Exploring designs of my version of Graham Jones from Castlevania Aria of Sorrow for my revamping of my AU Dramaturgy, but he's soooo different atp I'll rename him entirely and label him as an OC LOL, but anywayssss~
This human guy is a charming smooth talker who, to no surprise, is a manipulative capitalist man. He comes from a stupidly rich family that runs Nagano, Japan. Different family members survey different sections from law to entertainment, with Graham having a grip on the education department. Fun fact, the family is also cannibals to mimic the likeness of vampires as they are utterly devoted to the "idea of vampirism" without actually committing to being vampires (vampirism as capitalism/life sucking force, but vampirism also can be considered outsiders depending on the context, and they don't want to deal with that part in anyway shape, or form, which will be a nice contrast to the actual vampires)
I still wanted to give that "elegant charm," so I ended up turning towards 1980s-1990s fashion illustration and photography. This also led me to explore how fashion incorporates fascist/military clothing post world war 2!
The yap has been brought to you by the fact that a reviewer saw my design of Graham and wanted to see the exploration and process of it, so I kind of want to just revamp him to really fit the story being tolddd because i think he would genuinely be fun to board sometime in the future~
Juste talks about “Ruthven”, which I’m going to blindly presume is Juste’s “Dracula”, so I tried to mockup a Ruthven design but it’s ending up being a lot more then I realised haha. I’ll leave this here for now but I’ll just spit ball so when I come back it’ll all be here
The book The Vampyre, published in 1819, is considered the first vampire books in English literature, with Lord Ruthven as our vampire. It depicts the building blocks such as aristocracy, charm, and other vampire traits that would also later appear in Carmila and popularised in Dracula.
I wanted to perceive him as otherworldly and a major contrast to not only Juste, but Maxim and Lydie as those designs ended up leaning towards lower class and servant vibes.
This would end up into mostly four different pathways I went:
- Tudor(ish) and Greek(ish) clothing to make appearance older/unlike Dracula
- References to the first animated feature film Snow White as an ode to the first vampire in literature
- References to theatre, in what is considered the “first” depiction of a pact with the devil with Doctor Faustus. Thus costuming and designs surrounding Mephistopheles, the devil’s henchmen (Maxim, Juste’s friend, gets possessed so I feel like this goes nicely in hand)
- References to the fashion of the 1800s when the book was published. Also having a vague lean towards Lord Byron, who Ruthven was based off
Somehow the costuming for Mephistopheles is not only just really cool, but can encompass all of the pathways I’ve covered since I can still go for a 1800s costuming, even 1930s due to Snow White, because it’s a lens of the older eras. I ended up mish mashing a lot of the styles to get somewhere.

I’m having alot of fun with the more theatrical costume look, I still want to challenge myself to do a “Castlevania” look which ends up being a lot more modern, especially the vampires so I’ll probably end up doing two versions.
Mizrak meeting drac uh oh
This is a kinda "whatever" animatic, but the small things I did with intentionality were all window-based and made the characters never actually really connect/share the same space. You can see I also tried to keep this under 3 minutes, and i struggled really badly doing that so lessons were definitely learnt 😅
also ty to Lux for being my cheerleader for this, and revising the script!
eternal nocturne
Please write your story. Draw the artwork. Finish the animation. Continue on whatever project you're working on. It doesn't matter if you're not good at it, or you have doubts, or you're afraid of mistakes. Your creation has a right to exist, and it will be important to others.

Hi MysteryAnimator! I hope you’re having a good day and if not, you have my condolences!
As a fellow visual storyteller — although I study filmmaking rather than animation — I really love your breakdowns of several scenes and characters from Castlevania: Nocturne, although you’ve already heard me say this. One thing that I’d like to bring up just because I want is how the relationship between Maria Renard and Abbot Emmanuel has a lot of interesting parallels with the relationship between Alucard and Dracula.
How, you ask? Well, while Alucard and Dracula are presented as opposites, they are also very similar as well. Alucard (especially in the original Castlevania series, maybe not so much in Nocturne) would probably not want to admit that he has any similarities to his father, he does. They’re both very black-and-white, very strong-minded, stubborn (e.i., once he sets his mind to something it’s hard for him to see another way), he’s exceptionally rigid, he enjoys combat, and he also has a lot of bravado and likes to show the power that he commands.
Similarly, Maria and her father, Emmanuel, both have a lot of these traits as well. They are also very black-and-white, strong-minded and stubborn. This is most evident when they are arguing with each other and when they’re preaching their political beliefs.
Here are some examples as to how they’re similar:
Castlevania:
Dracula: THERE ARE NO INNOCENTS! Not anymore! Any one of them could have stood up and said, “No, we won’t behave like animals anymore.””
Alucard: I won’t let you do it. I grieve with you, but I won’t let you commit genocide.
Notes: There is no nuance in either of their decisions, and by making this a direct confrontation, it only makes both of them more ardent in their beliefs. A better method that might have had more success in convincing Dracula would have been to see the world through his eyes and then tried to convince him via logic and reason. This might have made Dracula less ardent but I’m not sure if it would have completely worked.
Castlevania: Nocturne:
Abbot Emmanuel: The barbarians are at the gate. To them, no will be true enough or loyal enough. They will drench us all in blood.
—
Maria: The revolution, which I support with all my heart, has declared you its bitter enemy.
Notes: Very similarly, there’s no nuance in their decisions either and they also butt heads and become more ardent in their beliefs. Additionally, in season 2, Maria acts rather similarly to Dracula in that she’s in so much emotional pain from losing Tera that she becomes more ardent in beliefs and turns to more extreme methods, just as revolution itself does in the current timeline. (I’ve studied the history of the French Revolution since watching the show.)
If you want, let me know what you think of this.
Thank you!
Ah! Sorry for responding so late, I did see this, but I forgot to respond, but i loveeeeeeeeee this.
Honestly, I have nothing else to add, especially with the examples you brought up, because they are really similar, and it will be really interesting to see how it develops further, as Alucard is going to be witnessing this cycle again. As he has with Richter and the Belmonts, he will now have to turn towards Maria and watch history repeat.
got inspired by some character layouts on my tl, so instead of actually rough boarding the whole thing first, I attempted layouts of two thumbnail sketches PFFT
the whole thing is in my brain, but also isnt so I'm struggling to actually put it down on paper and make it narratively cohesive, except for these two sections but trust i will make this happen lmao
lmao I want to do layout and maybe colour script (?) for a silly animatic so quick wip of nocturne drac

ended up doing a clean doodle of story beat for animatic maybe?
idk why mizrak being pushed into a wall and choked has been a consistent thing but yk sure
(related to this lol)
nocturne beam
nocturnes your lisa and dracula (aged up drac to be align with nocturne alucard + symphony of the night)
i just think it would be funny for fledgling Mizrak (or anyone tbh) to sense danger, think this is juste, call out to juste, only to hear a voice out of the shadows go "Belmont? You think, I am a Belmont?" HASBDHADS might turn into animatic when have time?
colorscripts for for this entire animatic wowie
no idea if i did this correctly but it was really fun to actually getting to try to do this and adding weight to the visual choices I made yonder agos (the pun is intended), even on a crunch lol
im going to nerd out about the colour associations (I would make a graphic but im a tiny bit busy boo)
Mizrak, Maria AND past lover (the candle) are associated with vivid bright pink/red to link them together and begin to associate them with unbridled passion
The purple is used to allude to the type of conversation being had, as Juste and Maria are in a more blue violet setting, thus enhancing the much colder convo. Mizrox are in a more red violet place + have additional lighting + is supported by a window (can mean reflection)
When Olrox begins to panic/get in his own head, the orange warm colours begin to fade out, and Mizrak is the one who begins to reintroduce it
Despite Maria covering up Tera's pendant, her tears end up being practically the same colour as her pendant
though is on me for it being so subtle, and i realise now i could've pushed it further but oh wellz you learn for the future
