Some musings about writing...Just something that I noticed when I came near the end of my writing projects. I noticed that I was procrastinating the closer I got to the finish line. And then I realized after much meditation that I didn't want to say goodbye to the story and these characters I had developed. It was completely unconscious but once I became aware of this, I made a conscious effort to make a closing writing ritual. And reminded myself that I can always return to these characters in some form. I had to post this picture because my twist out came out fiyah!! It's been a long journey with my natural hair and I have learned to love and accept my hair more and more each day. I have learned the following tips and utilize them daily: 1. Speak kindly to and about your hair. I have learned not to be discouraged when I have a bad hair day or a style doesn't come out the way I've expected or whatever. I find that my hair appreciates me even more. 2. Call your hair by her name. Acknowledge her beauty and glory. The Bible says that a woman's hair is her crown 👑 of glory. Acknowledge that. Some people have gone as far as to give their hair a name. Miss Tabitha Brown calls her hair Donna. I've named my hair Nella. And when I call her by her name she really likes that!! 3. Water is your friend!! Drink lots of water 💦💦!! Also hydrate your hair with water first before you use moisturizers and oils etc. Water is the real source of moisture for our hair. 4. Wash and condition your hair as often as you can. I try to wash my hair every 7 days, 10 at the most! But if you're ever in a pickle, don't be afraid to rinse or douse your hair with water 💦 for a quick refresh. 5. Learn what works best for your hair. I had to learn the hard way that my hair doesn't like to be in braids for too long. Nella doesn't like to be constrained for more than 2 or 3 weeks. She also doesn't mind a little heat every now and again. I can do a light blow dry to stretch my hair after washing with little repercussion. It's better for me to stretch it than to get lost in tangles. 6. Lastly, get rid of any dead and split ends. But also don't over-trim your hair. I hate the sight of a split end, I'm a little OCD about it, so I'm guilty of this. Now I have found a good medium with trims every 3 to 4 months. 7. Invest in quality, all natural products. You don't have to spend a fortune but the more organic the better. So I got a silk press and a hair cut today from my Cuban godfather Miguel. It was time to remove the unnecessary layers and dead ends and embrace the new. My hair is back to it's natural fullness and is just past my shoulders---it will surely return to midback soon enough. This pandemic (and other matters) wreaked havoc on my hair and I have been working on its restoration behind the scenes. So glad my hard work has paid off. At a Japanese 🍙 BBQ Lantern 🏮 House for a night 🌉 🌃 on the town with my love. Haven't done this in a while because of the pandemic. We had a good time and it was an interactive experience. The food was excellent and you made your own food hibachi style. We had Kobe steak 🥩 and shrimp in a garlic sauce and wings dipped in a miso chili 🌶️ sauce. Also an avocado 🥑 salad. For dessert we had a chocolate 🫕 lava cake 🎂 and vanilla ice cream. Very tasty 😋👍. Slide for pictures of the food. I didn't show everything unfortunately. Forever X. I called him a minister from the first time I heard him pray. He was so unique that he brought his faith and his demons and pain to hip hop and shared it with the world 🌎. He wasn't afraid to be himself and proclaim his love for God. He went through a lot and experienced turmoil just like so many of us. I remember feeling for him whenever he fell and praying 🙏 that he would get better find healing and continue on his mission. Most recently he made another successful comeback or return to music 🎶. And I remember being happy for him but also kind of taking it for granted because someone as talented and gifted and unique as DMX was supposed to make it. He was supposed to continue making music 🎶 until the end. I just didn't think the end was going to come this soon 💔💔. Rest in Peace DMX. Cicely Tyson...May she rest in peace. When I think of black excellence she is a part of the collage that appears in my mind. I was raised with the works of Ms. Tyson, a fellow Harlemite, by my mother who was a fan of hers. I had the good fortune of meeting her in NYC once after a theater event on the Upper West Side. She had come to support a local revival of a Langston Hughes play. She must have heard about it and wanted to show support and appreciation to the director of the play, another AA woman. I was so impressed that a woman of her stature would seek out and support other black artists of the theater in this way. I think that this speaks volumes of who she was as a person. I am grateful 🙏 for her work and her presence and her legacy which I will share with my children as my mother shared with me ❤❤. Rest Well Queen! Wild Women Don't Have The Blues💭🗨🗯 💙💛💙💛💙 Washed my hair yesterday night. Fluffed out my curls today and gave myself a trim too. My wild hair made me think of the old blues song by Bessie Smith whom I learned about in college. The Blues women were kind of like the ladies of hip hop today: outspoken, daring, sexy and could get a little spicy. And Bessie was no exception.
