"Stop asking if I want to do this and just drink the damn sake." He countered, motioning for Luffy to pour them the drinks even as he realized back into the lounged-out position he'd been in earlier. Head braced on a hand as he stretched his frame across the worn boards of the deck.
He'd never have said yes in the first place had he not been willing to form the bond of brotherhood with Luffy. Well aware that while the act of drinking sake together was simple, the significance behind the action was anything but. It was a life time bond, one to be taken more seriously than most and that would last for the rest of their lives. Even if for some reason they ended up apart, it would always be there, tethering them to each other.
It was why he was also aware of how nervous his captain was. Luffy had lost just as much as he had, if not more in his past. Growing up with few that he could call his true family. To know that his captain trusted him on the level that he did Ace was honor enough even without them having a drink together.
Luffy was slightly startled before he snickered and did as he was ordered, pouring the two cups of sake as he settled down into a cross-legged position; watching Zoro carefully, with a small rock, waiting for him to pick up the cup before Luffy did so that he could follow his lead rather than be the first and risk Zoro changing his mind.
He knew it was being paranoid, that Zoro had already proved that he wanted to go along with the sake-oath, but his childhood wasn't the healthiest and he didn't really have the best of belief in keeping people around him. His Gramps left him, Shanks and his crew left him, and even Ace left him, it was why he didn't know if Zoro would follow through even with the promise.
Although, something that did stick out with him was that he had known Zoro for less time than he had known Ace before the sake-bond had been suggested; and he seemed to have been through a lot more with the swordsman too. It was why Luffy trusted his first mate with more than just his life, he trusted him with the life of their nakama too.
It always amazed her how easily the Captain could brush off big gestures like this as something completely normal - or a given. Luffy was a pure soul. She supposed that what drew her to the Merry being her home, his hope, his dreams, it was infectious and he helped her get her dreams back.
"Because you went out your way to do something nice for me?" she explained but it felt like more of a question than a statement. She hadn't had anyone do anything nice for her before joining Luffy's crew since she was a child and gave herself to Arlong to protect her village. Some of the things she had done between being a kid and joining Luffy, she wasn't entire sure she deserved gestures such as this.
She had a lot of atoning to do. Not only to her village somehow, but to Luffy for betraying him the way she had.
Cocking his head to the side as his curiosity grew, Luffy eyed her carefully as she spoke a statement like a question, while he didn't understand most people; he understood that the reason Nami ended up questioning her own thought process was because she wasn't used to the possibility of people being nice to her.
"We're nakama" He repeated firmly, debating whether or not he should reiterate that point by putting his hat on top of her head again to reassure her of it. In the end, he decided to do it as he took his hat off and placed it on her head gently. "Before you even joined us properly Nami, you were always our nakama, I trusted you even when you were hiding things from us; the trees will make Merry feel more like home like Ussop's workspace, Zoro's training area and Sanji's kitchen. You are home and we are your family for as long as you will have us."
Hesitating before taking Nami's hand in his gently, he squeezed her hand lightly.
"Your past doesn't matter to us. Zoro was a bounty hunter. Sanji was a waiter and sometimes a cook because he and the old man would argue and he'd be punished with waiting tables; and Ussop was just the village liar... You are the Navigator of the Straw Hats, we'd be lost without you... literally"
Grumbling under his breath he shoved Killian's hand off of his back before standing and turning to stalk out of the bar after noticing that the other had paid. Others might have protested but he had no issues with a free drink. He was in enough debt to Nami as it was that he'd take what he could get. That woman was a demon when it came to added interest.
"Gee, I wonder why they avoid you like the plague." Perhaps the reason he hadn't was because the first time he'd really met Hook as more than just Harry's crew was.....after his son had almost died. When the older pirate had found him alone and breaking and had somehow helped put him back together. It made it hard to fear his partner's father when the man had become like one to him as well.
"Do you pester them as much as you do me or am I just lucky?" Pushing through the swinging bar doors he came up short at the sight of about ten men all grinning at them as one of them moved forward, almost purring in glee. "Well if it isn't my old friend, Captain Hook."
Killian continued to snicker at Zoro's reaction to his teasing, Harry had grown wise to his teasing years ago, Harriet could give as good as he did so wasn't fun to tease and CJ was terrifying when near a dagger so it wasn't often that Killian even dared to tease the blonde Hook.
"Apparently I have a scary reputation" Killian had a mock offended tone to his voice, as if he was shocked by what others believed him to be, but he didn't hide the grin on his face as he followed after the swordsman; debating whether or not to continue with him so that he could see his son. Contrary to what they would believe, Killian wasn't actually following them this time, he was on the island for a supply run; a large order of spirits that they usually bought a yearly stock of.
Cocking his head to the side curiously when he noticed the small gathering, Killian raised an eyebrow as he eyed the leader of the group. "Sorry mate, no idea who you are?"
"Oh, so you're just helping Harry out in protecting my delicate reputation?" He countered, a full-blown grin now pulling at his lips as he lifted his beer to his lips and took a sip. Unable to help but continue teasing the cook. "Should I blush next time you defend my honor and tell you to stop?"
"More like protecting them from Harry losing his rag with them" Sanji huffed in response, snapping back lightly as he continued pouting at the teasing from Zoro. "I doubt if he would be happy seeing them all fawn over you, or maybe you would do it to get a rise from him?"
He shifted slightly, bracing his upper body better so that his lover could curl into his side, sensing that the physical touch and warmth he could provide was what was needed more than anything. The move making it easier for Harry to fully curl into him if he wished to, yet still leaving him relaxingly lounged out on the deck. Naturally, he'd chosen one of his favorite spots when they'd all settled down, figuring this might have happened at the time.
Glancing towards Sanji when a blanket was thrown over Harry's lower half to keep him warm he nodded slightly in thanks to the cook.
It was the words that drew his attention back to his lover, nose brushing through his soft hair at his temple as he stated softly. "It's no longer just Gil or Killian that worry about you, Harry." Inhaling his boyfriend's scent he then added, his own worry lacing his tone this time. "So you better get used to it."
He knew that pushing wouldn't work, but he also knew that Harry needed to understand that he wasn't alone. That this crew wasn't the kind to ignore when one of the others was upset. They'd give them their space if it was needed, but they'd be there. Always willing to listen or provide whatever support was required at the time to help heal the deep running wounds they all had on their hearts and souls.
The moment that Zoro offered Harry the opportunity to curl further into him, Harry took it; he curled into his lovers side completely, gripping onto Zoro's shirt lightly and pulling the blanket closer around him. The figurehead was freezing and open to the wind, he also didn't really have the best clothing to sit in the wind in the night when the temperature dropped.
Sanji gave a small tilt of his lips at the nod from Zoro, not that he needed the swordsman's gratitude, he would have done it anyway because Zoro and Luffy were probably his best friends and the closest things to true brothers that he had in his life. Harry brought new life to Zoro and he and Gil brought an extra part of family to the crew so he would always look out for them.
Harry gave a light smile at his boyfriend with the affection he showed him and pressed a gentle kiss to his neck in gratitude.
"Thank you" Harry sighed lightly as he relaxed against Zoro and nudged Sanji lightly with his toes so the chef knew that he was saying thanks to him too. He hesitated a little before he sighed, his hand slipping into his pocket and bringing out a small locket that he always kept with him, something he never wore for fear of losing it in a fight; he opened it to show the boys the picture of his mother inside of it, one that was taken before she had settled to be a wife and mother. "It would have been their wedding anniversary today... Thank you for not calling Pa though, he would have gone nuts with me... he doesn't like me wallowing on this day, says I shouldn't feel guilty"
To have been hunted most of his life and then have those attacks on his life increase in both frequency and strength left little doubt in his mind that Harry put too much on his shoulders. That he believed things that weren't true because his life had taught him that they were. In truth, he was pretty sure the only reason Harry hadn't broken before now was because of his father and older sister. Killian and Harriet had made it clear they'd burn the world down for him.
They just had to make sure he knew that the Strawhats were now part of that list.
Pushing slightly away from his lover he glanced down at the largest of the injuries before adding, one brow arching slightly. "Will you let Chopper take a look at that now? It needs more than a little stitching."
Honestly at this rate Harry was going to be a patchwork of scars. Meaning he only had his work cut out for him since he intended to wash away the pain that each one came with. True they'd always be there. Reminders of what had happened laced with pain or worn with pride. But the feelings around them could be eased, softened from sharp edges to smooth ones. Healed enough so that they did nothing more then remind.
The silence was getting to Harry a little, even with the hat on his head, the darkness was encroaching again; at the mention of Chopper looking over him, he grimaced a little, not wanting the little doctor to see him at a weak point. But, the raise of his lovers eyebrow made him sigh lightly and nod lightly in confirmation that Chopper could check him over. Although, he kept his hand latched onto Zoro, keeping his boyfriend close to him, the weakness in his belief towards his crew making him think that Zoro may not return because of Harry's inability to fight off the men without his help earlier.
Luffy eyed Harry close, before he let out a soft sigh of resignation; Harry had the same look in his eyes that Ace often had; it was a look of self-doubt and sometimes self-hatred that was always very difficult to break passed.
"I'll go get them" Luffy reassured Harry softly, leaving his hat on his friends head "I'll ask Sanji to make some snacks too... maybe some hot chocolate?" At the weak nod from Harry, Luffy shot Zoro a worried look before he went to send Chopper into the cabin and also reassure their crew that Harry was okay.
"What the hell were you doing that you didn't realize it was the bloody marines that caught you? Shoving food into your face?" Honestly, Luffy could be such an idiot at times. How the fuck did you not know who captured you? Oh course, he conveniently forgot all of the times it had happened to him as well.
A woosh of surprised air slipped past his lips due to the strength of Luffy's grab and redirection down a different hallways.....that looked exactly the same as the one he'd been about to take.
Glowering now he stalked after Luffy, hands shoved deep into his pockets, making it clear that he didn't really see any of the marines that might find them as a threat.
"They weren't in uniform!" Luffy protested with a small whine at the insult from Zoro, although, he had to concede that food was one of the main things that could distract him enough that he wouldn't notice what the men were wearing when they arrested him "And it wasn't my fault this time! those assholes started it by going after the nice restaurant lady! they were also the ones that caused the most damage! I tried to limit the damage because this town has been nice to us!"
Luffy kept a hand on Zoro's clothes, not to keep him from wandering off, but more as a way of reminding Luffy that he was there; something he would do with Ace whenever they had to run from High Town guards after a dine and dash.
"I really did try and limit the damage Ro" Luffy pouted as he moved to keep pace with his first mate rather than being ahead of him, bouncing slightly as they continued through the halls.
He didn't pause to inform Killian that the older pirate was going to have to suffer the humiliation of being carried out of the warehouse. Instead, he merely leaned down and picked him up. Tossing his weight over his shoulder with a grunt before stalkign towards the door. At least the exit out of this place was littered with bodies, making it easy to retrace his steps.
"Yeah, yeah. I know. Don't tell anyone you got carried out like a princess." Not that over the shoulder was very princess-like, but he had a feeling it didn't matter to the older pirate.
Easily stepping over the forms on the ground and avoiding obstacles that could cause him to trip he made it to the massive open doors of the warehouse. Gaze flicking towards the port where the pirate ship was fast approaching before he darted into the forest. Winding his way through the thick underbrush before finally finding the case he and Chopper had found earlier.
Slipping in, he carefully lay Killian on the ground. Their small doctor pouncing on him to begin treatment as he noted. "I'm going to make sure we weren't followed. Keep him alive Chopper."
With that he slipped back out into the forest.
Killian let out a noise that was between a protest and a noise of pain as he was hauled up over Zoro's shoulder, he huffed and gave the swordsman a small scowl at the position he'd been put in but sighed and accepted his fate. He knew that he wouldn't have been able to walk anyway, not at a speed that would have resulted in them getting to safety without further harm coming down on them.
"This ain't the first time this has happened, and it probably won't be the last" Killian informed him grumpily, he wasn't going to complain, nor was he going to request that Zoro keep silent; it used to be a running joke back when he was around Zoro's age, that he'd end up being carried away from a fight at least once a month. Sometimes it was due to injuries, other times it was because Killian wanted to continue a fight that was obviously getting too bad so it was usually down to Gaston to carry him away at Smee's request.
Killian let out a grunt lightly as he was laid down on the floor and gave a weak smile to the small reindeer that he'd seen a number of times with his son whenever he'd made it his mission to bug Zoro and his son by visiting the swordsman and not his kid. The reindeer immediately moving forward and stripping down the old Captain's outer layers to get to his wounds as Killian just laid there and accepted the help.
"He'll be back soon, he always knows his way back when the crew are involved" Chopper reassured Killian as he noticed Killian's gaze focused intently on the spot in which Zoro disappeared through.
His gaze snapped towards the stairs when the three climbed back onto the Going Merry, relief that Nami had been found short-lived since before he could order them to take sail Chopper's shriek of terror echoed from below.
Pausing only long enough to give the others an order. "Get this ship out of here and out to sea. Nami, keep us close enough that if Chopper needs anything we can get it quickly."
Then he darted below, trusting that even when concerned for their captain the others would follow his order. Long strides carried him quickly toward Nami's room where Luffy had been carried.
"What happened?" The words fell from his lips even as he barged into the room and froze at the sight before him.
Chopper had been focused on keeping an eye on Luffy, checking him over for any sign of outward injuries that he barely registered the change in Luffy's scent until the moment that it had blatantly changed. And that was when he had shouted for Zoro, fear in his voice as he scuttled backwards, watching the bed in shock at the soft rising and falling of the child's chest.
His Captain no longer laying on the bed, instead, there was a young boy drowning in his Captain's clothes, the familiar scent not changing much except for becoming purer.
Harry chased after his partner, nearly crashing into the swordsman as Zoro froze in the doorway, the entire crew frozen in shock at the sleeping child on the bed in front of them.
"Oh my seas" Harry breathed in shock, his eyes flickering over the small form "He so cute..."
"I'm not buying that bullshit and we both know it." He shot back, arms folding over his chest as he settled in for the argument, making it clear with his posture that he'd not be backing down. Not this time. He'd allowed it in the past, but passing out due to lack of food was too much. Especially considering that they never knew what kind of trouble they'd face each day. With the bounties that they had on their heads, they needed to be in peak fighting condition or as close to it as possible.
"Passing out is unacceptable." Dark hues locked with Sanji's as he leveled a look at him that was clearly from one man to another. "I don't fucking care how busy you are, you need to eat."
"So, that being said, how can we help." Because he didn't know what it was like after all, to not eat. Since clearly it was more than forgetfulness for the other. This was deeper. A problem that had come from his childhood, probably his time stuck on the rock with Zeff. The issue was, since he'd never delt with something like this himself, he didn't know how to help. "And don't try one of your half-ass excuses or methods either or I swear to the fucking sea gods I'll call Zeff and tell Chopper what's really going on."
Shifting in the hammock enough that he could settle into the disagreement while still being able to watch Zoro without too much nausea, Sanji scowled at the swordsman, dismissing the nausea and headache building as he held his ground as best as he could. This was something he had lived with for years, not just from the island, but before then too. "I eat!" Sanji protested again, exasperation in his tone as he huffed "In the time we've sailed together, this is the first, last, and only time that I've passed out Zoro. And that was only because it was a journey between islands that was miscalculated on my part when it came to our supplies. It won't happen again."
The look that their first mate levelled him, made him feel like a kid facing Zeff again, but it was also more intense because he knew that it wasn't from a sense of responsibility like Zeff originally had; but genuinely seemed to be stemming from worry from the moss head that he usually bickered with daily.
As strange as it was, Zoro was probably tied for being his best friend with Luffy in that category as well; the three of them bickering constantly but always protecting the other and having each other's backs without words needed.
The offer of help shocked Sanji silent for a brief moment, it wasn't something he expected outside of Zeff. Not even the other chefs of the Baratie offered help. The threat to call Zeff and get Chopper's help as well made him blush lightly in protest as he made a small noise of disagreement at the situation "He's probably already told you his methods so you don't need to call him" 'unless you think I deserve him scolding me' Sanji huffed, he wanted to be annoyed, but instead felt fondly exasperated at his surrogate fathers interference, feeling care and love towards the man who had saved him from the edge so many times. "Chopper can be distracted easily..."
"That's no what I asked." she told him in a calm tone, eyes watching him closely, even as he watched out to sea. Gil's wellbeing was just as important to her as Harry's. Given their father's closeness, and Gil and Harry being joined at the hip, Gil had been like a second brother growing up.
"Just because you think Harry got hurt more doesn't mean your injuries and how you are feeling are any less important." She assured the younger pirate. Any injury was important to look at. Sure those with more injuries get dealt with immediately, but as soon as they were stable you focused your attention on the next person hurt. "Let's try that again, how are you? Dinnae make me need to ask your crew."
Gil blushed a little as he felt her gaze on him. He should have known that she wouldn't let him get away with such an answer, she was basically his eldest sibling, older than Trey and Junior, and just as protective as all of them as she was the Hooks.
"They wouldn't tell you" Gil protested weakly, although he knew that was a lie, he had a feeling that if Harriet went to any of the Straw Hats to inquire about Gil's wellbeing, they would all throw him under the ship and tell her that he's been blaming himself for Harry nearly dying. "And he is more important" Gil added, arguing weakly, "Ry is the younger of us, he's the target and I still couldn't keep him safe! He died Ettie! Died right in front of me! His heart stopped three fucking times and I couldn't do anything!"
The hawk? Mihawk? Irritation suddenly laced through him at the revelation that apparently the man who was his sworn rival was keeping tabs on him like some child. This was going way too far. Something he'd be informing all of these older-ass worry worts of the next time he saw them. Honestly it was like they thought they where still kids that needed to be monitored and put down for naps when they got tired. Worrying was one thing, hounding after them all over the fucking sea was another thing.
Hell, Killian hadn't even been to the grand line in years until they'd come here themselves.
"Fucking overbearing pack of mother hens." Cursing lightly under his breath he then leveled a dark look at Sanji. Past done. He was just.....done.
"Nami eats so much because you're constantly making things for her. Which, by the way she often samples and then hands off to one of us, usually Luffy, which is why he isn't hounding you day and night for snacks." Ignoring the parts about his own eating habits, since honestly, the food was perfect for his training, he barreled on. "As for things we like that you can't eat. That's fine. We appreciate it when you cook that for us, but you should make something for yourself as well on the side. Not just skip the meal entirely."
Sanji snickered lightly at the irritation that Zoro showed, he could understand the irritation, he'd noticed that it was always Zoro that the old men went too; it originally annoyed Sanji when he realized that the old geezer had approached their first mate and, then he felt a little grateful. Although, right now he was irritated at the fact that his old man was avoiding him, he understood worrying and keeping a distance, but it would have been nice to see the shitty cook every so often. "Ya know, I think Lu told Hawkeyes to fuck off... like out right told him to fuck off."
He was amused until the dark look was aimed at him and he swallowed a little nervous, he wasn't afraid of Zoro no matter how dangerous the swordsman could be; but he could never deny that Zoro didn't have ways to get what needed to be done, done.
A small frown flickered across his face at Nami not actually eating everything he gave her but passing them to Luffy, he sighed lightly and made a mental note to maybe discuss things with the others to work out the best things that he could pre-make so the ones who didn't always eat could just pick at them; while also making Luffy foods that will hopefully fill him between meals.
"It's wasteful" Sanji muttered weakly.
The thing was... When Sanji didn't eat, it wasn't because he was worried about his figure or calorie in take or anything like that; it was because his upbringing before Zeff made him think that making food for only himself was just a waste. He didn't need anything different, it was why he would just eat little bites of the sides before he added the ingredients that he was allergic to.
"Yeah, I noticed he doesn't scar like the rest of us do. Figured that one and any others came from before he ate the fruit." Though it was good to have the confirmation. It meant that since eating the fruit Luffy hadn't come across anything that could leave that permanent of a marking upon his skin. Not that he thought his idiot of a captain really cared one way or another.
The follow-up comment only received a huff of a reply, a light blush spreading over his cheeks at being called good by someone like Shanks. Yeah, they were both pirates, but he'd come to learn that that term had a vast difference in meaning depending on the crew and captain in question. Some truly wished only for the freedom that the label provided. To sail the seas and go on adventures. Others used it as a justification for power or cruelty.
"You almost done?" Knowing better than to move, after being hit over the head one to many times by Chopper, the impatience and need to move was still starting to get to him.
Shanks hummed lightly at the information, he wasn't sure if he wanted to know if Luffy had any newer scars since the devil fruit because it could mean that the wounds were bad ones. "Not sure if you've met his grandfather... crazy son of a bitch that man... he used to 'train' Lu by making him fight monkey's from a young age; one of the stories Lu once told me was that his grandfather had tied a shit ton of balloons to him to make him fly and then told him to get himself out of it. Lu was, maybe, four at the time? Makino told me she went berserk on the old man for it. But most of the scars... they are from stuff like that before the fruit"
He ignored the blush, not pointing it out because he knew that the young man probably wouldn't appreciate it; instead he kept his focus on the stitches until he reached the final one and nodded as he located a dagger to cut the thread once he tied it off. "Just need to get some bandages for it, but you need to stay laying down... you can move a bit, but not too much."
❝ Gotta be a bit more careful, ❞ he pointed out with a smile. If they were on dry land or at least on deck, Shanks would even reach out to ruffle his hair a little, but the only one he had was still very much securely wrapped around Luffy to keep him from drowning. With how Luffy clung to him, however, he half suspected he could let go of him for a little, but didn't. The kid was too precious for him to do so. Besides, with Luffy's crew coming to their aid, things would be just okay.
❝ Can't expect Beck to be fast anymore. The man's not in his prime anymore. ❞ Beck would have a field day with him if he heard what he said, but even his first mate had to admit that pushing fifty wasn't exactly young anymore. ❝ What I can promise you, though, is that he's going to give you a massive bear hug once we're out of the water. As will the rest of the crew, while we're at it. They've all been over the moon when they saw your wanted poster. ❞ Oh how they got drunk when celebrating hi first bounty. No doubt a get together party would take place once they were out of the water.
The blond that dived in to help seemed like a decent chap, as did the rest of Luffy's crew, whom he managed to spot were already doing everything to get all three out of the water as fast as possible. ❝ Well, only got one, so I'd need two instead of one hand, ❞ Shanks pointed out with a wide smile. ❝ Get Luffy out first, I don't mind floating here for a while longer. ❞
"I'm always careful" Luffy waved off dismissively, he wasn't entirely dismissive as he snickered in amusement as he tiredly pressed his head against Shanks' shoulder, his hand entangling tighter in the fabric. He really did try and be careful but his coordination wasn't always the best and going flying into the water was just the result of it, but his friends were always there to jump in after him. Although, sometimes he often did it just to keep his crew on guard when they weren't on one of their adventures.
Giggles of surprise escaped him at the small insult aimed at Beck, he had a vague memory of Beck often teasing Shanks rather than the other way around. He took a deep breath and grinned at the idea of seeing them all again, although he was also a little worried about how Ussop would react to seeing Yassop. "It's getting higher! Soon I'll beat yours!"
"Yo Moss! get down here and give a hand!" Sanji called up to Zoro as he wrapped an arm around Luffy and helped keep him above water as Zoro dived into the water too. Zoro immediately latched onto Luffy, mumbling to his Captain to release the fabric before he easily separated Luffy and got him to the Sunny. Sanji moved to wrap an arm around Shanks "You don't need to be down here while we got the idiot, there's more than enough of us to dive in after him; we always do." Sanji reassured the Captain as he swam closer to the rope that would pull them up to the deck, offering help if Shanks needed it "It's usually Zoro or I that jumps in"
