like idk maybe it's pissing me off bc im brown and gnc and genderqueer and while i dont assume to know anyone's identity esp a celeb's.. it IS true that bipoc struggle more with gender expectations than white people esp since white people are the ones setting beauty standards. it's such an ugly intertwined web and it's so hard to untangle because so many traits bipoc naturally have just do not fit into neat little "gendered" boxes set by white people (see: how imane khelif was treated by the entire world for daring to be a woman that did not fit into the narrow idea of white femininity and beauty standards). it's already difficult for so many of us to unlearn all these ideas and the way they make us feel about our natural bodies. and then when we choose to perform gender our own way we have to deal with this stuff. like idk maybe im projecting. i probably am. but there's something to be said abt bipoc choosing to express themselves via non gender conforming clothing and styles and STILL being forced into a box assigned to us by a white person with white beauty standards and white ideas of binary gender ingrained in them. it's so fucking frustrating.

rbing to add: i just think its pertinent to mention that the relationship bipoc have with gender is a complicated one that is often misunderstood or not fully grasped by people (often white) who don't have the full context in which we relate to gender binaries (and the entire spectrum itself). this context is informed by our experiences as bipoc, our cultures (none of which are a monolith so ofc no experience will 1:1 match another person's but there are definitely commonalities) and the way we are often forced to conform to gender and beauty standards set by white people in both western societies and areas of the global south that have a history of being colonized.

when lewis chooses to intentionally buck those gender norms and present himself in a gender non-conforming way, it is not necessarily a rejection of masculinity itself. it is his own way of performing his gender. a reminder that none of us truly know or might ever know his feelings on his own gender or what he may choose to identify as. that is something intensely personal that he does not owe anyone to divulge. what we CAN see in the way he presents himself is that he does not conform strictly to the gender norms that society enforces. to deny that he does not conform strictly to masc norms often comes from a place of, consciously or subconsciously, denying the idea that black and brown men can be soft and gentle and nurturing and yes, femme.
