If the old way the ranks worked was based solely on naming prowess, what could be more powerful than speaking names of things? 

I don’t think it has to do with shaping. Considering the whole creation war with shapers vs namers, I don’t think the university had a mix of naming and shaping. It’s a possibility, but I doubt it. Elodin seems terrified when he thinks Fela has been changing her name, which I think is more a shaping thing than naming thing. 

Naming things is great and wonderful, but what about naming living things? Elodin says it’s nearly impossible to do, but Kvothe does it with Felurian: 

“Her eyes were like four lines of music, clearly penned. My mind was filled with the sudden song of her. I drew a breath and sang it out in four hard notes.”

What if el'the are singers? The Chandrian do not fear namers, they fear singers. They do not go after Elodin or students at the University, they kill a troupe of Edema Ruh singing about them. (The Edema Ruh, who I think were the original namers.) They say they fear the singers. What if things (non-sentient things) have names and living beings have songs?
