Calling Orphan Black fans: What was the thing on Saturday that people were supposed to DVR? I don't think we got it here and I haven't really seen any mentions on Tumblr.
For anyone (still) interested in reading my fanfics, some of the locations have changed. Archives closed, I'm also at Dreamwidth, etc. So if you're interested, follow Fictress on Twitter. It's only fanfic announcements, so you don't have to worry about listening to me ramble.
Looking for beta readers
I'm looking for beta readers for original writing (i.e., not fanfic). Any recommendations for sites? I'd rather do a peer/community beta read than a paid/professional one for multiple reasons, and I'm happy to beta read in exchange.
It was one of my worst sessions ever in terms of planning, but I got through it and I wrote every day. Now I just need to remember how crappy it felt so I don't go into July similiarly unprepared.
Looking for a pillowfort.io code
I wasn't able to support the IndieGoGo for pillowfort.io at the outset, so I don't have a beta code. However, if someone has an extra, I'd be happy to trade a reasonably sized fic (e.g., don't ask for a 50,000 word story when you were able to get a code for $5) for an extra code. If you're following me, you probably know what I will and will not write, but if in doubt, ask. Danke!
vampire-diaries.net is closing
Just a reminder to people in the Vampire Diaries (books and/or TV) fandom that vampire-diaries.net will be closing soon. If you have fanfic posted in the archive, make sure you have it saved to your own devices and/or posted elsewhere. If you have a favourite author in the archive, send them a message to find out where they'll be posting their work in the future.
Looking for misophonia resources
I need to find some printed (or printable) resources about misophonia for family members without internet access. Any recommendations, Tumblr?
I love this book. I’ve loved it since @brennayovanoff started writing it and I loved it as I was paging through it now. I’d love it even if I didn’t know Brenna.Â
But I do and so I can ask for an advanced review copy to give away on the blog. I’ve sketched in it and now LET’S HAVE A CONTEST. All you have to do to enter is reblog this post before 9 PM EST on 2/1, and Brenna will pick one of the reblogs (it’s also running on Twitter) to win. It’s open internationally, and the only thing that’ll disqualify you is if you enter more than once on Twitter/ once on Tumblr (that’s twice total if you have both social media accounts which I realize not everyone does and makes this inherently not fair but that’s life I’m afraid).
I’m so excited for you guys to love this novel, too.
Devil's Playground forum is closing
The Devil's Playground is closing at the end of January 2015. I posted spoilers/info for the ghostwritten Vampire Diaries novels there, so if you want to keep any of that info, go and copy it soon.
I was tagged by the lovely bloodandholocene. Regrettably, I'm a bad candidate for the music shuffle memes, for two main reasons: 1) I don't have a working mp3 player. It died years ago and I'm not really an Apple fan, so I've been searching (in vain, as you've guessed) for an alternative. 2) I don't really make playlists on my computer either. I just tend to flip between folders until I find what I want. That said, I'll just list the 10 songs I've been listening to the most as of late, in no particular order. 1. Tiga - Down In It (nine inch nails cover) 2. MGMT - Kids 3. IAMX - After Every Party I Die 4. Editors - I Want a Forest 5. Jacqueline (Jack) Irvine (?) - Alarmed 6. E.S. Posthumus - Nara 7. The Killgirls - Teeth and Fur 8. Depeche Mode - Ghost 9. Charlie Sexton Sextet - Wishing Tree 10. M.I.A. - Bad Girls Tagging: Uh... whoever would like to do it.
The Vampire Diaries: The Salvation: Unmasked SPOILERS
If you're interested in spoilers for The Vampire Diaries: The Salvation: Unmasked, go to this thread. I'll be posting brief chapter summaries with info about ALL the characters, not just Elena, Bonnie, and Damon. Obvious warning is obvious: There will be information from Unmasked in that thread. If you don't want to be spoiled, DON'T GO.
On Evensong and the use of "Originals"
I haven't read L.J. Smith's Evensong stories (not available in Canada, etc.), but I've seen reviews that complain about her usage of "Originals", saying that it's merging the show and the books.
Not so. Dark Reunion, which was originally published in 1992, referred to Klaus both as an "Original" and as an "Old One".
Dark Reunion, chapter 10: "Get him? You're nuts!" Tyler burst into ugly laughter, and Matt tightened the arm around his throat. "Hey, choke me all you want; it's still the truth. He told me he's one of the Old Ones, one of the Originals, whatever that means. He said he's been making vampires since before the pyramids. He said he's made a bargain with the devil. You could stick a stake in his heart and it wouldn't do anything. You can't kill him. The laughter became uncontrolled.
Things I hate about Tumblr
"I don’t care who you are or what kind of blog you have. This should always be reblogged." (And variations thereof.) Reblog whatever the hell you want. DO NOT tell other people what they should have on their blog. Their blog, their business. Simple as that. This cheap passive bullying is annoying. You have no right to cast judgement on what someone else does or does not post, because you don't know why they are or are not posting it.
Has anyone calculated the run time of Orphan Black and then figured out how long Tatiana Maslany is on screen? I'm also curious as to how much time/ how many scenes she has with two or more clones involved. Thanks!
The Vampire Diaries: The Salvation: Unspoken spoilers
If you want spoilers for The Vampire Diaries: The Salvation: Unspoken, I'm posting some in this thread. OBVIOUS SPOILER WARNING IS OBVIOUS. I try to say a bit about each character, because frankly, not all of us give a damn about Elena, Elena/Damon, or Bonnie/Damon, you know?
Orphan Black ficlet: The Doctor Is In
Title: The Doctor Is In Spoilers: Orphan Black Word count: 747 Disclaimers: I don't own the rights to any of Orphan Black. I don't normally write fanfic for TV shows, so I know this will probably be really stilted. The "moral terror" exchange at the end is quoted from Ginger Snaps: Unleashed, which also features the fabulous Tatiana Maslany. Also available at: pithia @ livejournal Summary: Dr. Zell thought he knew everything about the clone project. He was wrong.
The darkness wasn't absolute. Light played on the edges of Dr. Zell's mindscape, and he tried to move towards it, but thick ropes bound him to something by the shoulders, waist, and ankles. He could hear muffled shouting and the occasional ring of a doorbell. Halloween already? he thought, wondering if his captivity might be some stupid fraternity prank. He'd been spending so much time in the lab lately that he didn't know where October had gone.
"Sarah? Maybe you shouldn't be here when the doctor wakes up." It was a feminine voice, smooth and cultured, very close to his left ear. "You're just going to fly off the handle. Why don’t you go upstairs and hand out the candy, and Alison can come help with the interrogation? You can be . . . like Punk Alison or something."
"Seriously, Cos? Need I remind you what Alison did to her own husband—with a glue gun?" Another female voice—English, or perhaps Australian. But while the first speaker sounded calm and collected, this one sounded strained, hiding fear behind bluster. "I'll be fine. Just wake him up."
The distinctive odour of smelling salts stung his nose and the doctor flinched. "What in the wor—oh god." The blood drained from the man's face as he looked back and forth between the two women. "They didn't stop. They—they said they'd stop. They did it again."
The two women stood in front of him, and to an untrained eye at a fleeting glance, they might have seemed different enough. A casual bystander might mistake them for twins. But Dr. Zell had been trained to see the similarities, to work ratios of forehead to nose and shoulders to hips in his head, and while the two had obvious differences, the truth was undeniable: more clones had been created.
"Hold up. What do you mean by again?" The louder woman's anxiety morphed into proper anger and she pushed his chair against a wall, making him wince. "Who are 'they'? Where are they? Why are they doing this?"
"Sarah." The second clone gently pushed the angry one away and crouched in front of his chair. "Dr. Zell. My name is Cosima; this is Sarah." She gestured at the first clone, who started pacing. "I'm sorry things happened this way. We're just looking for some answers. I'm guessing you know what we are. Do you know . . . why we are? Who made us?"
"I thought they stopped," the doctor muttered. "I swear. They shut down the labs. I was there when they burned the files."
Cosima straightened up, her eyes stormy. Dr. Zell knew that look all too well: All scientists wore it at some point in their career, the mixture of clinical curiosity and moral dismay. "So you're saying there were clones made before us?"
Dr. Zell shut his eyes. Looking upon the two identical women was too upsetting. "It was wonderful and horrible all at once. The first batch started out so well, so strong, but then they started getting sick. . . ." He slumped as much as his restraints would allow. "Dr. Perkins treated them worse than lab rats. Late at night, in secret chambers, he carried out his reign of moral terror."
"Isn't that mortal terror?" Dr. Zell looked up to see a third clone, more prim and proper than the other two, look in on the interrogation from the doorway. He had no doubts that this small but immaculate room belonged to her.
He shut his eyes again, wishing for the elusive absolute darkness. Instead, his mind fed him images of a dozen identical pairs of anguished eyes, echoes of a dozen eerily similar screams. Bodies strapped to beds, tubes threading in and out of their flesh like Celtic knots. Women who had never had the opportunities of these three, to have lives outside of a lab, where their tongues spoke different languages and they could choose what images and experience to feed into their brains. "No," he said softly, his admission nearly drowned out by the doorbell and a loud bellow of Trick or Treat! "You can untie me. I won't run. If I could trouble you for a cup of tea, I'll tell you everything I know."
The clone in the doorway looked sceptical, but at slight nods from the other two, she nodded in kind. "I only have Earl Grey," she replied stiffly on her way out. "It's not grocery week."
So I'm low on Camp NaNoWriMo ideas again. If you have LJS fic requests, let me know? Fair warning: I will not write Damon/Bonnie (VD) or Ash/Mary-Lynnette (NW). Those are my two least favourite couples in LJSdom.
