After meeting and hanging out with her best friends and their college friends, Hera found herself in a car with Haechan, who had been tasked by her friends— mainly Jaemin— to take her home.
“You don’t really have to drive me home,” she said as the boy had started the car, “It’s only like... an hour commute, it’s fine if you just drop me off at the train station,” she added.
“An hour and thirty minutes,” he corrected, “only 30 to 45 minutes if I drive you back,” he then added, “and your friends asked me to drive you home, Hera,” he reminded her, his eyes focused ahead as he had started driving.
“I know, but... it’s not like I haven’t gone home by myself before.”
“But your friends would feel more at ease knowing that you got home safe,” he countered, glancing at her before looking back at the road. “It’s along the way to where I’m going anyway,” he said, shrugging.
The girl let out a sigh. “Is it really okay for you to drive me back, though?” she asked, still worried.
“Yes, Hera, it’s fine.”
“Are you sure?”
Haechan chuckled. “Yes, I’m sure,” he assured her.
It was silent for a while as Haechan drove, with only some song that Hera noticed as a Role Model song playing softly on the radio, and she tried to wrack her brain for anything they could talk about just so the car ride wouldn’t be awkward.
“So… where do you live?” she suddenly asked.
Haechan fought a small smile at her attempt to start a conversation, then replied, “The same building as Jaemin, actually.” Before Hera could say or ask anything else, he continued, “but my parents live near SMU. I’m actually on my way there— to my parents’ house, not SM,” he explained, earning a chuckle from the girl beside him.
“If your parents live near the uni, then, why didn’t you study there?” she asked in curiosity.
“NU has always been a dream,” he replied, “and because my mom’s a professor there.”
She hummed. “Neo is a lot of students’ dream school,” she agrees, nodding— then she halts, “Wait, is your mom a professor at NU or at SM?”
“SMU,” he replied, “Dr. Sunyeon Lee. She mostly teaches med students, I think?”
“Oh!” Hera perked up, scooting slightly in her seat so she was closer to the driver’s seat. “I’ve never met her, but I have heard about her. I had to take Bio my freshman year and my professor talked about her,” she said. “You’re pre-med, right? Same as Jaemin?”
“Yeah, Bio Medicine.” He nodded. “I’d offer my services in case you would need any help for some Bio-related paper in the future, but I’m sure Jaemin helps enough when he’s not misplacing them.”
The two laugh at his comment, and Hera couldn’t help but think about how good the boy looked when he was smiling. Earlier, when they had been with the others, although he did smile, she noticed that he had seemed distracted— even distressed, as he had first been when she saw him earlier that night before the others arrived.
He looked better like this, Hera thought— smiling like there was nothing else bothering him. He was just happy, at that moment.
“I don’t think I have to write a bio-related paper anytime soon, but I may just consider your offer, Haechan Lee,” she said to him, and Haechan only smiled in response.
Not wanting the conversation to end there, she continued. “So… is it like a family thing?” she asked, and when his brows furrowed, she continued, “taking up med, I mean,” she clarified. “Are both your parents doctors, or is it just your mom?”
Haechan blinked a few times, and Hera didn’t fail to notice how the smile on his face slowly faltered. “Uh… yeah,” he said, nodding his head slowly.
Oh, Hera quickly realized, this is why he looked distracted earlier.
She didn’t want to press any further, and it was obvious that the boy did not want to talk about his parents, since he cleared his throat and decided to change the topic, instead.
“How about you, then? Why didn’t you study at NU?” he asked. “I mean, some of your friends study there.”
Hera shrugged. “It’s hard to get into NU,” she replied, “and SMU is a good university. It’s always been the university that I knew I would go for college.”
“I’m sure you could’ve gotten in.”
“Neo University?” Hera laughed, knowing that he was just saying that to be nice, since he was smart enough to get into the university. “You don’t know me enough to say that.”
“Just felt like you could.”
“Based on what?”
He shrugged. “Vibes?”
She let out a laugh, shaking her head as she turned away from him. “If my doctor is basing things on vibes, I will actually pass away,” she joked.
“Then don’t get sick,” he said, going along with her joke, “we wouldn’t want you to pass away now, would we, Miss Hera?”
“Would you let that happen?”
“Jaemin would probably kill me first,” he muttered. “And why are we even talking about your death at my hands now?”
“Why are you saying I would have passed NU’s college entrance exams based on your vibes?” she countered.
“Why are you answering my question with another question?” he asked, glancing at her when they reached a red light.
They both held eye contact only for a second, but it somehow felt longer. They both let out a laugh as they turned away from each other, with Hera leaning back on the carseat and shaking her head.
They both continue with small talk after that before they eventually fall back into silence, this time more comfortable than earlier.

Hera jumped up from her spot on the couch of Jaemin’s living room as the front door suddenly burst open, fully expecting her best friend. Instead, she saw a familiar boy walk in, looking slightly distressed.
“Please tell me you have some alcohol here because I cannot go back to my parents’ house without at least a bit of— oh.” He stopped in his tracks as he saw the girl standing in the middle of the living room, looking back at him with furrowed eyebrows. “You’re not… Jaemin,” he stated.
Hera then let out a laugh, now recognizing who he was from the picture Jaemin had sent her earlier. “No, I’m not,” she confirmed. “You must be his friend, Haechan?” She asked.
“Uh, yeah,” he replied before chuckling awkwardly.
“Jaemin’s at the fast food restaurant nearby to get food, in case you weren’t aware,” she informed him, the boy nodding and muttering an ‘oh’. “I think he has beer in the fridge, but that’s it,” she added.
Haechan rubbed the back of his neck, letting out an awkward laugh. “Right, I’m not… I’m not actually going to get drunk before going to my parents’ house, that’s— that was just a joke,” he clarified.
“Hey—“ she raised both her hands— “I don’t judge. My parents drive me crazy sometimes, too,” she joked.
He let out a huff. “They drive me crazy, alright,” he mumbled before lightly shaking his head. “Anyway, uh, did he say when he’s coming back?”
“Not really, but I’m sure he’ll be back soon.”
“Huh. Why didn’t he just have it delivered?”
She shrugged. “I asked him the same thing, he said he didn’t think to do that. I didn't know he wasn't home yet when he asked me to come over,” she explained.
“Oh!" she suddenly perked up, "I’m Hera, by the way," she introduced herself, "Hera Seo. Sorry, I didn’t start with that.” She smiled sheepishly at the boy. “I’m Jaemin’s friend.”
Haechan looked at her as if in recognition “Oh, you’re the childhood best friend who is an education major from SMU?” He tilted his head to the side. “English educ, right?”
“Yep. That’s me.”
He smiled at her. “I’ve heard a lot about you from them,” he said. “I’m Haechan, by the way— you already knew that—“ he laughed— “anyway, uh, it was nice to meet you, Hera.”
Hera smiled back at him. “You too, Haechan.”

thinking about an episode au where it diverges from the main plot. it's set 5-6 years later — haechan is a doctor at a hospital in some city far away from everyone else, he's already lost contact with almost everyone (except markrin), and he comes across someone he hasn't seen in a long time.
nari is a project architect working at her cousin's construction firm, in a city far away from everyone else. she moved there after graduating, and since then she had lost contact with everyone. she'd built a pretty good life there now, she has a good job, she made new friends, and then ... she comes across haechan, who's new to the city, and at first she doesn't want to interact with him at all.
they never really became close back then, nor were they even friends. they were acquaintances at best. he was always just her former best friend's boyfriend back then so she never felt the need to have some sort of close relationship with him, so seeing him again was slightly awkward. but then she finds out he's her new neighbor... and all of a sudden she keeps seeing him anywhere she goes — at the grocery store, at the coffee shop near her work, at a fast food restaurant, at a convenience store, the hospital (ok to be fair, he does work there...), and suddenly it felt like he was just everywhere.
so, when they both end up being at the same bar at the same night, with the same group of people (turns out they have mutual "new friends" in the city), they can't help but actually start talking to each other. one conversation turns into getting each other's contacts and texting each other, to seeing each other at the grocery store then shopping together, to seeing each other at the coffee shop and deciding to sit together, to hanging out at each other's places and ordering take out (because it's movie night and turns out they actually have quite a few similar interests), to developing a genuine friendship they never thought they would have (nari being the only sense of familiarity for haechan in a city he's not really familiar with), to hanging out and making plans together despite being busy with work because — because somehow, they feel less tired when they're with each other, a respite from their busy lives — and to eventually, coming to the realization that... oh, they're starting to develop feelings for each other.
then, conflict arrives in the form of hera seo, who is in the city for a conference, and sees both her (former) best friend and ex-boyfriend "hanging out", years after the last time she saw them.
guys this has been plaguing my mind for MONTHS so im giving them to u so we can be haunted by the possibility of hyucknari together 🫦 also if this feels like a plot to a 2000s tv drama,,, thats because they are dair coded to me ok HAHAHAH
also i dont really like the idea of dating your best friend's ex/dating your ex's best friend, (even if you're not really on speaking terms with the "best friend" anymore)........ but this is fiction and i love angst 👍🏼 HAHAHAHAHAHHA
