Honestly I wish ppl on A03 wouldn't label fics as abandoned in their bookmarks when the author hasn't stated that they are abandoned. or no longer being updated.

Sometimes we're just slow...and it can be really disheartening to see that tbh ;-;

your public bookmarks are public, meaning anybody—including the author—can see what you put in a bookmark. and unless the author has specifically said the fic is abandoned, you (general you) don’t know if it’s abandoned or not. one of my favorite fic writers posted a new chapter of one of their fics after 13 years of no updates.

my point, you don’t know if a fic is abandoned just because it hasn’t been updated in years. you don’t know if the author will one day continue it. and saying “this is abandoned” just because it’s not updated regularly can be super discouraging to authors who write as their hobby and their gateway.

be respectful and considerate to fanfic writers who are kind enough to share their works with you to read for free.

Can we please stop saying "oh you believe in [this]? You're literally just a proshipper". There are many reasons why somebody would believe in proshipper ideology yet choose to not identify with the term. The biggest one being, the term is controversial.

Saying "I don't believe censorship is good, I think harassment is bad an unnecessary, and I don't think fiction affects reality on a 1–1 scale" will get you much less backlash than just saying you're a proshipper, so of course some people are going to prefer terms like "respectful anti" or "nuanceship". Not everybody wants to be in constant fear of death threats because they used a term somebody doesn't like.

Or the fact that the definition changes depending on who you ask, that's confusing. Even my definition might be considered wrong. Some people say just no harassment. Some people say no harrassment no censorship. Some people say the belief that fiction doesn't affect reality.

Or how about even when they get a definition, the definition is too vague. Like "fiction doesn't affect reality" is just straight up wrong, and somebody may not consider themselves a proshipper because of that. Or what is censorship? Do they mean banning books or getting rid of age restrictions that censor media? It is vague and it is confusing.

Let people label themselves, stop forcing labels onto others, and actually be respectful. You want to be an anti-harassment community? Stop harrassing confused individuals and calling them stupid.

Okay I'm going to try to explain some of the things wrong with this post because while I do agree that people should be able to label themselves, there is a lot of stuff that is pretty wrong here (or at least was not thought about). Bear with me, I'm not the most articulate.

The reason that calling yourself a proshipper gets you backlash is because people use other terms to mean the same thing. The term 'respectful antishipper' literally implies that being a proshipper is something to be ashamed of, or is wrong. The two prefixes are opposites, this is something we learn in primary school.

It's also because people have different definitions. Instead of preaching that some people should just drop the term altogether, we should understand that there are tools---such as the internet that you're using right now---that help us get correct information. For example, Wikipedia and the Michigan Daily both say that being a proshipper means to be in favour of people shipping whatever they want, regardless of personal preference. Proshippers are against harassment over ships because of this.

I have my own thoughts about the phrase "fiction doesn't affect reality" but I do think it's fairly obvious that people mean it doesn't affect reality 1:1, as you mentioned before. "Fiction doesn't affect reality" is also more of a profic belief, but that's off-topic and it can be used for both anyway.

As for censorship, a lot of people who call themselves anti censorship probably will have different views on it. It works more like an umbrella term. For example, when it comes to real world issues such as politics, I think children (mostly young ones, I know a lot of people who are classified as 'children' do actually understand) should be mostly shielded from that since they're still learning and may not have the capacity to fully understand the situation, though it's not the internet's responsibility to keep that from them. Other people may not believe that and they may think that children should be exposed to all sorts of political opinions early on to even assist with their development. We're still both anti censorship, we just have different views. To me, it's similar to how there are different types of alterhumans, but the one type that gets talked about most are therians.

Yes, people should be able to label themselves, but they should also understand that there may be larger consequences that come with that. If you're anti harassment and call yourself a 'respectful antishipper', actual antishippers will get the wrong idea about proshippers and you could cause harassment.
