The Clow set 2015 edition
Got my package of The Clow in last weekend and just had the chance to write up and snap some photos of it. I was really excited to be able to get one since all other stores are pretty much sold out by now!
It's also known as "The Perfect Clow" on some listings(I don't know why). This is a re-release of the original set originally produced in the late 90s.-early 2000s There are extremely few of those circulating so unfortunately I have nothing to compare to, but here is a quick review of the new edition:
Packaging
The Book of Clow is fully shrinkwrapped in clear wrap to protect from scratches. The edge of the book is also covered in a layer of corrugated cardboard to protect the surface from dents and wear that might happen in transit, but other than this no other protective layer or packing on it so it's up to the shipper to make sure that the rest of it is packed well to hold up against transit wear.
You'll also notice the sticker as soon as you pick up the box. This sticker is basically the authenticity sticker and authorization that indicates the reprint in commemoration of Nakayoshi's 60th anniversary. This sticker also indicates the ISBN number of the book(a little ironic since it's not technically a book but categorized as such). I recommend writing down this number and keeping it somewhere in case you want to try to locate one.
The sticker itself is also stuck directly on the book, not the shrinkwrap. It is a low tack sticker, meaning that it will peel off easily with little effort and NOT leave any disgusting residue so your book won't get damaged. Just use a light touch of your fingernails to peel it off. It's really not sticky at all and it's possible to accidentally scratch or damage the cover with your nails if you press too hard. The small sticker pieces used to hold together the cardboard covering the sides are the same.
The Book:
The Book of Clow is constructed much like a box. It feels very thick, and despite being constructed out of paper material it's actually pretty dense and solid. On the front is the imprinted image Kero as the book appears with the back cover indicating the magic circle of Clow.
The entire book is an accurate and faithful reprint of the design of the actual book, right down to the little markings and symbols of the magic circle. The cover is smooth and in a gloss finish with metallic highlights. All the portions of the design which appear in yellow or gold are in fact stamped over with metallic gold so it actually shines and is reflective against the already glossy cover. It's quite the nice touch imitating what would be a gold gilded or embossed book cover in reality.
The sides of the book are printed with a book page design. Since The Clow is actually a box and not a real book, it contains no actual pages of any sort so the sides are merely a printed imitation of a stack of paper(which is realistically more functional too)
Opening up the book, the first thing you're greeted with is a sheet indicating the full listing of Clow Cards included. My ability to read kanji is not very good, so unfortunately I can't discern what the descriptive line beneath each card actually says. Do take note that the order in which the cards are actually arranged does not necessarily follow the order of the list.
The interior cover also has an indentation of a cardboard piece to keep the cards in place, and opposite that is a red cardboard holder with a hollow for the actual cards. It is not a particularly thick holder, but there are notches on the side for you to lift the cards out more easily so you don't tear the holder. It can also be removed completely if you wish.
The entire Book of Clow measures 12 x 21 x 4.2 cm. This is roughly the same dimensions of Moleskine's large sketchbooks but thicker. Or just a little larger than a standard size manga volume in North America(2 cm taller and 1cm wider)
The Clow Cards:
The cards are all encased in a standard paper box. It's not a super tight box like playing cards, so you can remove it with ease without damaging it. The cards measure 16 x 7.1 cm and this is supposed to be the actual 1:1 size of the cards in real life. There was never any indication of the cards' actual measurements in either the manga or anime, but considering the size of these cards in relation to both the hands of a child of Sakura's age as well as a normal adult hand for comparison, this is a pretty realistic size to go on.
The cards are all beautifully printed on very thick and firm cardstock. If I had to guess, I'd say it's anywhere in the 8-10pt range but I could be wrong. What is certain is that they're quite sturdy and firm for simply being cards. Each card is also perfectly laminated over with a matte laminate so there are absolutely no reflections whatsoever, and the cards have a very smooth feel to them.
On the front is the design of each card, as they originally appeared in the Clow. The back is the Clow magic circle as expected. There are no metallic or foil stampings on either side of the card, so all the embellishments are drawn and illustrated directly into the card's design itself.
The matte finish is also very smooth on the cards, but it also means you must be very delicate with them. Matte finishes are very high quality and generally preferred by collectors over gloss because you can see the art instead of reflections, but it's also very prone to grabbing fingerprints and grease. Light scratches also appear more vividly on them than gloss, so you'll need to be careful how you handle them and be sure to wash your hands first if you don't want impurities like finger grease, hand lotions, etc. to smear all over them. Once stuff like that gets on matte finishes, it can almost never be removed and you'll be left with a disgusting smear.
There is one important thing to take note of on these cards: there is absolutely no copyright or legal text printed on them anywhere, whatsoever.(ie. it doesn't say copyright Kodansha/CLAMP 2001 etc. on the back of the card border or something) I personally was quite surprised by this, since pretty much 99% of all merchandise that's released these days have the legal text printed on it somewhere. The legal text is actually printed on the red holder that is holding the deck rather than on the cards themselves, so don't be concerned about having received a bootleg or something if you don't see that on the actual cards. More and more high quality collectibles are being made in a similar manner where the copyrights are placed inconspicuously instead for better appearance, so if you're a cosplayer rejoice!
The one other last thing to note is that this set only contains the original set of 52 Clow cards from the manga. They do not contain any cards introduced later on or any Sakura cards, so do not expect to see The Nameless, The Nothing or The Hope.
Overall these cards are simply amazing. Both in the quality and accuracy, this is probably among the best recreations of fictional items I've seen from any series. Print quality and construction is fantastic, and the size and scale makes it perfect for cosplay.
Even if you're not a fan of CCS, the designs alone are beautiful enough to be part of any collection.
I obtained mine from Hobbysearch but they are now sold out though they might restock later.
Other retailers that carry official products with good service that you can try are Amiami and Animate. If you are searching for it try searching under it's ISBN in books. If you're running your search, look for ISBN 978-0-06-358755-5
The official retail price of this set was 3900 Japanese yen which depending on your country and currency, is around the range of $40 USD(as of the date of this review anyway Feb.2015). EMS shipping(which is express shipping with tracking) from Japan usually ranges around 2500-3000 yen, so if you are trying to procure this from Ebay this should give you an idea of what you can expect and give you something to compare to for inflation values.
Otherwise if you can find an official store to pick this up from, I'd really recommend grabbing it. It's definitely worth it!
NEW Sailor Moon Holy Grail Rainbow Moon Chalice Room Fragrance! More info: http://www.sailormooncollectibles.com/2014/12/16/sailor-moon-holy-grail-rainbow-moon-chalice-room-fragrance/
!! More pretty SM merch! I'm really debating whether or not to get this though. It's gorgeous and I DO really want to pull out my wallet for it, but I'm highly sensitive to scents, especially aritifical. However judging by the size of the crystal interior in comparison to the average size of an adult, it's probably a fair guess that the scented gel inside is roughly the same size as a small sized candle like a tea light so it's highly possible to replace it with one or an air freshener/scented substitute.
I think I'll just get one anyway and experiment to see what I can do in that regards; I'm sure other people are thinking of it to since you'd have to replace the scented part once it wears out.
Sailor Moon Star Locket Proplica Confirmed!!! Details: http://www.sailormooncollectibles.com/2014/10/31/sailor-moon-star-locket-proplica-confirmed-tamashii-nations/
W-wha...! I don't care that I already preordered the Premium Bandai one...I'm going to get this one too!
The Proplica locket is also prettier and more accurate in my opinion. I like that the hinges and the latch on the lid is more inconspicuous, and I feel like the star shape as a whole is nicer too; the points are more prominent. The chain on the Premium Bandai one is much prettier though...but I will likely swap out the chain on both for a nice one of my own.
I hope this one plays music too. A slower, ballad version of Moonlight Densetsu~!
Two lockets and the compact...probably multiple compacts as Proplica makes more...oh dear my poor wallet. I'm so sorry, but I regret nothing!

Ah, but the preorders filled up even faster than the locket!
I wonder if I should just invert my sleep cycle and stay up late everyday...
Out of Sight A short animation produced by a team of three students for a graduation production. Official site --> http://evaty.main.jp/oos/e_info.html *Note: some portions of the website can only be read in Chinese. Written narrative of the film for the visually impaired can be found on Disability Movies --> http://disabilitymovies.com/2010/out-of-sight/
This is probably one of the most beautiful short films I've ever watched. It is an incredibly good and artistic way of offering those of us with sight a bit of understanding as to how individuals who are visually impaired perceive the world.
As the film is composed mostly of music and visuals, there is little to no dialogue to offer a narrative for those who are visually impaired to enjoy, however Disability Movies does offer a detailed description and full narrative of the film, linked above.
Watch it!

Do you know where to buy all of the Japanese Kino books? I live in America, where Kino is non-existent except for the one English translated book. I'd definitely have to import, but do you have any ideas where to buy from?
Sorry it took a while for me to answer. I don’t think I’m the right person for you to ask about this since I don’t live in America and I don’t have much experience purchasing from Japan, though I’ll try to answer to my best knowledge.
From the suggestion on the official website of Dengeki Bunko (Kino’s publisher), you can purchase the books from amazon Japan. You can also try Kinokuniya, as I heard a good deal of people already buying light novels on the site, but long time ago some Kino’s fans also said you can buy Kino raw books directly even from Kinokuniya US stores. Searching around the internet and you might find some instructions of how to buy raw light novels, like this MAL thread.
If any US fans who purchased the Japanese books happen to read this, you can give the anon some advice as well.
A few quick tips and additional info which might be helpful:
Disclaimer: I personally live in Canada where it’s a bit more difficult to get imports since we don’t have anything like a Kinokuniya, but other than that the two most reliable places I’ve found for books is Amazon Japan and CD Japan, so the stores and info listed below should work for you even if you live elsewhere(except Kinokuniya)
If you are living in the US though you are in luck! Some of the Kinokuniya stores DO stock them but they might be sold out. You can always ask the store clerks or order them online, but if you decide to order on Kinokuniya’s online store you must run the search as “キノの旅” Running the search as “kino no tabi” or any other roman characters, including the “The Beautiful World” will either yield the non-desired results or none at all.
Here’s a few quick tips and info I’ve gathered over my years of collecting all the Kino books, particularly with buying on Amazon Japan which might be your most reliable source right now:
It is fully possible to shop here in English if you do not understand Japanese. Parka wrote an excellent buying guide for those who want to order items off amazon.jp but don’t know their way around the site. You can read it here. -> link
The sad thing about it is that shipping costs can get very pricey. The only upside to this is that Amazon.jp only utilizes express shipping services internationally, so you are likely to get your stuff in about a week or less(usually 2-3 days to be honest). Remember to check the shipping rates, you can view it here -> link
As a last little bit of information, if you are able to find a listing for the (almost) full box set of Kino books, I highly recommend purchasing it especially if it is brand new. It is now discontinued and most of the listings for it are used copies, but every so often an “In Stock” listing might popup on Amazon so there’s no harm in keeping it bookmarked.
Prior to the release of the 17th volume, Kino no Tabi vol. 1-16 was available for purchase in a large set. This is the set I am referring to -> link The only catch is that these books have the old cover art, not the new cover art(in case you care about that)
If you buy the set instead of the books individually, you actually save a LOT of money on shipping costs from the additional item fee because it is considered one item, rather than having to pay an extra fee for all 16-17 books individually checked out in your shopping cart.
If you already have a collection of books and just need a few volumes to complete it, try out any of the places the OP mentioned. The retailers in the MAL thread sadly is a liiitle outdated and many of them don’t carry the books anymore or only have a very small listing except for the big box Japanese stores.
I hope that is helpful!
Kino no Tabi volume 18 cover is out!
The novel will be on sale on October 10, 2014.
Thanks Ella for uploading the high resolution version on baka-tsuki.
My copy is on the way, so excited! The annual release of these books is one of the things I look forward to the most out of the year.
If I’m able to, then perhaps I’ll be closer to portraying a true expression of love.

Android phones, housed in flip phone or clamshell form factors instead of the candybar style. Samsung has been the one producing most of these. It's very interesting to see what sort of specs they house and the intended target audience. The upcoming LG Wine Smart is the only one that does not have a dual touch screen due to the intended market, but it looks quite nice and sleek.

Call me an old fashioned sort of gal, but I absoloutely love flip phones and would take that over a candybar style smartphone any day. They are actually still quite popular in areas of asia, and particularly Japan. I was eventually forced into using a smartphone in order to streamline work and have prayed for a decent android to be built in a flip style. It's not likely to ever happen, but I do really hope that we might get one of these in NA someday so I don't actually have to import. /hope

A comic about bullying that made me cry in the office this morning…
if you’ve not already read it, you should.
Really guys, read it please
It is now approximately one year since this pilot was first published, and Koe no Katachi is now an ongoing series in Jump. Bessatsu.(Edit: WHY DO I ALWAYS GET THOSE TWO MIXED UP?! okay probably because I've never actually liked any shounens in Bessatsu...)
I have not yet finished reading it all but it is a truely wonderful story that touches your heart. I encourage all to read, regardless of your age and whether or not you like manga. It's completely worth it!
I haven't actually enjoyed any series in Jump this much since...uh...maybe not since Death Note? erm...besides the point, please do check it out!
Kyudo - japanese archery. Beautiful people, beautiful outfits, flowers. colors and elegance.
That peacock green outfit is so gorgeous~! her hakama is a really fancy one with a rinzu-like pattern too.
Even more impressive is that her muneate is clear instead of opaque so as not to obstruct the beauty of the outfit, but it would still be just as gorgeous even if it was opaque.
I love wafuku~

These are amaaazing~! I made some today and they're incredibly delicious! Recipe link for the avacado one is gone but you can easily google it for several recipe variants. I enjoy it with a sprinkle of cheese or hot sauce on top.
Awesome news for Natsume Yuujinchou fans! Alter is re-releasing their 1/8th scale of Natsume Takashi which was the very first figure in their Altair line, but with new sculpting!
If you compare the new renewal edition to the first edition figure, you can see that they've re-sculpted and re-painted the figure to be visually closer to his anime appearance.(picture on the left is the new renewal edition for 2014, picture on the right is the first edition originally released in 2010)
This is great news for those who missed out on getting it when it was first released, but even if you have the first edition the renewal one is nice enough that it might make you consider getting this one too.
Full figure specs and details can be found on Alter's official site here.
If you're in Japan, you can order or get one in store at Amimi or Animate.
If you are overseas, it's up for preorder at official retailers such as Amiami and Hobbysearch.
So happy right now...after four years someone granted my wish! /joy~~
Heads up! Erik Mana is releasing the Sybil Livida set of cards into his line of Mana Playing cards which is already up for Kickstarter preorders.
The previous decks were super gorgeous, and included the Indigo deck as well as the Zinfandel deck. The new Sylbil decks are of a slightly different enhanced design. They're up for preorder already on Kickstarter(already funded!) so grab yours too. 50k stretch goal tosses in a commemorative coin for all(which based on the quality and design of everything else so far, sounds like it'd be really nice and the primary reason why I'm pimping this thing)
