Show, Don’t Tell
An analysis of how Riku is shown as the light in the darkness for Sora in kh3, unrealized by Sora (yet) due to confusion over his own feelings and preconceived expectations.
The most important clue, the real clincher: The fact that they put a literal light in Riku’s place during the segment of the Dive to the heart that is a 1:1, shot for shot parallel of the kh1 opening:
An important difference here though, is at the end of the sequence, Riku’s light isn’t underwater like Riku is in the KH1 op- instead the light is above the water, symbolizing that Riku overcame the darkness he fell to in KH1:
(Hence why he can be Sora’s light now. Remember, Sora is shown blinded by Riku’s light in kh1 before he falls to darkness)
Then we come to Riku’s sacrifice. Earlier we had Mickey telling Riku, “Sometimes you care for somebody so much, that other feelings disappear. And then there’s no room for fear or doubt.”, and now we see this in practice, and who that “somebody” is, conclusively. It’s framed as one of the most significant moments in the game: the slow motion as Riku calmly walks away from Sora, all sound fading away except for Riku taking a breath before he puts his entire being into protecting Sora from the demon tide. The force of the heartless creates a literal tunnel of darkness around them, with Riku as the light in the center.
They absolutely did not have to make the visuals like this. They could have had Riku cast a reflect shield around himself and Sora until the heartless broke through it like glass- similar to how Vanitas tried breaking Aqua’s shield during her fight. But instead, they made sure Riku was a singular point of light in a tunnel of darkness as he protects Sora with everything he has.
Not only are the visual similarities clear, also take notice of the repeated compositions between the two scenes, many shots paralleled right to the end, with Sora reaching out to Riku.
I should also mention here that when Sora calls out to Riku in the tunnel and says “Riku! Answer me!”, the light starts making an odd sound as though it IS anwering him, and Sora gets a look on his face that makes it seem as though he’s having a revelation- or is on the cusp of one:
And when Sora reaches the other side of the light, where else does it lead, but straight to Riku. As if that wasn’t strong enough a hint on its own, Sora finds him floating atop a sacrificial tripod that seems to be a reference to the Delphic Tripod of Greek myth, which was used to deliver prophecies of Apollo, god of Sun and Light.
It’s an important point that the light only leads Sora to Riku. Through the rest of the sequence Sora is led through dark portals created by the lich.
After this, we get to another tunnel scene, which is hugely important but has been controversial to say the least. In order to not make this post a mile longer and keep anything that can be misconstrued negatively off of this one, I’ll go through that scene in the next part.
Riku’s heart being placed in Olympus is already eyebrow raising, considering the VERY pointed dialogue in that world, but more than that- Riku wasn’t put just anywhere. He was placed in the Realm of the Gods.
And unlike the other hearts Sora rescued in this sequence, Riku is placed in a visually and symbolically significant location. It turns out the structure he’s floating above is most likely a sacrificial tripod. The Delphic Tripod to be specific.
The Delphic Tripod is famous in Greek myth. It belonged to Apollo, the god of Sun and Light, and used by a priestess to deliver oracles of Apollo. Prophecies, in other words. In the myths, Hercules attempted to steal the Tripod, but was stopped by Apollo and Zeus (hence the sun and lightning symbols in the game’s version).
It seems a little on the nose that Riku would be put over a sacrificial tripod of the god of Light, after he had just sacrificed himself for Sora- his light, and also acted as Sora’s light to lead him here…

Let’s dance, our heartbeats
becoming one
This scene takes my breath away.
Riku has always been my favourite KH character. He’s grown so much over the years, and KH3 really shows us how he’s grown into his newfound strength. But one thing has not changed and KH3 all but spells it out for us: Riku wants this strength to protect what (or should we say who) matters most. He’s not afraid anymore. It is, and always will be, Sora that Riku is fighting for.
And all of that comes together in this breathtaking and heartbreaking scene. When Sora breaks down, Riku rushes over to him. When Sora cries, Riku longs to reach out and touch him, comfort him, protect him, and he actually reaches out to touch Sora, but he pulls his hand back. That single small gesture broke my heart. Riku’s feelings are so clear on his face, in his actions, but he can’t console Sora with a touch, though he wants to, he wants to so badly. Sora, lost in his grieve, oblivious to Riku’s inner conflict. Riku, then, determined, doing what he knows, what he’s always done, always will do, protect Sora. He balls his fist instead, stands. He walks right up to the Demon Tower, no hesitation, and puts every single fibre of his being into protecting Sora. That’s true love. And it was shown here, so beautifully.
While Sora jumping into the Realm of Darkness was amazing, this scene right here gave me all of the Soriku feels and broke my heart ten times over.
Remember when Sora’s and Riku’s hearts were so in tune that they created a love song together and Mickey shipped them harder than any of us?
Mickey: That was amazing! What happened?
Riku: Sora…
Mickey: Sora? Funny. Just hearing that name kinda makes me wanna smile.
Riku: Yeah. That’s how he is.
Mickey: Whaddaya know? Riku and Sora. The Sound Ideas you two set free, joined together. And when they did, they made a great and powerful harmony.
Riku: Sora can find the brightest part of anything. And pull off miracles like there’s nothing to it. It’s pretty hard not to smile around him.
Mickey: Wow. No wonder the music sounded like so much fun. But I bet he’s got you to thank for that. Having such a good friend means he could really enjoy it.
Riku: Huh?
Mickey: It’s like each of you is holding onto a little part of the other. Your hearts are always in tune, so they’re free to sing!

My take on if Shiro saved Keith! Open for better quality!
Helllooooo I made a Keith shimeji cuz I remembered that was a thing,,,anywhooo
DOWNLOAD
Misc info: - Shimejis are little desktop buddies that run around and do stuff on your screen. Only for Windows. Copyright © 2009 Yuki Yamada However, the customized art of Keith was by me.
- Use the exe file, if that doesn’t work, the jar file is next best alternative. Batch file works too but the command prompt needs to be open, which is annoying.
- If he throws your window off screen, right click on him and select “Restore IE” to bring the window back
-Basically right clicking on him will give you a lot of options so yeah. DON’T use the images for any other purposes(commercial or not); they’re meant to be a shimeji
DON’T link the download link elsewhere either, if you wanna share link this post
