PART 1 - hi tina, I was wondering if you could give me a little advice. I'm Nigerian + live in a predominantly-white suburb, so for a long time I've wanted to go to an HBCU. However, in the past few years I have noticed the strong Nigerian community in Texas and have been really considering going to school there instead. The HBCUs in Texas don't really interest me major-wise, so I have thought about going to a PWI there instead. The last time I went to Texas was like 10 years ago to visit my

PART 2 - "uncle" in Dallas, and I'm nervous about how I'll fare living in the south. My biggest concern about going to PWI is having to constantly deal with racism/negativity. So, I'm interested in your opinion on whether or not it would be a good idea to go to a school in Texas so I can be immersed in its Nigerian community or if I should stick with my goal to go to an HBCU. If it helps, the TX schools I was considering are UNT and UH. Thanks you so much in advance!

So personally I would definitely suggest going to a PWI esp. considering the fact that you’re already not leaning towards an HBCU as much and they don’t offer the majors you’re looking for. When it was my first year going off to college I had got accepted to an HBCU but declined b/c I felt like I wouldn’t mesh and I did want to experience some bit of my African culture. It’s not to say HBCUs don’t celebrate the Nigerian culture at all b/c there are a lot of African Student Organizations that cater to that if that’s what you’re looking for.

I didn’t get accepted into UNT but always wanted to attend. If you’re leaning towards either of those schools I would approve because they cater to your educational, social and Cultural needs. UNT and UH is like Nigerian central so you won’t take an L in that department trust me lol.

As far as not wanting to attend a PWI b/c of racism I would just say be prepared for it in any aspect of life. I faced acts of racism on two different occasions while attending Stephen F. Austin out of my 3 years being there. It’s not easy and honestly heartbreaking when it happens but I would say it builds character if it’s handled correctly! Nonetheless I think you have good choices in mind and are very intentional with what you want out of your college career/experience. Sorry if this was extremely long lol ❤️
