Trigger warnings: pregnancy mention, premature birth, cheating,
From the moment she was born, Nimah has been able to have access to anything that she desired. Whatever she wanted, she got. It was as simple as that. Want a pony? Nimah got one at seven. Want to fly Greece for the weekend? She’s been able to do that for her thirteenth birthday. Nimah also had the most packed after school activities, which also gave her the chance to learn whatever she wanted: languages, fencing, skiing lessons, acting, voice lessons, all kinds of other sports. Nimah was more spoiled than the average household child.
At the age of fifteen, Nimah had already thought over the question one million times: What is considered a normal childhood? A white picket fence, the perfect family dog, loving parents and a stable household income to keep everyone’s heads above water, is what most people would say. Nimah would agree with you, though, she had that life on a much grander scale. Being born to Michael and Dominique Turner was a privilege beyond belief. From an early age, Nimah was able to understand that her parents would and could give her anything she desired.
After the Turner’s had Marcus, it wasn’t until two years later and finally falling into the routine of having a toddler in their terrible twos, Dominique was beginning to feel ill. She didn’t think much of it until a coworker suggested pregnancy. Later that day, after dinner and when their son was asleep, Dominique took a pregnancy test - or several - that confirmed she was in fact pregnant. Michael and Dominique took great precautions during the pregnancy with the warnings of possibly losing the baby. Again, the parent never gave up hope. Nimah was born two months early with underdeveloped lungs.
Just because she had breathing complications didn’t make Nimah any less energetic than the rest of the kids in her class. In fact, she was even more so because of the number of teachers who tried to coddle her and tell her to not run around in the humid New York smog. Because of her continued defiance, Nimah was known as a bit of a rebel in her classes. This caused her to gain friends, but it was also because of her name, and her parents, that brought along a lot of fake friendships. Fame comes with a lot of perks. Going to amazing places, meeting fascinating people, attending fabulous parties, and eating sublime food and doing it in style - on private jets, huge yachts, and beautiful cars. Yet, Nimah knew that fame also had its downside. Because of these fake friendships, her life had become hollow and lonely.
People were always in awe of Nimah and her older brother, Marcus, despite never accomplishing anything huge themselves. It was also difficult for Nimah when all she wanted to do was have a quiet walk with her family, then in a split-second having people all up in their business, taking photos.
While many families kept status through secrets, gossip, and knowledge, her family did so for ages on the influence of sheer power or manipulation. Nimah’s branch of kin were the model of upper-class culture, smiling and gracious while also shyly cunning and elitist. Nimah’s family set the standard for what it meant to be a business socialite, achieving prominent celebrity status. Then, there was the all-consuming pressure of being a child born into such extravagant wealth and the pride the comes with succeeding. Nimah is constantly reminded how successful and great her parents are. Your parents did this. Your parents accomplished this. They gave you this, so you better do well. And she hasn’t. Nimah knows she’s falling short.
And then Marcus fucked-up everything. Or so the headlines say. For months, Marcus had been dehumanized in the papers for cheating on his wife. The Turner’s turned their back on Marcus – Except for Nimah. There might be an age gap between the siblings, but Nimah knows her brother, but although she always felt like there was more to the story, she never voiced her opinions, scared that her parents would look at her with the same disappointment.
Marcus decided to permanently escape the golden cage the siblings had been born into. A bitterness seeps into Nimah, wishing she could take hold of that same freedom, but Nimah came to realize that sometime your work is what keeps you sane — somewhere to go that wasn’t home, especially as Nimah didn’t have anyone specifically she could trust who was present. With Marcus away, it felt like he was making Nimah take the brunt of their parents unwanted attention and it felt suffocating.
So, Nimah began spending most, if not all, of her nights away from the Turner household. Festivals, theaters, cinemas, carnivals, and restaurants. Nimah spent her nights roaming around the city, meeting new people and high places and low. That’s why when Nimah and Marcus’ ex-wife ended up at the same speak easy, she’s able to shake it off because the fact that it was by pure coincidence was very high. Now, Nimah has always been very skillful in keeping her hands clean when it comes to drama. For some reason, possibly because of her seemingly kind nature, people automatically overlook Nimah whenever shit hit’s the ceiling. That’s probably why when she overhears Marcus’ ex-wife bragging to a friend that she was able to frame Marcus and take half of everything he has, Nimah doesn’t think twice when it comes to ruining the woman's life. Completely and utterly obliterated her name and everything she had accomplished in New York, eventually running the woman back to her parents in Long Island.
Nimah doesn’t remember when she came up with the idea of escaping her New York home to Mystic. It could have been the night she was on ecstasy or another day where she spent the whole afternoon in her room smoking up, maybe while her parents were away on a week's trip to a private coast somewhere in California. Whenever the idea came to her, Nimah packed up her room the twenty-four hours later and fled, only to show up on her estranged brother's doorstep without letting him know.
