Hi folks! If you've paid attention, you probably knew this was coming eventually, as ive hinted at it a few times. Abut a year and a half ago I started working on a project and sharing snippets here and there. I don't know if we'll ever get a music video for any Eden songs, but at the very least, i can offer my own interpretation of what it might look like. Its intentionally left a bit rough in spots, but its also the most ambitious project I've ever undertaken and I'm fucking proud of it. Enjoy! :)
i think what's helped me better understand sleep token as a whole is that it's a very experimental project. like, incredibly so for the genre it's marketed itself as: there are more artists now breaking out of the conventions of heavy metal but sleep token gets fucking weird with it.
and by that i mean not just the pacing or the layout, but the literal noises they utilize. there is foley work integrated into all of TMBTE that paints each song as a physical space you can step into, from the cafe chatter in aqua regia to the birds of paradise twittering at the beginning of TMBTE.
and keeping that in mind in brings me back to this one fundamental fact: vessel is a nerd. a massive, gargantuan, millenial nerd. he sees music not just as something you feel but an actual environment you can explore, a world unto itself. he's passionate about so many different things and he explores those through song, even when the actual content of the lyrics is deeply personal.
which has led me to believe that the lore is actually a vehicle: it's just present enough to incentivize other nerds to dig a little deeper and uncover something new about the world around them. without saying anything outright, vessel's gone look, see this? isn't this cool?
and for the people that care enough to look close, they see it. they learn something new about alchemy and whale falls and point nemo. it facilitates learning in the best way possible, through mystery and intrigue, and people feel rewarded for putting in effort within the framework of a band they love. that's pretty fucking awesome.
and i think it says something that in TPWBYT, an album depicting what might be the lowest points of vessel's life, he still had these facts tucked away inside the album. in the trenches of his mental health, he still saw beauty in the world he wanted others to appreciate, too.
so what's the point of this long winded ramble? there isn't one, just as there ultimately isn't a point to the lore -- it might just be there to present concepts that occupy vessel's mind and now occupy ours. unless the comic book proves otherwise, sleep token is going to remain a concept heavy band with no easy, definable story, and that's fine.
