This is the reality that black people have had to live with for hundreds of years, but I think white people are finally starting to realize that civil liberties can be suspended at any time.  The powers that be are not your friend.  The institutions which are ostensibly set up to keep you safe are actually there to keep you in line and punish those who even think about stepping a toe over.  There is no justice in the United States, and there never will be if we allow these institutions to remain as they are.  Things are not hopeless, we CAN force fundamental change, nothing is too big or too deeply ingrained to be gotten rid off.  Monarchy was the law of the land, until it wasn’t.  Chattel slavery was the law of the land, until it wasn’t.  Militarized police forces are the law of the land, until they aren’t.

It is no secret that laws are arbitrarily enforced, disproportionately effecting people of color; this is a not a bug, this is a feature.  The system was designed like this on purpose, “it’s okay when WE do it, not when YOU do it.”  There’s an old adage that rings true now more than ever; if a law is unjust, then you must break it.  If your opponent is cheating, you can’t win by playing by the rules.  The rules have been thrown out; if they’ve decided not to follow them, you are under no obligation to do so either.  You don’t get Civil Rights Points for taking the “moral high ground.”  You can’t shame your enemy into complying with the handicap they force upon you.  Nobody should uphold their own shackles.  In for a penny, in for a pound; the current justice system makes little distinction between peaceful and violent protests, so what incentive do we have to remain civil?
