When talking about the horror of demons in the Arcana setting, people (me included, tbf) tend to focus on Valdemar. Which is understandable, mind you, they are a fascinating character from many angles and I could ramble about the lore theories and headcanons for a while! But the other demons are often "overshadowed" by Valdemar, despite being very interesting cases themselves, and representing different "stages" of lost humanity.
Vulgora, in particular, is heavily underused in the topic of horror-esque elements of the Arcana, and in the game itself tbh. I headcanon them to be the second oldest of the Courtiers, and by extension the second most powerful and, frankly, fucked up. While Valdemar is an "eldritch being beyond human comprehension" kind of being, Vulgora is a walking hivemind. Almost literally a swarm of beetles in a trench coat. The implications of that are fascinating. What was the transition from a single individual to a swarm like? How is the swarm maintained? Are the plague-carrier beetles a separate "breed" so to speak, or are they a part of the hivemind too?
Is "Vulgora" the name of the whole swarm, or is there a "beetle royal" in there somewhere that used to be a human?
I do have some thoughts/headcanons about this too! ovo
Vulgora's demonic trait, their one goal and passion, is war. Conflict, violence, however you name it. With them being an ancient being, they could have a major influence on some cultures and territories – like, say, an entire region so prone to violent clashes and full of raiders that it earns a name "Scourgelands". You know, the place where some tribes practice demon worship.
If the Scourgelands are Vulgora's usual playground, it would explain two things: why are beetles seen as a symbol of destruction by cultures of the Scourgelands and the Steppe, and why did a beetle show up at the end of that backstory tale. I don't think it was already a "plague" beetle, but rather a part of Vulgora's swarm that acted as a scout, attracted to the conflict and Vlastomil's "mark".
They were the second demon that Lucio, at the time a terrified freshly exiled 18 year old Montag, met and dealt with. In the following months, as Lucio picks up a new name and cobbles together a merc group, Vulgora would eat real well on the fighting that follows him. Still hounded by fear of his mother finding him, Lucio made more deals to gain power, and in that time some of Vulgora's beetles began merging with Vlastomil's pestilence, turning into the iconic carrier of the plague.
(It's also worth pointing out that this wasn't even the first "red plague" in Vesuvia's history, if Portia's route to be believed it happened before in some form. So I'd say Vulgora and Valdemar know each other rather well and had joined up before, so Valdemar knows the beetles make a great tool for corpse disposal, which was the actual purpose of the beetle well. Whether Vlastomil was present back then is up for debate, though I personally don't think so mainly because I hc him to be somewhere in 300-500 age range)

people who don't use or spend time on tumblr don't really understand how solid this place is for creatives and how we could be living in artist utopia if they fully undid the nsfw ban. the tag system? the dashboard? the silly anons who will send you the most insane sentences known to mankind? having your very old, shitty art make the rounds again because somebody finds value from it and wants to show their friends? no other place even comes close
Ooooo a Lucio stan. I'm wondering what's your take on Lucio's relationship with touch/sensation after not being able to feel anything as a ghost? It's pretty obvious he's touch starved with how much he clings to MC in his route, but i've been wondering another thing. Since he was incapable of having any sensory experiences for good three years do you think he would have moments where it gets overwhelming? I can imagine he wouldn't try to show it but going from nothing too all in a short span of time does sound really overwhelming. Then again this man seems to love extremes so...
It is both too much and never enough, in an odd, complicated way that he doesn't want to talk about. Or think about. He is a man of extremes that spent nearly two decades indulging in hedonistic debauchery! He doesn't get emotional over simple parts of human experience!
Except yes, he does. It's not just touch, either. Early on, there are so many "simple" things that might suddenly hit him with "it's been three years": food (repeatable), sleep, actually looking like himself (variable elements of that), travel, even pain in some ways. But touch is on top of the list, indeed. Not to mention that the MC adds a facet of intimacy, kindness, dare I say love, that Lucio might just be straight up unfamiliar with and that messes with his emotions the most.
Lucio is very good at "not thinking about it". I'd say most of the time, the sensations are not overwhelming him per se, but are definitely enhanced, he reaches a whole new level of enjoying life's pleasures. And whenever something is almost too much, he often manages to shove that feeling to the back of his mind fairly quickly*. How he learns to handle it will heavily depend on the MC, whether they notice, encourage him to talk about it, how they handle their own emotions, generally what sort of influence they have on him.
There's a fairly high chance for him to cry during/after sex though, especially if it gets particularly intimate and/or intense. That is something that I'd say can be overwhelming for him in those early post-route days.
Not that it'd stop him of course, he's got a few years to catch up on.
*I actually have a part of a draft of a rewritten scene that features this! It's a dragoat version of the moment they first arrive to the Realms 🐉💛🐐 Might change it into third person later because idk how many people even like first-person OC writing, but here's what I've got right now:
---
The first thing I feel as I slowly come to my senses is a dull sting of cold on my arms. Confusion cutting short my worry over separation from Asra, I try to open my eyes, but have to shut them again to blink away the stark white light reflecting off… is that snow?
Then, I become aware of several feelings at once. The warmth under my cheek, the scent of skin and fur and faint perfume, and then – movement.
I scramble onto my hands and knees as Lucio underneath me stirs with a groan. For a few long moments, I am transfixed by the color returned to his hair and clothes, the ghost I got used to over the past weeks now properly resembling the figure from the paintings adorning the Palace rooms and hallways. It is almost dreamlike, and when my voice comes back to me, all I manage to utter is:
“It worked.”
The bright red of his eyes’ sclera briefly startles me.
“What–“ With that single word, Lucio freezes with his mouth agape, meeting my eyes with a wide-eyed stare of his own. It quickly grows frantic, moving from me to his own hands, his clothes, and then he sits up so quickly that I barely manage to avoid collision. His right hand quickly shifts from feeling his own stomach to his chest, face, then raking fingers through his hair. When Lucio looks back at me, the shock and disbelief on his face gave way to the most sincere grin I have yet seen from him.
“You’re right! You’re right! Ahahaha!”
He jumps to his feet, getting a gasp out of me when he easily lifts me with him. Lucio’s laughter echoes through the snowy woods as he spins me around, giddy with excitement. I whoop and giggle along with his sheer infectious joy over something that seemed impossible just a few hours ago.
“I can feel things again! The snow’s cold, you’re warm… This is the best day ever!”
Lucio doesn’t let go of me after he sets me down on my feet, instead pulling me into a desperate, firm hug.
Firm, but not crushing. As I eagerly hug him back, barely keeping from self-indulgently nuzzling into him, I realise that Lucio still does not feel quite right. He is solid against me, certainly not a ghost anymore, but my senses seem slightly dulled, the touch missing just a small tinge of weight behind it, and his scent being weaker, less personal than someone should have. I recall Asra’s teachings about the magical realms, people visiting them with their soul and mind, but almost never – physically. I have to wonder if Lucio, too, cannot feel me like he would in the material world, but this is not the time for such questions.
Not if what he has now is already plenty, compared to his existence as a ghost.
Perhaps without analysing my own senses, I would miss the slight tremble in his arms, or how a few of his breaths have a quiet shake to them. With ache in my heart, I hold him closer until it soon passes, wishing I could do more, but that would be completely inappropriate—
Releasing his hold on me, Lucio plants a messy, lingering smooch on my cheek.
…
…
I touch the spot where he kissed me. My skin is still warm from his lips. When I speak, it comes out as something between a whisper and a squeak.
“Did you just… kiss me?”
My broken voice, or possibly my questioning of the obvious, gets a short laugh out of Lucio.
“Hmm. Pretty sure I did.” He winks at me. “And why not?”
I can think of plenty of reasons, the same reasons that I have been repeating to myself for the past week in futile attempt to still my own feelings, which sprouted like weeds and seized my mind in the most distracting fashion. Lucio’s casual compliments and teasing were not helping matters, but I convinced myself so firmly that this’d been nothing more than his manner of talking or entertaining himself.
Lucio does not give me the time to voice any of the thoughts rushing through my mind. His smile turns utterly shameless and he holds both hands out to me.
“I’ll just say it, Alastor. I’ve had a lot of fun ever since you showed up. You’re a wicked smart, adorable, hotshot magician. What’s not to like?” He moves a little closer, my face suddenly feeling hot under the intensity of his gaze. “And I know you like me, too.”
My breath hitches. “Oh, gods, I was not hiding it well, was I…”
“Hah! No, not at all.” Of all the foolish— “It’s hard to miss with those big, pretty eyes of yours.”
He brushes a few stray strands of hair away from my face and tucks them behind my ear, giving him a better view of the said eyes, and I finally have to look away. I can almost feel my pupils dilating as his fingers then gently trace my jaw until his forefinger rests under my chin, slightly tilting my face upwards so I look back at him again.
“So… how about I kiss you properly this time? I say we’ve waited for that long enough.”
This is a terrible idea, the rational part of my mind reminds me. I cannot offer nearly enough as a partner to someone like Lucio, once a count of Vesuvia married to Nadia.
Yet after the sleepless nights, the hours spent on wishful sketches and scribbling lamenting prose throughout my diary’s pages, whatever rationale I might have had to refuse this offer is overpowered by the selfish, emotional part of me. The part that hopes, yearns, desires this, him, so fervently that I can do nothing but follow its demands at last, breaking the silence just before it becomes awkward.
Julian: first, puppy eyes. then seizes the moment and sinks to his knees, begging in a quavering voice to be told what he did wrong to be shunned by his heart's dearest angel, how is he to live without his love -
Asra: a little embarrassed, only because this is usually their style of teasing. giggles and sneaks into your space until you're so flustered you give in. follows up later in case his style of teasing is unpleasant for you
Nadia: a soft, low chuckle later, she's gently but firmly taking your chin in her fingers and commenting on how good magicians know when to play tricks and when to pay their dues. will have her kiss then and there.
Muriel: flustered and then horrified at the possibility that he just leaned in for a kiss that you hadn't consented to. sulks when you admit it's a prank, keeps "almost" doing affectionate things for you until you relent
Portia: oh-ho, don't start something you can't finish! plants a sneak attack style kiss on your cheek, yells "tag, you're it!", and sprints off into the garden. kiss tag is your new favorite summer afternoon picnic game
Lucio: screaming, crying, throwing up, where is his kiss? no kiss for Lucio?? did he do something wrong??? loudly complains about the injustices until you give him his kiss, and then two more for damages
Once, whispers echoed through the halls of the Vesuvian Palace, rumors of the parties of old that Count Lucio was known to host, where invitees' sexual desires were encouraged and explored.
Now, the whispers have returned, plans have been set in motion, and a red envelope arrives at your doorstep with a formal invitation.
Will you attend the infamous Midsummer Masquerade?
Inspired by previous iterations of this event (which you can find at @midsummermasquerade-archive and @the-midsummer-masquerade), the Midsummer Masquerade Arcana Game fan-event is back!
This event will be a week long, starting the first day of summer, and feature a number of spicy/kinky prompts to fuel your OCs wildest fantasies. Its premise is that this is a Masquerade (much like the one in the game itself, except, with sex) taking place outside of the canon timeline, allowing you to create any kind of scenario for/with our beloved M6, or any other character, and your own OCs.
Stay tuned for the official prompt list and extended rules, but as a general statement, this will be an adult only event, 18+. Any minors engaging with this blog's content or producing their own for the event will be blocked. We won't ask for any kind of actual, legal age verification (we're not tumblr, lmao) but we will be checking that your bio shows that you're an adult in some form.
We hope to see you at the Midsummer Masquerade from June 21st-27th!
None of that "Oh no they bomb-dropped all the episodes in a week 1 month ago, I'm late!" "The tag hasn't been active all week is the fandom dead?" "I only got a hundred shares the first hour no one cares about my art"
Slow down
Take a deep breath and slow down
Fandom is YOU. And me and everyone. If we doodle stick figures for a show that ended 30 years ago we aren't "late" or "doing too little", we're playing dolls in our own time and having fun with works of art that mean a lot to us
You can literally watch and engage with something that aired in 2004 as if it aired yesterday
If the tag hasn't been active for 14 months guess what? If YOU post there, it isn't dead. Literally you can talk about anything you want whenever you want there is no weird law against watching things that people aren't actively talk about
Ohhh i have another question, what are your opinions on the courtiers? Any favorites? Favorite moments? Anything you'd like to be added to them or their writing?
@cyanide-rifle this is where all the gaps in my knowledge become super obvious because I haven't researched those guys nearly as much as the M6 and I don't really write for them :')
That said, I love the way they're designed! Since the Arcana's story revolves around the mystery of how the patrons have influenced the past and present, having figures ranging from chaotic to evil that act as agents for the other realms/the Devil is delightful. They also present an interesting counter narrative to what it means to interact and make deals with the Arcana figures.
Valerius: One of these is not like the others! If I'm remembering right, while the other three courtiers came to Vesuvia with/during Lucio's being Count, Valerius was already established as nobility with his own political career before Lucio showed up. While his attitude towards regular Vesuvians is abysmal and he definitely plays more of an antagonistic role at the beginning of the game, it's also clear that he has a solid understanding of the responsibilities of being a leader. I really wish we could see more of his backstory of what got him into politics specifically and what kind of courtier he could become moving forward (not to mention that he does have some adorable potential as a love interest).
Volta: Adorable. Precious. Sweet little baby. Yes, she's in a villain's role, but the more you know and see the more clear it is that she's a victim of circumstance. I was actually pleasantly surprised to see references to how she used to eat plague beetles as a way of slowing the spread of them (and to deal with her bottomless appetite). Was she ever meant to be a courtier? No, and the consequences of her gluttony are nothing to sneeze at, but deep down I just like seeing her free of her deals and curses and enjoying a quiet peaceful life away from craziness of Vesuvia. The time for it is long gone but I would've loved to see a tale (or series of short tales) of Volta's post-upright ending life where she wanders around Vesuvia's food stalls and rates them, while providing exposition on the cultural influences present in the city and what kind of transformation it's going through under Nadia's leadership.
Vlastomil: He become so much more interesting to me after reading Lucio's pre-prologue tale because what do you mean this silly slimy guy is the source of the plague?!? I actually really enjoy how the courtier with the most obvious contribution to the suffering and past problems of Vesuvia is also the most passive one. He doesn't want to be here, he wants to be left alone with his worms, and that single minded focus keeps him from doing anything at all about the plague he's the ultimate source of. You even get the feeling that he's not that malicious, he's just haphazardly agreeing to whatever someone else asks him to if it lets him get back to his obsession. I'd be very interested to know a little more about how he came to be a demon that far south to begin with, but other than that his character is so straightforward that I don't feel a draw to analyze him that much.
Vulgora: Honestly the one that I have the least thoughts on (I'm so sorry lol). Unless I've straight up forgotten it, we don't really have a backstory for them or a strong characteristic beyond a love for violence. Unlike Valerius, Volta, and Vlastomil, they're too far gone to be redeemed to a human form, but unlike Valdemar, they don't seem to have any established lore as a demon. The only narrative takeaway I really have for them is how they seem to provide the most foreshadowing for what kind of creature Lucio could've ended up as if his deals went more in his favor - in fact, a lot of Lucio's blood-obsessed, villainous dialogue seems to me to be a toned down version of how Vulgora speaks and reacts in conversation.
Valdemar: oh boy. They are so expertly designed that I don't often care to reference them simply because I effectively Do Not Like them. I really loved how the Arcana made more use of their ancient, unsettling, eldritch horror vibe in Portia's route, given how the main Arcana villain in the first three routes was always the Devil. We got a new scale of how ancient and influential Valdemar is and it left me with even more questions than answers. What is their backstory? What other parts of the world have they affected over the years? What historical events and catastrophes have they been involved in? The mystery just doesn't stop with them and it's an excellent trait for an antagonist.
That's all my rambling on that subject, but if any courtier lovers who know/remember far more than I do want to add, please do!! This is an aspect of the Arcana that I've spent way less time in and I'm sure I have plenty more to learn there ^.^
