the battle in sinclair's head had instantly been replaced by something else in river's presence, something....comforting, as if she...she was that soft place to land they never knew they'd been looking for their whole life. as if she is the only one who understood this pain, who knew how to take it away. it was as if she was...shadow?

before the name could even leave their lips, theirs was said in return by the other, and the worry in her expression brings a feeling of concern for them, along with it was confusion, coming with the terms of she and the feline who knew how to take it all away, as they would always say whenever she has them hold her. the assumption quickly cements into the truth though, as they've quickly processed just how she's said their name. they didn't want to acknowledge it yet, as they want to question it. ask her.

"stop." sinclair clears their throat, before continuing, hoping she does turn back around to look at them. "we've not...we've not talked...how do you—how do you know my name, know me?"

               suddenly,  the  only  thing  river  desires  is  being  allowed  to  make  a  wish  and  be  consumed  by  the  earth,  or  maybe  disappear  in  a  cloud  of  smoke  as  they  so  often  do  when  they’re  so  wrongly  portrayed  in  media.  suddenly,  anything  is  a  better  option  than  what  she  has  right  now  —  sinclair  calling  for  her  with  confusion  in  their  voice,  yet  there  is  something  akin  to  heartbreaking  hope  too,  and  an  underlying  calm  river  knows  it  is  because  of  her,  because  of  what  she  did.  she  doesn’t  turn  around  for  a  long  moment,  feet  once  again  glued  to  the  ground,  and  a  hard  swallow  passes  down  her  throat  the  moment  she  realizes  lying  to  sinclar  is  not  an  option,  that  the  single  thought  makes  her  more  nauseous  than  the  idea  of  sinclair  being  mad  at  her,  of  them  hating  her.  she  simply  can’t,  so  when  she  does  turn,  sorrow  is  engraved  on  her  features’  every  line.     “  would  you—  would  you  believe  me  if  i  say  i—  i  heard  it  from  someone  calling  you  to  get  your  order  at  ivory ?  ”     her  voice  is  soft  and  trembling  by  the  time  she  speaks,  and  her  smile,  pained  and  regretful,  wavers  upon  her  lips.     “  i—  i  think  you  know…  why  i  know  your  name.  ”  river  finally  recognizes  as  her  breathing  stops  to  swallow  a  sob.

           her  cup  of  tea  sits  unfinished  while  her  attention  is  solely  focused  on  her  phone  .  a  small  frown  mars  her  features  .  it’s  not  until  river  takes  a  seat  across  from  her  that  freya  looks  up  .  “  can’t  it  be  both  ?  ”  she’ll  deadpan  .  nonetheless  ,  she  reaches  for  the  teapot  to  fill  up  the  remainder  of  her  cup  .  “  what  i  will  say  is  that  this  town  just  can’t  seem  to  catch  a  break  .  who  knew  such  a  small  town  would  be  rife  with  scandal  ?  ”  she’ll  grasp  the  handle  of  the  teacup  ,  bringing  it  up  to  her  lips  to  take  a  rather  lengthy  sip  .  “  why  do  you  ask  ?  has  the  paper  tasked  you  with  getting  a  quote  ?  if  so  …  no  comment  .  ”

               freya’s  answer  elicits  a  chuckle,  deep  and  full  of  enough  delight  to  make  her  eyes  twinkle.  as  the  weight  of  her  body  rests  completely  against  the  back  of  the  chair,  river  observes  her  refill  her  cup  of  tea,  the  amusement  in  her  features  quickly  replaced  by  an  offended  scowl.     “  ew,  no,  i  am  not  a  journalist,  freya,  i’m  a  photographer.  we’re  not  running  around  town  getting  our  nose  in  businesses  that  aren’t  ours.  ”     mostly,  at  least.  sometimes  she  did  have  to  fight  some  forcefully  established  limits  to  get  the  right  shot,  however,  it  didn’t  happen  often.     “  but  yeah,  i’m  sorry  we’re  giving  you  such  a  hard  time.  although  …  considering  you’ve  been  here  for  a  year,  why  aren’t  you  accustomed  to  it  already ?

so it was on tuesday then! tabitha smiled to herself, her time had not been wasted after all! - “ that’s perfect actually! you caught me just in time. ” - the thought of getting mad at her didn’t even cross her mind. she finally had an answer to what had been bugging her for days!

if anything, she felt giddy. tattooing was her favorite thing. - “ can you please remind me what you want tattooed? i know i have the sketch somewhere but i cannot recall which one it is. ” - she sat back down and took out her current sketchbook - “ here, sit next to me. ”

it was said absentmindedly, but it felt… odd. her words felt heavy in a way, like she had talked with a mouthful of honey. ughhh, why does that keep happening. - “ so, your tattoo ” - okay, seems to be back to normal. everything is fine tabitha, must be a side effect from... that thing. probably connected to the gills! the mermaid topic still made her uneasy, so she always maturely decided to ignore it and hope she was right. ( she was not ). - “ my mind is saying it was nature-themed but i could be fully wrong. ”

               there  is  relief  at  first,  when  tabitha  answers,  when  she  doesn’t  seem  at  all  irritated  in  the  face  of  her  …  slip.  then  there’s  something  else,  as  she  drops  her  bag  on  a  nearby  couch  along  with  her  plaid  shirt  and  gets  ready  to  answer  the  question.  it  is  strong,  stronger  than  her  and  her  magic  that  immediately  vibrates  to  protect  her  as  she  is  beckoned  to  the  tattoo  artist.  it  isn’t  fruitful,  however,  her  magic’s  attempts   —   she  obeys  like  a  marionette  and  finds  herself  sitting  on  the  spot  right  by  tabitha’s  side  in  the  blink  of  an  eye.     “  whoa,  wait,  i  was  gonna  sit  anyway,  you  didn’t  have  to  use  your  special  thing  or  anything.  ”     river  jokes,  a  nervous  habit,  a  some - weird - shit - is - happening  coping  mechanism.  she’s  quickly  distracted  by  a  new  question,  though,  and  her  attention  is  brought  to  the  thing  that’s  been  getting  her  excited  for  the  past  two  weeks.     “  oh,  right !   yes.  it’s  the  ivy  net  i  asked  to  get  on  my  back.  ”     she  had  been  torn  between  getting  it  on  her  back  or  to  fill  the  spaces  between  the  tattoos  on  her  arms,  but  the  desire  to  start  occupying  other  parts  of  her  body  with  inked  art  had  won.     “  i  got  the  idea  a  while  ago,  but  wasn’t  feeling  brave  enough  until,  well,  that  day  i  booked  the  appointment.  ”

⁽ ⠀ ✶ ⠀ ⁾ ⠀ ⠀ — ⠀ ⠀ a negative state of emotion can never last long when river is nearby.  yejide can't help but mirror the beaming smile that she receives,  cheeks hurting a bit at the effort.  when did they become so sad and how can they blame this on vampirism?  it's become this month's excuse for everything;  they were willing to run it into the ground if given the chance.

          "you've seen tv,  you know what chest compressions are even if you don't know how to do them right."     yejide doesn't wait for much more confirmation as they wrap their fingers around river's elbow and gently tug them over to the mannequin.  they make a show of cracking their knuckles before demonstrating the correct hand position on the dummy's chest,  one hand over the other,  fingers interlaced.     "try doing that  —  no compressions,  just positioning for now.  and don't kill me,"—funny how even little phrases like that feel weird when she's already experienced death—"but i've never seen the office."

               two  things  are  true  in  her  current  scenario:  one,  she  had  lied  (  of  course  she  knows  what  compressions  are  ),  and  two,  jeyide  is  right.  but  that,  considering  it  was  often  the  case  with  them,  is  not  truly  a  surprise.  hence,  she  allows  herself  to  be  guided,  smiles  amusedly  when  yejide  cracks  his  knuckles,  pays  the  utmost  attention  to  the  instructions  with  a  furrowed  brow—  she  can  do  this,  she’s  good  at  learning,  and  hey,  she  doesn’t  have  to  practice  on  another  human,  yay !   or  at  least,  that’s  what  she  tells  herself  when  she  starts  getting  nervous  as  her  knees  touch  the  ground  and  her  hands  the  dummy.

               “  wait,  what ?  ”     her  head  snaps  to  yejide  then,  interlaced  hands  hovering  over  the  mannequin’s  chest,  eyes  bigger  than  usual.     “  man,  i  haven’t  watched  the  office  either,  but  i  know  the  episode,  it’s  iconic !  ”     stayin’  alive  was  definitely  going  to  play  in  her  head  the  moment  she  starts  the  compressions  part.     “  but  if  that’s  true,  we’re  so  changing  it  after  this.  now,  am  i  doing  it  right  or  am  i  dumber  than  this  dummy?  ”

There was an excited grin seeing his favorite (feline? Feline human? Reed made a mental note to ask next time). Reed let out a snort feeling relieved that it was River interupting him. There was a sigh of relief.

"River Jenkins you are a hero bearhold needs." He said in an expasperated but very grateful tone. Truthfully he was really bad at this blind date stuff. "Deal." He said standing up quickly. Reed took out a sticky note and ten dollar bill, despite not ordering.

               the  slight  exasperation  in  his  tone  makes  her  chuckle,  a  bit  of  arrogance  in  the  casual  shrug  that  moves  her  shoulders.     “  honestly,  i  am  a  hero,  rescuing  poor  knights  in  danger  of  humiliation  or  boredom.  or  both.  ”     pleased  with  his  agreement,  river  claps  her  hands  enthusiastically  and  lets  out  a  small  shriek  that  attracts  the  attention  of  a  few  commensals,  something  she  couldn’t  care  less  about.  then,  as  she  reads  the  note  he  leaves,  a  soft  smile  grazes  her  countenance  because,  despite  how  amused  his  galantry  makes  her,  the  act  also  warms  her  heart.     “  i  do  have  a  gps,  yes,  ”     she  replies  immediately,  walking  out  of  the  restaurant.     “  but  i  don’t  think  we’ll  need  it   —   i  know  the  way  by  heart.  ”

Nova had a a happy but tired look on her face. "Thank you so much I owe you big time time." Nova said as she clasped her hands together.Nova nodded. "Go ahead by all means." Nova said getting out of her way." She looked at River. "Should I pose in front of anything?" She asked offering to be one of the objects.

               river  shrugs,  not  disinterested  but  relaxed.     “  it’s  okay,  it  was  nothing,  really.  ”     she  replies,  nodding  with  a  smile  at  nova’s  approval.  she  moves  to  a  wall  then,  ready  to  be  silent  and  unnoticeable  as  both  do  their  respective  jobs.     “  no,  posing  it’s  not  necessary.  just  do  whatever  you  have  to  do  and  i’ll  take  natural  photos  of  this  lecture.  ”

marisela  wrapped  her  cardigan  tighter  around  her  body  as the  cool  evening  air  nipped  at  her  skin. “sombra!”  she  called  out  in  frustration  from  her  front  porch.  her  black  cat  had   slipped  out  earlier,  and  she’d  been  combing  the  neighborhood  for  any  sign  of  her.  a  few  minutes  passed  when  she  spotted  a  familiar  set  of  glowing eyes  peeking  out  from  behind  a  bush.  marisela  knelt  down,  whispering  coaxing  words,  her  moves slow  and  deliberate  before  she  quickly  scooped  up  the  small,  sleek  form.  “gotcha,  you  little  sneak!”  marisela  muttered,  rising  back  to  her  feet  and  heading  back  inside  the  house.  once  indoors,  marisela  set  the  cat  down  gently,  closing  the door  and  locking  it  with  a  soft  click.  “what  were  you  thinking  running  off  like  that?  you  could’ve  gotten  hurt!”  marisela  scolded  lightly,  her  tone  warm  but  firm  as  she  knelt  down  to  scratch  sombra  behind  the  ears.  she  rose  and  turned  back  to  the  kitchen,  calling  out  as  she  went “come on, let’s get you some dinner.”

               the  experiences  river  has  had  in  her  cat  form  have  always  been  worth  to  tell  (  or  at  least,  most  of  them  )   —   she  often  scares  superstitious  people  when  she  crosses  them,  is  able  to  sleep  in  the  stranges  but  also  the  most  beautiful  places,  listening  to  conversations  that  don’t  concern  her,  and  the  list  goes  on.  however,  this  is  a  first.  being  taken  in  soft  arms  and  led  into  an  strange  house  is  something  that  has  never  happened  before  (  apparently,  her  and  a  cat  called  sombra  are  very  alike  ),  so  she  waits  until  she’s  on  the  floor  and  the  woman  turns  around  to  go  back  to  her  human  form.  only  a  soft  woosh  gives  away  her  transformation.     “  sombra  is  already  home,  sleeping  in  the  closet,  ”     she  informes,  unbothered,  and  unceremoniously  flops  down  on  the  couch.     “  but  if  that  food  isn’t  cat  food,  i’ll  gladly  accept  it.  ”

She blinked a couple of times as the words that were said finally, albeit slowly, started to register with her. "No no, tell me about this guy," she pushed with a smile - more than happy to hear about other's blabberings about life and all that fun stuff. "No, it's okay, I'll survive," she reassured her, "I've been through worse. What happened with this guy though?"

               river  shakes  her  head,  her  soft  smile  still  perched  on  her  features,  whatever  she  was  talking  about  was  of  no  importance,  not  in  the  face  of  mavi’s  unease.     “  well,  i  just  ended  up  punching  him  and  they  kicked  me  out  of  the  bar.  ”     she  shrugs,  giving  little  importance  to  the  event.  there  was  a  more  pressing  matter  to  approach.     “  but  look,  it  doesn’t  matter.  you  know  …  it’s  okay  if  you  don’t  wanna  talk  about  it,  but  …  you  have  to  know  i’m  here  if  you  do  because  i  just—  i  can  feel  you’re  not  okay.  ”

           call  it  intuition  but  it  came  to  her  as  no  surprise  when  the  door  swings  open  to  reveal  not  only  one  but  two  black  cats  .  emiko  shuts  the  door  and  quickly  bends  down  to  pet  nori  ,  giving  her  cat  a  couple  scratches  behind  his  ears  .  she  then  lets  her  gaze  wander  back  to  the  other  cat  and  stands  up  straight  .  a  look  of  pure  amusement  encompasses  the  witch’s  features  as  she  watches  her  best  friend  revert  from  feline  to  human  .  “  and  a  good  afternoon  ,  ”  she’ll  stand  and  mock-curtsey  .  “  i’m  glad  you  two  had  a  wonderful  time  .  get  up  to  any  mischief  ?  ”  she  jests  ,  plopping  down  on  the  couch  .  “  nothing  crazy  for  me  .  same  old  ,  same  old  .  just  at  the  back  of  the  library  hoping  i  stumble  upon  some  cool  undiscovered  artifact  that  holds  the  town’s  secrets  .  ”

               a  smirk  crosses  river’s  face  at  her  friend’s  amusement,  knowing  perfectly  that  it’s  her  shenanigans  with  nori  that  provoked  it.  it  makes  her  feel  giddy  inside.     “  no  mischief  today,  we  behaved.  ”     she  replies  cheekily.     “  we  were  talking  and  napping,  she  told  me  the  new  tuna  you  bought  her  the  other  day  was  good,  she  prefers  that  one  now.  ”     her  smirk  appears  again  because  it’s  always  funny  the  type  of  things  she  gets  from  animals  when  she’s  able  to  talk  to  them  in  her  cat  form.  at  emiko’s  summary  of  her  day,  she  shifts  on  the  couch,  and  taps  the  spot  by  her  side  in  a  silent  invitation.     “  and ?  did  you  find  something  worthy ?  ”

river was a familiar face that sinclair have seen in town here and there, and every single time she catches their eye for some reason, a feeling they cannot determine, in the two hundred years of their existence, still cannot figure out why. yet they've always put a veil on their curiosity, not wanting to scare her off. they've always settled with the fact that perhaps...it was just some familiarity she shares with someone, something that is now long forgotten except the feeling that it brings, that's how sinclair has at least convinced themself with. yet now, being alone with her, especially in the state they're in, they've wished it was a different circumstance, not wanting to frighten her with it. but... "no, you're alright, love." they reassure her, forcing a small smile, that quickly goes away as their shoulder slumps down. "is there—is there anything i can assist you with?" they gulp, hoping that it helps their case, yet it was something they're struggling to hide now.

               her  magic  thrums  inside  her,  and  simmers  like  lava  from  an  active  volcano.  she  can  feel  how  sinclair  is  struggling  with  something,  how  the  shadows  of  darkness  envelope  their  soul  and  it’s  unavoidable,  the  moment  the  pet  name  falls  from  their  lips  (  “ love,  love,  love ”  ),  her  magic  flows  and  her  internal  purring  awakes,  silent  to  others,  but  she  can  feel  it  between  her  ribs  regardless.     “  shit,  no,  no  i—  i  don’t  need  anything.  ”     it  stops,  then,  fast  and  painful,  like  severing  a  limb  in  cold  blood.  river  has  to  use  all  her  strength  to  not  react  to  it.  she  backtracks,  walking  slowly.     “  i’m  sorry,  i  didn’t  mean  to—  i—  i  should  go.  i’m  so  sorry,  sinclair.  ”     and  that  was  her  second  mistake  —  they  have  never  crossed  a  single  word,  how  could  she  know  their  name ?   fucking  idiot,  river  huffed,  feeling  warmth  rise  to  her  cheeks  as  she  turned  around  intending  to  leave  the  place  as  soon  as  possible.

idle fingers traced at the blushed petals lining its lengthy stem, tracing the heart-shaped outlines of its flowers. a feat of nature, surely proof of souls resting more than just within mankind, but in the brush, too. manon figured they might as well get out today, as local weather reporters forecasted an upcoming autumn gloom approaching the upper quadrant of washington state — nothing foreign, nor unexpected, yet still it invoked a deep, internal sigh within them. the turning of the season brought out a new side of manon, perhaps its newness prompted a sense of urgency, pecking at their brain to seek the comfort only soothed by the warmth of companionship before everyone turned to reclusion, so as to not constantly shovel snow from the pavement. " bleeding heart. " they muttered, half to themselves, half to the person now caught in the crossfire of her attention. " — the flowers. they're - they're called that. colloquially, at least. there's a story about how they first bloomed. such a sad story about something so beautiful. " a shrug.                reverence  for  nature  from  people  was  something  that  river  jenkins  appreciated  profoundly,  enough  to  ignite  in  her  a  special  kind  of  respect.  because  people  often  wasn’t  considerate  with  the  gorgeous  environment  that  surrounded  them,  constantly  chopping  threes,  ripping  off  flowers  and  herbs  and  grass  from  their  blessed  soil.  hence,  witnessing  manon  solemnly  caress  the  petals  of  a  bleeding  heart  warmed  her  heart  inmensely.     “  yes,  i  like  flowers  very  much,  ”     a  smile,  soft  and  loving  and  bright,  touched  her  features.     “  and  i  knew  the  name  of  this  one,  but  i  don’t  know  the  story.  care  to  share  it ?  ”     curious  as  she  was,  she  couldn’t  help  the  enthusiasm  in  her  tone  at  the  prospect  of  learning  something  new,  yet  it  was  tamed  with  careful  reins  as  to  not  interrupt  the  calm—the  gentleness  that  manon’s  energy  radiated.

i really need to start writing down stuff. Tabitha walked faster, and cursed. never a good idea to rely only on memory, and a worse idea if its hers. Someone had booked a 9 o'clock tattoo appointment at Eternal Ink with her, she knew this. There was only one essential detail she might have forgotten immediately after confirming the session and hanging up the phone

was the session booked for tuesday or thursday?

she would not be taking any chances though! ( losing her job was not an option ) So there she was, tuesday morning at Eternal Ink. no one else there but the mermaid, herself, preparing the tattooing area

if no one arrives between now and 9:30 asking for me, the appointment is on Thursday. she repeated this thought in her head a few more times, just in case. Tabitha made herself comfortable in the parlor’s old sofa and took out from her bag a small book. she had recently decided to develop a reading habit after taking a liking to the term bookworm

9:07, followed by 9:14, and then 9:28. Thursday it is then. Tabitha closed the book and stood up. Should I go back home?, I have some free time right now, but I don’t -- Her train of thought was suddenly interrupted by someone stepping into the shop

               despite  how  distracted  river  jenkins  could  be,  how  oblivious  on  most  occasions,  she  was  a  responsible  person.  never  running  late,  never  delivering  after  a  deadline,  never  declining  a  job  for  the  sheer  lack  of  desire.  yet  to  every  rule,  there  was  an  exception,  and  today  of  all  days,  river  jenkins  was  running  late.                 worry  etched  on  her  features,  brows  furrowed  above  her  pleading  eyes,  her  breath  was  ragged  and  her  forehead  kissed  by  beads  of  sweat  when  she  stepped  into  the  shop,  the  palms  of  her  hands  finding  their  home  on  her  knees  as  she  tried  to  recover  from  her  run.     “  i’m  sorry,  i’m  sorry.  i  know  the  appointment  said  nine,  but  i—  ”     she  wasn’t  going  to  lie,  she  was  not  that  kind  of  person.  river  straightens  then,  sighing,     “  i  overslept,  honestly,  and  by  the  time  i  woke  up  i  was  already  late.  ”     that’s  why  her  hair  was  still  dripping  and  she  had  a  quick  oatmeal  breakfast  tucked  into  her  bag.     “  please  tell  me  i  can  still  get  my  tattoo,  i’ve  been  waiting  forever  for  it.  ”

sinclair had anticipated days like this, them forcibly having to deal with their monsters screaming in their head whilst being in the most inappropriate place to be in at this state. they have done their best, over the past five years to distance themself from all humans as much as they could when they had to. fortunately, sinclair was in the one of the rarely visited aisles in the library, sat on the floor with their knees as they gripped on one of the shelves, eyes trained to the ground whilst they pull themself out of their own thoughts, oblivious to the the faint footsteps approaching them.

               it  was  a  peculiar  scenario  to  cross  paths  with  sinclair  in  her  human  form.  it  hasn’t  happened  often,  just  once  or  twice  since  their  interactions  started,  and  always  in  such  busy  places,  losing  them  in  the  crowd  was  more  than  an  easy  task.  yet  third  time’s  a  charm,  isn’t  it ?   river  barely  noticed  the  presence  on  the  floor  (  big  mistake,  totally  on  her  )  only  when  sinclair’s  familiar  perfume  reached  her  nostrils  she  raised  her  head  from  the  book  in  her  hands  and  looked  in  their  direction,  a  gasp  getting  trapped  in  her  throat  just  in  time.     “  oh,  i’m—  i’m  sorry,  i  didn’t  know  there  will  be  someone  here.  ”     river  knew  she  needed  to  flee,       “  i—  i’ll  come  back  later.  ”     but  suddenly,  somehow,  her  feet  were  glue  to  the  ground.

⁽ ⠀ ✶ ⠀ ⁾ ⠀ ⠀ — ⠀ ⠀ maybe it was her fault for hosting a learn about cpr event on a weekday night.  a grand total of three people showed up,  two of which are a pair of teenagers giggling in the corner,  a phone passed between them.  the third seems to be enjoying a short nap in the corner.  approaching footsteps call her attention,  and yejide waves the newcomer over.     "hey,  wanna try some compressions?"     yejide taps the shoulder of the cpr dummy laying on the table nearest her.

           "get a solid five compressions,  and you can take some of those home with you."     up at the front of the room is a not-insignificant pile of baked goods from once upon a thyme.  a little treat and a life-saving skill to go along with it.  what more can you ask for?  she eyes the teenagers and then back at them.     "unless you're not here for the class."     she ignores the uptick of disappointment in her chest.     "you need help?  having an emergency?"

               if  there  was  something  river  loved  to  do,  that  was  learning.  she  was  never  good  with  academics,  and  her  grades  had  often  been  just  good  enough  to  pass,  but  gaining  knowledge  outside  of  an  oppressive  classroom ?   appealed  to  her  more  than  anything.  hence,  the  moment  she  heard  about  the  cpr  event  she  changed  the  counter  at  the  garrison  and  the  usual  beer  she  had  at  the  end  of  the  day  for  a  lesson  in  how  to  save  life,  not  a  second  thought  about  it.

               she  strolls  into  the  station,  lively  and  already  fascinated  at  the  prospect  of  this  event.  the  smile  at  the  greeting  she  gets  is  as  bright  as  the  morning  sun.     “  oh,  no,  i’m  totally  here  to  learn  how  to  save  lives !  ”     and  her  enthusiasm  is  contagious.     “  so  i’d  love  to  try  some  compressions,  whatever  those  are.  i  just—  look,  i  know  absolutely  nothing  about  this,  my  only  knowledge  about  cpr  comes  from  that  the  office  episode,  you  know?  ”
