I photographed a Green Bay Packers game yesterday for ESPN the Magazine and then I made a gif... because Clay Matthews is just so metal.
Golf is a sport with hazards (did you see what I did there?), but a course that has a search and rescue team standing by is out of the ordinary. This is a shoot I recently did for ESPN the Magazine on the frozen bay on Lake Erie in Erie, Pennsylvania at the Joe Root Frostbite Open. By retinas got burned but it was still fun. And rolling around in the snow on a lake shooting gold with a medium format camera is, well, as crazy as playing golf on a frozen lake.
When The New York Times called and asked if I was interested in going up north to cranberry country in Wisconsin, I didn't even hesitate. Since I moved to Wisconsin, I've been hoping and waiting for the opportunity to photographer a cranberry bog. So on a chilly windy day in late October, I packed up the Pentax 645D and luckily the farmers had some waders for me when I got there. Nothing like the feeling of 100,000lb of cranberries pushing you forward in a hip-deep bog. The story ran on Thanksgiving day. I even made my Thanksgiving day cranberry sauce from fresh cranberries from this very bog. It's nice to know where your food comes from.
A couple of weeks ago I went down to Chicago's Soldier Field for ESPN the Magazine to shoot the biggest rugby match in USA Rugby history against the New Zealand All Blacks, the best rugby side in history. I will admit to know very little about rugby before shooting this and I will only admit to know a little more after shooting this. But it was a lot of fun to see a sold-out crowd of 61,500 rugby crazed fans watch the US get, unsurprisingly, obliterated by New Zealand.
Here's a handful of my favorites. And an online gallery by ESPN- and a nice big double pager in the print magazine out now- http://espn.go.com/espn/photos/gallery/_/id/11816568/image/1/in-middle-maul-rugby-america
I shot the Tug of War World Championships recently.

These are a few of my favorite photos from a shoot I did with Bontrager/Trek Bicycles for their Fall/Winter 2014 Bontrager lookbook. We shot up in the Wisconsin Northwood on a wonderfully rainy day.
Check out the new lookbook here- http://issuu.com/trekbicycle/docs/bontrager_apparel_lookbook2
This was a shoot I did for Dwell Magazine in Kansas City, Missouri. These are some of my favorite photos that weren't published in the Nov. 2014 issue that is now out.

Every year Hayward, Wisconsin holds the Lumberjack World Championships, a super cool and fun event comprised of different timber-sport disciplines, like the springboard chop and the log roll and the hot saw race. Pretty fun stuff with some pretty hearty athletes. More on my website- http://www.narayanmahon.com/The-Lumberjacks
USA Today called me and asked if I wanted to photograph Paul Ryan, the Wisconsin Congressman and former Vice-Presidential candidate. I said yes. I thought it would be a good shoot to try out the Pentax 645D... and I was right.
The New Teacher Project had me back this summer to shoot their Pre-Service Training of new teachers in Fort Worth, Texas and Charlotte, NC. It was some good old fashion hot and sweaty summer school fun.
This was a shoot I did for CWT, a joint publication from AMVAC Chemicals and the United Potato Growers of America. The farms I shot were in Wisconsin and Oregon. It was very educational and learning new things is among my favorite parts of a shoot... that and making good photos!
Yeah, I did a little dance party all the way from the mailbox to the house when my new cover for Dwell Magazine arrived. No shame. I photographed the Brogan home and family last September in the beautiful Door County, Wisconsin. It was a wonderful shoot with wonderful people and wonderful food and everything was absolutely wonderful! This brings my record to two for two on Dwell covers. And while I love all my children equally, I like this cover more than my first.
ESPN the Magazine said hey Narayan, how would you like go up to northern Wisconsin in the dead of winter to shoot this really great baseball story. I looked at the weather forecast and it was going to be a balmy -5 and thought, well how about Spring Training in Arizona? So I said Hell Yeah! And I hung out with the jovial Mike Jirschele for a couple of days with learned about George Brett shitting his pants. I also took some photos and even shot this video- http://espn.go.com/video/clip?id=10591212

I wandered up north to Cable and Hayward Wisconsin for ESPN the Magazine to shoot the famed, fabled and frostbitten American Birkebeiner, which now celebrates 41 years of pain and suffering. Check out the current issue of ESPN Magazine to see it in print.
Dreaming of a Green and Gold Christmas? I shot Christmas day at Lambeau Field in Green Bay, shooting Packers fans dressed for the occasion for ESPN the Magazine Oh what fun we had! Happy holidays!
The Field Riders. Shot on assignment for ESPN the Magazine at the 2013 Cyclocross World Championships.
