Idk how to word any of this or how to start it but I like to think Benny’s confident demeanor is a front he puts up in front of others. I know it’s probably obvious considering what he does in game, but I’m more so focusing on a more personal part of him—his fears. He values control and everything he does is in self-interest, but even those who are in control fear losing it.
Which leads me to my next point: he’s paranoid. It’s pretty apparent when you (the courier) let your guard down around him or try to work with him. Every time you do, it will usually result in you getting attacked by his bodyguards or tricked (locked in the president suite). I think from what I remember, he even makes comments about how he doesn’t trust the courier (and that they lowkey gotta die). Of course, no one would trust someone they wronged so badly, but Benny’s perception of the courier most definitely isn’t just distrust, it’s also agitation.
In game, he runs away a bunch of times—running away when you let your guard down with him, betraying the Khans (which I see as running away), fleeing to the fort (even if some part of that is related to his goal), possibly more I don’t remember. Obviously, he is a snake. Though, I like to see it more than him just running away from consequences and being plain pathetic, IT REFLECTS HIS INTERNAL THOUGHTS TOO !!!
After shooting the courier, I like to think he doesn’t think much of it until later on (mayhaps at night, when external forces don’t occupy his attention anymore and the tranquil silence leaves him with himself and the time to reflect). Thoughts of the courier creep in his mind—not from the guilt of possibly killing them, but agitation from the thought of the courier being alive, ready to get their revenge.
This paranoia lingers faintly as the days progress, and it spikes up abruptly one day when Benny is listening to the radio and hears that the courier he shot was very much alive. Though he doesn’t let it show—putting back on a confident, charismatic façade. After all, losing control is the last thing he wants.
But you can only run away for so long until it catches up to you. He tries to suppress these feelings by busying himself with work—focusing on the chip, planning escapes and what he’ll do at the fort, etc. unaware suppression only makes it louder, more persistent.
These suppressed fears manifest in his dreams, leaving him restless. He starts finding himself instinctively glancing over his shoulder, checking the locks, keeping Maria under his pillow. He knows it’s all in his head, but he can’t rid himself of these involuntary, reoccuring thoughts that plague his mind.
This is extra cus I wanna continue my interpretation: when the courier finally meets Benny again, his fears kind of interferes with his carefully constructed façade and plans. He doesn’t know the courier beyond face value, he doesn’t know their motives, he can’t predict their next move—so it keeps him on edge and hyper vigilant (hence why he drops his front with the courier more).
The courier is a thorn in Benny’s side that he can’t handle nor understand, and the only impression he has of them is this image composed by his paranoia and fear, so he tries to rid the courier with more effort without bothering to hear them out (unless they have certain types of perks).
Benny is afraid of uncertainty, and the courier embodies the very concept of it.

I've been growing to sort of understand sports and balls thereof and I feel like Data about it. I'm observing human activities. The world cup is about being in a group and yelling together I think
Riker takes Data to watch the federation worlds cup¹ with him and Data's just kind of standing there (having fun) (likes being included) and like, cheering whenever everybody else does
¹baseball is Sisko's weird niche historical special interest but I fully believe soccerfootball will remain largely unchanged in the future. This is actually canon I think per Worf's childhood trauma
