N_Hoke22 Art 141

Hi eveyrone! My name is Nick and I am looking forwar to everything that I will be learning this semester in Art 141.  I am typically a pencil pad kind of drawer, but I am hoping to broaden my horizons while taking this course.

Reflection of Art141

This course was everything I hoped it to be and more.  It gave me the freedom as an artist to create my ideas from the ground up and create stories around the characters that I brought to life.  I felt an overwhelming sense of accomplishment at the end of the semester because of all of the work and effort I put into each piece I did.  I feel like my portfolio and poster both illustrate the evolution of my journey because of the obvious improvements I made as a digital artist.  I came into this class having no clue what I was doing and it just goes to show that with a lot of practice and hard work you can achieve something you never thought you could.  I always thought that the pencil and paper was as far as my art could go, but I realized that I can achieve great works of art without any paper or pencil.  Thank you for this experience and great class!  I had a lot of fun creating and sharing my work(:

I think I should a tremendous amount of growth throughout this semester! If you look at just my transition from using the pen tool for the first time on the face trace to my mask project, you can see a definite increase in my ability.  I started this course with zero knowledge of how to do any of this and now I feel more confident in myself.  The piece that I was most proud of this semester is my movie poster because not only was the concept something that I was super proud of, but to start with just a concept and turn it into exactly what I envisioned is so satisfying.  I used every trick and tool I learned this semester and applied it to my poster without any major issues which really showed me how far I have come(:

Final Touches: Movie Poster

I took what my peers said to heart and I darkened the entire background in order to enhance the overall eerie feel of the design, I wanted to keep a glow on the face and hands to create a light source and bring those parts of the poster into the foreground.  I also filled in the right side of the face which was my original intent, creating this idea of the body and mind being taken over.  The galaxy background was another addition I made when I was playing around with paint brushes.  Lastly I turned the plaining latex gloves into alien hands.

Some thumbnail sketches of my poster ideas!

I took some of my inspiration from the movie posters I posted on my blog at the beginning of the project.  I liked the look of the “Us” and “Nun” movie poster the most and really wanted to capture the dark entity and the fear on the victims face.  To achieve these ideas I will use photos of myself and other objects around the house in order to produce the finished product I desire.

Reflection:Mask Project

This project taught me a lot about myself and all of the things that I can accomplish while taking this course.  At the beginning I came up with this design with no concept in mind other than it looked cool to me, I had to challenge myself to make a story around the idea to create a reason for its existence.  Using the pen tool is no easy task I found it to be very tedious and annoying because it never quite did what I wanted it to at the beginning.  It took a lot of work and practice to even figure out how to make the image I had in my head translate onto the screen.  I learned how to make my own gradients, form new more organic shapes, and how to utilize the critiques I receive.  Many of my peers offered me good advice to enhance the overall look of my design and I hope I did the same for them.  I wish that I could have figured out how to use the pen tool earlier on in the process because once I got the hang of it everything became easier for me, but the first half was a struggle.  Overall I am super proud of my design it was totally original and I hadn’t seen anything like it before.  I took two completely separate ideas and meshed them together in my own way and I was super happy with the outcome.

Final Mask Project!!!

I made some slight tweaks from my original design of the mask: First I moved the beak upward to close the gap of open space between the face and the beak, then I changed the detail lines to orange and green to compliment the colors of the mask rather than using black, one of my peers recommended that I use a freeform gradient on the face to enhance the shadowing, I changed the gradient of the pipes to where they know look like they are hot from producing the steam, lastly I added brown squares in an alignment to make it look as though you can see the straps of the mask.

This face trace project was the hardest one to date! It helped me find out new problems that may have arose while I worked on my mask project,  which allowed me to prepare for them as they came up.I struggled to make solid blocks of color as I found that some anchors can combined and cause the shape you are creating to turn the same fill color as the shape the anchor touches!  Overall I am proud of what I accomplished and its always nice to see a picture of my grandpa.
