right now.
have you been kissed before?
i never liked kissing until you.
you are... unbelievably good at that.
give me a minute to catch my breath.
your heart is racing.
are you okay? you look very flustered.
are my cheeks burning?
figured we're both about to die, so what the hell.
PROMPTS FOR THE MORNING AFTER * adjust as necessary, nsfw implied
this... isn't my bed.
i'll make us breakfast.
wait, how long have you been here?
did you stay the night?
you're so beautiful like this.
did i give you that hickey?
don't get up. stay right here.
kiss me again.
nice bedhead.
are you... wearing anything?
this was a bad idea.
i've wanted to do that forever.
did you enjoy it?
i did a number on your back. sorry about that.
is this your shirt?
maybe you should go.
i had a great time.
if you stay, i'll make us coffee.
i shouldn't have stayed over.
come back here. please?
i've never been like that with anyone before.
there's a bra on the ceiling fan.
did we... actually...?
we could do it again, if you want.
you made me feel... incredible.
was it... okay?
you look beautiful in my bed.
what do you remember?
was i too loud?
you can borrow my shirt.
i guess this makes us more than friends.
this can't be happening.
i could spend the day just like this, right here with you.
is that a hickey?
this was just for fun. it doesn't mean we're together.
this wasn't supposed to happen.
should we talk about it?
what time is it? i'm late for work.
how long have you been awake?
i remember... everything.
we should do that again sometime.
i think we cuddled.
that was the best night of my life.
what parts do you remember?
why don't you stay for breakfast?
was it good for you?
the sex was great.
how do you like your eggs?
are we still friends?
sorry, i've got morning breath.
i'd really like to keep seeing you.
i'm glad i invited you in.
finally... fucking finally.
please don't leave the bed.
don't make fun of me if i walk funny.
this doesn't mean anything.
my friends are never going to believe this.
i don't even know who i was last night.
no one's ever taken care of me like that.
let me help you clean up.
maybe we should forget this even happened.
i'm just going to... leave.
you said some wild things last night.
you're wearing my shirt.
maybe we could make this a regular thing.
am i blushing? i'm blushing, aren't i.
where did i put my glasses?
your clothes are in the living room.
i need a shower.
your hair's a mess.
you make a great pillow.
i thought we agreed this would ruin our relationship.
did i do something wrong?
we were pretty loud.
do you want me to leave?
i asked you to stay the night.
i bet your neighbors hate us.
stay like this.
well, that's one way to bounce back.
what about round two?
don't let go of me.
why don't you join me in the shower?
we can't keep doing this.
we're fucked, aren't we.
how long have i been asleep?
i tried to keep feelings out of this. i really did.
"You haven't offended me. Rather I think that I owe you an apology on behalf of all magicians for those that have misused their power and given you a bad impression." He felt that he may bear some responsibility as magic had come from his kind in the first place. Humans had never been meant to possess it. He met her gaze, like looking into the rich green of an ancient forest until they unsettled him in their likeness to Lara's and he had to look away. Clearing his throat he focused on the window and the world outside. "That's my goal exactly. To teach you how to use magic properly. Forget everything that you've known or been taught about magic before now. Your magic came from us elves. It was gifted to you and I'll be the one to teach it to you properly."
Ciri nodded at his words. "I'm sure I can forgive you. I know not all magic users are evil. In fact, I know some pretty good mages myself too." But if anything, she knew there was one in particular she had to watch out for: Vilgefortz. He knew of her abilities and while she didn't know why he would want anything to do with her, she especially didn't want to find out why.
"I think my mother, Lady Yennefer, would be pretty angry to hear you say that. What little I have learned is from her." Ciri paused, a sad look crossing her eyes, having missed her adoptive parents so much. "But if you say so, then I'll learn from it from the source. Where do we start first, teacher?"
"I of course don't mean it in that way. Your Yennefer is still a human and her understanding is limited to what she has been taught by other humans." He couldn't quite explain it in words, but she would come to understand magic the way the elves did. Just as he opened his mouth to answer a pounding came at the door and he huffed... that woman... "Master elf! It's Millie! The baby is early!" There was a genuine panic in the old woman's voice and he glanced at Ciri briefly. Well... it seemed that her first lesson and getting out of this place would need to be put on hold.
Avallac'h choked on his drink when she said that, because he had honestly expected that she would come clean with Geralt of all people, but it would seem that they were keeping the ruse up here too. "Jaskier told me..." Geralt huffed out. "Of all the people, Ciri. Of all the people it had to be this little git?" Then turning towards Avallac'h the interrogation started. "Does The Hunt have anything to do with those missing girls?" "No...." Avallac'h carefully set his glass down on the table. "Did your father send you here to get close to Ciri? He want your help to get her too?" "No. My father has no interest in school girls." A long pause. Before finally. "How do you feel about Ciri? How do you really feel about her?" "I love Ciri. She's my best friend. She kind, beautiful and... the most brilliant magic user I've ever met." And that was all good and fine, until- "And she has a cracking pair of legs." Avallac'h sputtered the moment the words left his mouth, horrified and paled considerably while Geralt's hand tightened around his glass until it shattered.
"I-I don't know why I-" And then realization. Avallac'h's eyes lowered to his own glass. "You dosed me with Veritaserum..."
"Of course it was Jaskier..." Ciri muttered, crossing her arms, thinking about paying the inn owner a visit later and giving him a talk about this. After that, she sat there quietly, listening to Geralt interrogating Avallac'h the whole time.
She sighed, the fire of irritation within her only building more and more with each pressing and clearly judging question her adoptive father was giving her best friend.
However, once the last of the answers came forth from Avallac'h's mouth, Ciri paused, green eyes wide, wondering if he was just putting on an act or telling the truth. And then, it hit her...
Her cheeks became a bright red, wondering how to process this information. But with the truth literally out, she glared at the person responsible for it happening. "GERALT! Really?! Isn't it illegal to use Veritaserum on students? How could you?!" She was officially angry with him. "We trusted you! I trusted you, but you've...let me down."
Be whatever you need to be as long as you're alive." The house, once a place of warmth and familiarity, now seemed like a gilded cage. His father was dead. Lara was gone. His future had been rewritten without his consent. He was married. The word felt unreal, foreign on his tongue. A wife whose name he barely knew stood where Lara should have been. She had stepped into his life as one steps into an open grave, not out of love, but necessity. He wandered the rooms with a quiet despair, grappling with the strange comfort of being home and the unbearable emptiness of not belonging. Arriving in the Don's office he thought of the trenches, of men who had given up and simply stopped moving, eyes open, breath shallow, waiting for the inevitable. At least they had been honest about their exhaustion. Avallac’h pressed his fingers into the edge of the desk until the wood bit into his skin. He recognized the feeling now with terrifying clarity. That same loosening inside the chest. The way the world dulled at the edges. The temptation to simply… stop. Like the soldiers in the trenches who decided they had already given enough. He opened the desk drawer. Nestled among papers was the gun. Dark metal. Cold. Final. He stared at it. Outside the city bustled on indifferently. Inside the past pressed close. The way the air would go unnaturally still just before the shelling began. That same stillness lived here now.
He didn't pick the gun up. Not yet. He rested his hand on the edge of the drawer and leaned forward, shoulders sagging. He closed his eyes. He thought of how tired they had looked in the trenches. How peaceful, almost. As if they had finally found a place where the noise couldn’t reach them. Slipping into the chair behind the desk he exhaled as he sank into a comfort that felt alien to him. Lifting the gun from the drawer he weighed it in his hand and then placed the cold barrel to his temple before thinking better of it. He lowered it. Tried again, but this time he placed it beneath his chin. This, he thought dimly, should be easy. So why was it so hard?

Awareness returned slowly. The stale smell of cigarettes mixed with damp wood. Water dripped somewhere in the darkness, the slow rhythm echoing through the cavernous building. A sharp, burning ache radiated through his shoulders and down both arms. He opened his eyes -or eye as one was swollen nearly shut- and realized the predicament that he was in. He recalled the truck that had struck them broadside. The impact sounded like a cannon. The steel screaming against steel. The glass exploding through the cabin. Before the car had even stopped sliding across the pavement, other vehicles had boxed them in. He remembered reaching for the revolver under his jacket, but someone had opened what remained of the passenger door and struck him before he could react. Everything after that had gone dark. Now he was here. Alone. Rows of iron hooks disappeared into the darkness overhead, suspended from rails that once carried butchered hogs from one end of the building to the other. The drains cut into the floor carried nothing now except stagnant rainwater and decades of grime. His wrists were lashed tightly together above his head with heavy butcher's rope. His toes barely touched the floor, forcing every muscle in his shoulders and back to bear his weight. Each passing minute sent another dull ache through his arms. His suit jacket had been stripped away, leaving his white shirt stained with blood and sweat. He felt much less like an accountant and a lot more like a hog awaiting the butcher. -and he was, wasn't he?- He wasn't stupid. He knew he was here because he was the Don's Consigliere and that they must want information that they thought he had. Fat chance of that... he'd only just returned from the war and started keeping the Don's books. He didn't know anything that would be useful to anyone... and worse... he doubted anyone was going to believe that... so where did it leave him, exactly? Maybe he had time to figure his way out of this before his captors returned...
