I could be much more effective if I didn’t have to delegate to less capable employees and I could oversee things myself. [TEXT  → DON’T ANSWER] You and I both aren’t meant to be locked up.

[TEXT  → Black Knight, Leader of Providence] Thinking in absolutes... like thinking in Black and White. I certainly am looking ahead to our future. The Providence agents are perfectly capable of handling whatever orders you give them. “I know, I know.” Rex already knows the protocol in Providence. White Knight’s decision to accept any of his friends to assist Providence and their situation, at least— it’s a good start. He understands it and knows that he’s a victim of the ‘incident’ well, considering he almost punched Ben on the face when he was one of his alien transformations. Rex was sorta thankful that awkwardness dies down. They became friends afterwards. 

Well, before knowing other monster species from around the world there’s also the existence of aliens, he becomes too confused about both species. Dr. Holiday was generous enough to give him a briefing before meeting the other kids that may be helping during the war.

“Haha, awesome! Okay, so recruits are out in my list.” His eagerness returns. “Okay, I’ll call in Ben or any of the guys as soon as possible! I just hope he wouldn’t be too busy with mission work that much in my free day!”

Well.

 Knight  hoped he didn’t just make the worst decision in his life, inviting more cocky, superpowered teens into Providence. But a headache dealing with them and any property damage was a small price to pay for more firepower.

[ Firepower that brought their own equipment. Equipment that could be studied.  White  knew how to grab an opportunity when he saw one. ]

“How soon is ‘as soon as possible’, assuming none of them are currently busy? In the worst case scenario, could we expect at least one of your friends mobilizing in an emergency?” He crossed his arms. “Could we call upon them for any type of mission? Are any of them prone to gossip?”

     Seemed like someone needed an update.

     She hyped at her own joke. She knew she was far from being Guide material.

“A lab inspection —”  White  paused, a shareholder-winning smile crossing his lips. “In the matter of fact, yes. I do need to look at the lab.”

He straightened his posture, slipping easily into the leader, absolutely-on-official-business persona, as opposed to the leader, absolutely-on-official-business-but-don’t-even-breathe-in-my-direction exterior he had before. It was easier to deal with officials considering supporting Providence, children, and idiots that way. Sometimes a mixture of the three.

“And you’re the perfect fit for the job. I would prefer it if Dexter did not know about this. It’s... similar to when a food critic comes undercover. You understand, right?”  Knight  looked on at the seemingly normal house [ ignoring all the... painted ponies and whatnot ]. “I want to know exactly what he’s capable of.”

Fox smiled awkwardly. "The KND don't recruit teenagers. And....well I'm kinda afraid of space travel so no plumbers." She paused and looked at him sheepishly. "Though Providence was my first choice anyway. I've fought monsters like 10 times my size with just a sword and a blaster gun. Figure I should try and put that skill to good use. But I'd also want to work for someone who knows what they're doing. You seem to have everything under control without breaking a sweat."

“That’s a fair assessment of my tenure—”

Wait.

Was he really going to fall for flattery? [ It had been a while since he was acknowledged for the work he did for Providence, but… ] “Look, kid. You really can’t be seen wearing Providence uniforms while not legally an adult.” He sighed and rubbed his temple. At least the other organizations couldn’t snap her up, but there was always the slim chance that the kid would change her mind.                                                                 [ Maybe that would be better for him. ]

“You can support Providence in other ways, like getting out of Providence’s way when my agents are taking care of a situation. Or donating… ”  Knight  paused, lofty gaze staring at the eager child in front of him. “The Dexlabs and Mandark Industries technology certainly is interesting. If Providence scientists can determine that they’re safe enough for people like you to use, then I’m sure a Providence internship program could be possible.”

I am doing my best to run this place, but I’m only saying it would be more productive if I could actually do something. Computress “step“ forward the decontamination chamber, scanning the room of pure white and pitch shadows remind her of the place were that hardware of her was assembled: aseptic and comfortable.

She think about White Knight looking at her and she need to calm her program by scanning it twice, that man was unpredictable for the lack of informations and Dexter was the double of a pain with his insecurity: ‘Try to take more information by him also try to not upset him with a lot of questions!‘

‘Thanks Dexter, I’m the double insecure right now!‘

The robot now float in front of the White Knight’s desk “I’m sorry for the suddent intrusion White Knight, Dexter’s send his apologies to not being here himself but he had a conference with the others Guides and… a peculiar way to delegate me interpersonal relationship“

Trying to break the ice she smile

“I need to ask few questions and leave Mas… Emh… White Knight”

 White Knight  stood from his seat, reaching out his hand over the desk to shake the android’s in a purely business fashion. It was somewhat redundant, being that they had seen each other through the screens, but it felt fitting. And rude, if he didn’t.

“I’d prefer not to be his guinea pig before our companies are officially partnered.”  Knight  spoke in a low voice. He had no doubts that Computress was filled to the brim with sensors to record this interaction. “But I’ll permit you to ask 'a few’ questions.”

His handshake is tight and resolute, with hints of his power from before he was Providence’s leader, gunmetal grey eyes staring through Computress’ green.

“I hope you understand that I’m not obligated to answer those questions, however.”

“Hey, even Doc recommends it! I wouldn’t work overnight or without a rest!” Rex reasons out. The boy salutes in mutual understanding. “Aye, aye sir!” He says, imitating the accent of a pirate that he used to watch on early mornings.

A delighted look is shown on Rex’s face as he almost jumped in eagerness. “Would I? Yes! I know a few others that are interested!”  He says, he knows some recruits are interested but he started to go in thinking mode again. 

“Would you like to let me call for Ben or anyone from the recruits? Maybe he might be happy about it. Trust me, there are others that wanted to help this organization out!” 

No work overnight or without rest. Kid didn’t know how lucky he was.

“None of the recruits, they seem —” [ Somewhat uncontrollable. ] “ — busy. Any of your friends falling under ‘superpowered teenager’ is fine.”

Did it make him look desperate? He glanced at Rex’s puppy-like expression and hoped he was too busy imagining ‘hanging out’ with his friends to think about the fate of Providence. Exhaling,  Knight  sorely wished he could rub his temples. “We don’t exactly need the help,” he lied, “But it would be appreciated.”

“They are your responsibility, Rex, if you bring them along. What they are volunteering for is work, not another chance to talk.”

      “And how is that research division going, with your dwindling funds and the increased danger?”

   She doesn’t seem all that bothered by the shift in his expression, crossing her arms and leaning back. Sure, hostility is to be expected, and maybe a little deserved. But now he’s just being paranoid.

         “I am your Consortium contact,“ she concedes, “but that also means they take me at my word. Unlike you, I have given them no reason to distrust me, especially with all their eyes on you.“      A pause, and she lowers her tone, something genuine slipping through the cracks.

                “I’m not any happier with them breathing down my neck than you are.“

That voice. It had been years, buried under memories good and bad, but he thought he’d never hear it again. Especially attached to a sentence displaying [ ugh ] camaraderie. It was too enticing, the thought of being able to trust somebody again.

“It’s... adequate.”

All the scientists specializing in xenobiology or anything remotely related to Planet Fusion were already working in that field — in Dexlabs, in Mandark Industries, in whatever other offshoot companies were at the forefront of the war — which left Providence with what it already had.

Not that he was dissatisfied with his employees [ Dr. Holiday being soft for Rex notwithstanding ], just... they weren’t meant for this. They weren’t meant to look into magical artifacts or imaginary friends to push back an extraterrestrial threat.

“It is, however, difficult to turn away offers of help.”

    Every instinct Black has is telling her to either fight or flee, looking at this… this damn thing trying to pass itself off as White, wearing his face and mimicking his voice. Locked in here, though, she can do nothing but ball her fists out of view of the camera and dig her nails in.

                   “I don’t need a celebration.”    She doesn’t need this job either. What she needs is to get out of here and get as far from the Consortium as possible, and as far away from him as possible.            — Of course they’d end up sending White Knight right to her door instead.

       “What are you really here for?”

“The Consortium sent me. They are my boss, as you know.”  The smile doesn’t disappear from his face, but it falls to the slightest smirk.  Knight  had been told that always grinning with his sharp canines showing was off-putting. “They’re your boss too, now. Or should I say, ‘again’?”

“Maybe they were always your boss, and you deluded yourself into thinking otherwise.” He laughs, a joke understood by no-one but the mass that was himself.

And as quickly as the laughter came, it melted into the dull professionalism that was hammered into him for the entirety of his life.

“The celebration was their idea. I’m here as an extension of their will. It would be unsightly to refuse a gift again, Black Knight.”

Computress touch the right button on her chest with a fluid movement and a little traslucent patina disappear in no time. After that she glance at the camera

“I chose in that way Master White Knight…”

“I learned the most of the Humans had a peculiar fear of Robots who don’t respect them with appellation. They became hostile and don’t let me approach them, maybe because I’m an A.I. …” said the blue robot with pride.

She liked the idea of a human who try to understand her way of talking, no one pay attenction at it. People always think it was in her source code like a program installed by Dexter or something like that; they were wrong! She decided and learn through expiriences with recruits.

Computress admit with whitness “This doesn’t mean I like it also it’s efficent and respectful, people respond nicely at this attitude of servility so I continued in this way. If Master White don’t like it I can change with a more confidential ‘Mister’”

Chose. Right. Just like how he chose to be Providence’s leader.  Knight  didn’t outwardly show his apprehension, instead straightening himself and mentally preparing himself for any future negotiations.

“Calling me ‘White Knight’ is fine.” That was his name after all; maybe not the one he was given at birth, but he had used it for so long that is was embedded into his being. Mister Knight would feel too alien, too uncomfortable. It could be a tactic to catch him off-guard. Just like Dexlabs sending in a servant bot instead of a spokesperson. “So the others you have interacted with are welcoming of that attitude...? I suppose in other circumstances that is acceptable.”

Circumstances like interacting with it to get a mission or receive a reward. Telling it to take notes. Anything other than representing a major company to make a fool of the other party.

 Knight  crossed his legs, expression cold. “The decontamination procedure is over. You may enter.”

 “Uh, no. It’s because I’m assigned to two places. Evo Activity in Bravo Beach and Orchid Bay are starting to get out of control ever since they fused at the beginning.” If Rex may get a fear, it may be him losing himself in a mission and failing everyone. Curing them may tricky. He wished Holiday has a solid solution to this… war. He seemed quite surprised by White Knight’s concern when he looked. It made him reflect on some things lately.

“I’m also having breaks in the weekends actually. There are other kids willing to take my place if I’m not around.” Aside from beating Evos and going on missions, he really wanted to enjoy free time too while he wanted to hangout with Lapis or binge watching his favorite shows.

“Being able to take those breaks is...”  A luxury.  White  bit his lip, cutting back a look of envy. “Allow me to rephrase that: just don’t pass out in one of our meetings.”

In a brief, fleeting thought, he wondered what Rex did on his own. From his time at Providence, all  Knight  got was that he sneaked out to get junk food or visit Noah. Given that Noah wasn’t in this area, and going to the nearest Burger Frenzy every weekend would get tiring [ not that he knew personally ]...

At least one of them could get allies in the Fusion war. That was a useful tool.

“Would any of your friends be interesting in assisting Providence?”
