I’ve been reading through it little by little. I’d love to put much more detail into this sketch series, but there just isn’t enough time...

And while rereading it, I realized something: even though Bart says he would do anything for Kitty, the first time around he actually refused her request. After all, with just Kitty and Bart, they had zero chance of winning. However, once Staff and Nathaniel entered the picture, he ultimately agreed to cooperate. In other words, it means he believed that with Nathaniel and Staff, they might actually be able to win or at least that it wouldn’t end in a meaningless death. Realizing that again made me appreciate it even more. These are the thoughts of a BertNat shipper, hehe.

Edith to the fanfiction "Bet?"

This is an alternative world without magic, where all the characters of the Trilogy are university students. At the beginning of the fanfiction, Nathaniel loses an ber with Kitty and her friends: they set a terrible task for Nathaniel: "to confess his love to the person they choose".

Of course, the subject of the joke was Bartimaeus (in the story, Nat and Bart have a strained relationship at college).

So, Nathaniel walks into the classroom with a bouquet of flowers and, with a look of contempt on his face, says what he was asked to say (and only a fool wouldn't understand what was going on).

However, while everyone was laughing, Bartimeus suddenly… agreed.

At first, Nathaniel thinks that Bartimaeus has realized that Nat has lost the bet and just decided to make fun of him by supporting the joke. However, it turns out that it is not that simple.

Bartimaeus needs help and the fact that Nat has lost the bet comes in handy. He offers Nat a deal: under the guise of them dating, they will attend a college event together, and at night, break into the teachers' room at night and steal something Bartimaeus needs from Jessica Whitwell. In exchange, Bartimeus will help Nathaniel hack into the laptop of Simon Lovelace (Nathaniel's dean) to fix his grades. Nathaniel has a very big problem with Professor Lovelace and is forced to agree. Now, while the entire college is wondering if Bart and Nat are dating, the two of them are hatching a plan to break into the teachers' lounge without getting caught... Well, who knows where this bet will lead them?

My favorite scene in the entirety of Bartimaeus is when Kitty summons Bart for the first time to ask him to be her ally in the revolution against the magicians for a world where spirits and humans can possibly live and fight alongside each other, where no one would ever be oppressed again.

And he says no. Because no matter how much he likes and takes interest in humans he's not willing to risk his life for those who have never done anything for him apart from putting him through endless suffering.

Oh but there was one. A person whose form Bartimaeus has been wearing for more than 2 centuries now. Ptolemy.

And something snaps inside him. Just the sound of that name had awakened the voice of a boy who has been gone for 2000 years. One who's remembered by one living creature.

Kitty said that name so casually, she just took it from a book, like all other magicians who search for new spirits to summon. She had no idea how much weight this name holds until she hears this person talking to her through Bartimaeus' memories. The voice so powerful it makes reality collapse around her.

And then everything disappears. This boy stands in a pentacle in front of her, only it's not Ptolemy, it's Bartimaeus, his eyes filled with grief. A name holds a lot of power, be it human name or spirit's. And you can't say it so carelessly.

He is not going to help her. Her name doesn't hold any weight for him. And Bartimaeus doesn't want that to change. His burden is heavy enough as it is.

He probably said to himself as he disappeared.
