was looking for something else in the drafts and found this from 2017, dont know if it ever saw the light of day so here it is i havent tried to edit it
No limo. That was a good sign. Not that the sleek electric car Naveen drove was that much less impressive. Fit for a prince, of course. She smiled when he opened the door for her. It wasn’t any more elaborate than any other time he had driven her to his penthouse. They held hands, he asked about work, and brought her hand to his lips while they waited at a red light. The lack of pomp and circumstance was making her suspicious.
“I will admit I was considering adopting a dog, or bringing you to pick one out.” Naveen laughed lightly, making her heart flutter, she didn’t let it on and instead huffed at him. He glanced at her, letting her catch the light in his eyes before they returned to the road. “But,” And he stressed the but, “I realized you have neither the time or the room, and even if we were to ignore the lack of green space that I have, it would not make a lot of sense for me to keep your present so far away from you.”
“You didn’t have to get me anything, Naveen. And you definitely don’t need to get me a dog.”
“Of course I had to get you something.” Naveen scoffed like he had never heard something more ridiculous. “It is your birthday.”
“I know,” Allie smiled. “I did get the one hundred cake emojis this morning.”
“It was the least I could do.” He paused and squeezed her hand, his voice and whole façade dropping, momentarily, to something pitifully apologetic.
“I am sorry again I was not there to ring in your birthday as soon as you woke up.” There was a little pang in her heart as there had been that morning with no warm arms reaching for her.
“Now, see, if I had gotten you a dog you would have has someone there to kiss you this morning.” Someone better behaved, who would let her get to work, which he had cited in his morning texts as part of the reason he was not there.
“Naveen, there better not be a dog at your place.”
He laughed again at her stern voice.
As late as it was, Naveen having had to wait for the bakery to close before stealing it’s boss away, meant there was hardly anyone left in the towering Mahajan building to slow the progress of the elevator, and the two were free to be as mushy as they both (quietly and not so quietly) wanted. Naveen leaned languidly against the wall, pulling Allie against him, willing her to shrug off the feeling of work and melt into him instead, though she hardly needed extra motivation.
“You know, we are going to count tomorrow morning as your birthday as well.”
“So I can make up for this morning.” He nodded and put on that charming sing song voice, pulling at the syllables of each suggestion as he swayed from side to side. “You can sleep in, and I will make you breakfast, and I will not have to try very hard to keep you from leaving.”
He wouldn’t have to try at all. Even there, in the elevator, she was his, and without a bakery to prep she could revel in being his.
Thankfully, the cute excitable mess of curly hair that met them when the elevator doors opened was Ralphie, and not an impulsively adopted puppy. A balloon bouquet, and a long-stemmed daisy, were thrust towards her, along with the biggest smile on that little face as he practically yelled Happy Birthday. Allie laughed, handing the gifts to Naveen so she could pick Ralphie up in a big hug as she thanked him.
“Did you pick these out just for me?”
“Mhmm! And I made a card!” Naveen held up the balloon bouquet, and sure enough, taped to the weight was a card.
Once Allie took the card and the daisy, Naveen let the bouquet sink to the floor, so he could hug Ralphie too, but it was apparent he was more interested in watching Allie read the card. Naveen couldn’t blame him.
Ralphie moved to be beside her, and she tilted the card so he could see. He pointed.
“That’s me, and that’s you, and that’s my brother.” Three figures were in the middle of the card, surrounded by circles.
“And what fun thing are we doing together?”
“Making, um, cookies. Like when I got to come to, um, your work. Remember?”
“Of course I remember, I always remember having fun with you.”
Naveen let them talk, or rather let Ralphie talk, disappearing into the bathroom, and returning with a vase, for the daisy, taking it from Allie and placing it on the kitchen island. Ralphie hadn't seen her in a week or better so he had plenty of things to say, and Naveen would have let him go on a little longer if he hadn't started talking about the "other secret thing" he helped with, that Naveen asked him not to mention. With a little start, Naveen patted his shoulder and interrupted.
“Alright, Ralphie, I promised you could stay up until we came home but it is time for bed now, no?”
As well behaved as he was there was no way Ralphie wouldn’t at least make a big show of pouting about bedtime, averting his brothers look and sighing.
“Do you want us to come in the elevator with you?”
And so they went, down a floor to the main residence, saying hello to Mr. and Mrs. Mahajan as they delivered Ralphie, promising more time together later tomorrow. Even though the ride back up was near instantaneous, Naveen pulled his girlfriend in for a kiss.
The door was locked, and they had made their way to the bedroom where the drawer with a few items of Allie’s clothes sitting open. She wouldn’t let Naveen fill it for her, for a few reasons, but if she tried to fill it what would be left at her apartment would be laughable. Not to mention that when she was here, she hardly needed clothes at all. This was illustrated by her boyfriend’s arms slinking around her waist as soon as she had taken her work shirt off. With his chin on her shoulder like that she couldn’t put on the cozy shirt she had grabbed, but between the soft kisses and the tickle of his curls, she wasn’t going to complain.
"I missed you today." Warm breath pressed those words into her shoulder and like before he swayed gently.
"And I missed you, Naveen." Abandoning the shirt, she turned around in his arms to face him. She smoothed her hands up from where his arms were around her to push through his hair.
"Happy birthday, my love." His kiss was briefer than she would expect from their current position. Before she could thank him, he whined and leaned his forehead against her shoulder. "I was hoping to give you a gift and offer you dinner and cake but you are just too irresistible and now I do not want to let go."
Allie huffed a laugh, kissing his temple.
"You know you're the only present I need."
That only made him whine more. They had had similar interactions every few days leading up to today.
"Let me finish changing then, and we can do dinner and cake. "
Another sorry whine from that very regal prince, but this time he lifted his head, kissed her again, and dutifully dropped his hands. It took her a second to do the same.
She was surprised again at the relative lack of opulence over the dinner table. It was still a fancy dinner in a penthouse suite, the wine probably costing more than she spent on wine in multiple years, but it was clear it was of Naveen's own doing; there was nothing waiting on a silver platter. As Naveen escorted her to the table he grabbed the vase with Ralphie's daisy so it could join the candles he had set up on one side. He pulled out her chair for her like a true gentlemen, kissing her ear when she was seated, lighting the candles, and then retreating further into the kitchen. She watched him trace his slender finger over his phone, transmitting a message of romance to the lights and speakers around the room. On one side of the space her smile shone through the now dim lights and in return, on the other, she could see his eyes sparkle. He had only turned towards her for a moment though, enough to make both of their hearts skip a simultaneous beat, and he had turned his back to her again. When he returned it was with dinner.
"I wanted to try and make everything from scratch," He confessed with a hint of anxiety, twirling fettuccine on his fork. "But the sauce alone proved too much for me, and I had to enlist Ralphie's help… as he was eager to tell you before I interrupted him."
"I think, from scratch, I would need your help."
Ralphie was a talented little chef already and she would be sure to tell him his alfredo sauce was delicious, while Naveen had cooked the salmon in it much better than he had worried it would. She assured him it all tasted wonderful, and he coyly hinted that there was something he was even more proud of as he smiled at her over his wine.
Sure enough, when he took her empty plate it was replaced with a plate of little pastries with apple slices rolled to look like roses surrounding a cake just big enough for the two of them. Instead of taking his seat he stayed beside her, pulling a full bouquet of real roses (which had been hidden in the fridge with the dessert) from behind his back as well.
So this is why he wasn't adamant about hanging on to her for once. She grabbed his face and pulled him down for a kiss, and he laughed.
"Wait until you have tried them, maybe they are actually terrible."
She scoffed and kissed him again.
The apple roses were warm and sweet, and the effort he had put into everything was
Something something maybe giving her a piece of jewellery or something small and then they make their way to the bedroom
Their tradition of doing dishes together and blowing clumps of bubbles at each other was abandonded for the night, the duty being taken over by a sleek modern dishwasher made to look like part of the cabinets.
[[something something naveen picking her up]] assuring her it was more than a shame she had had to work during her birthday and he was not going to allow any more work her way. And even before she was placed gently onto that luxurious bed, she was thankful. She was even more thankful when Naveens soft lips pressed against hers. Her arms found their place around his shoulders, ready to pull him down with her, but he resisted.
"You think I have no more gifts to give you?"
"No, but I think I would like to kiss my boyfriend for more than ten seconds on my birthday."
She could feel his laugh against her cheek as he offered another quick kiss before stepping away from the bed. When he reached into his (cavernous) closet at least she had the chance to stare at his butt. Tucked to the side, just behind the door, he grabbed a medium sized box with a very fancy looking bow. She sat up so he cold place it in her lap.
"No air holes," She ran her hand over the top of the box, smiling at him. "Not a dog."
He was apparently too excited to continue the joke, scooching closer and resting his head on her shoulder.
Allie kissed his temple, considering thanking him now, but she /was/ curious.
The bow had just been taped to the top, though she wouldn't have put it past him to have learned how to wrap things so beautifully; maybe celebrities sent big thank you gifts a lot. She pulled at the folds to not ruin the paper, and Naveen was surprisingly patient as she did.
