So, I suffer from intense self loathing thoughts due to low self esteem, depression, anxiety—I’ve got PTSD, a mood disorder, the whole nine yards. I frequently tear myself apart with thoughts about how much I suck, how I shouldn’t try to be creative, or try to make friends, because I’m worthless. Sometimes I even tell myself that I shouldn’t exist.

But the fact is this is all bullshit.

Here’s what I’ve started doing: I think of all those depressive, hateful, cruel, self-loathing thoughts as anon hate. Yes. I imagine it as literally someone using the anonymous ask function to tear me down and I imagine myself responding to it with sass and a whole shit-ton of self confidence. If that’s hard to imagine sometimes, I think of someone I admire doing it.

Like so:

BURN.

Look at that shit. That is often what my thoughts sound like, and I’m sure many other people experience the same thing. Now look at the response. Doesn’t it feel fucking awesome to just flip off someone who degraded you for no reason? Isn’t it hilarious to think up sassy, fabulous responses to assholes? It’s such a great feeling to realize that your self-loathing thoughts are not any truer than cowardly, unnecessarily cruel anonymous hate.

How would you feel if someone said what you say about yourself to one of your friends? Man, I would fucking take them down. Or at the very least, I would make sure the victim of these awful attacks knows that these things are baseless and stupid.

Depression makes us question our own self worth. It makes us degrade ourselves and worst of all, it makes us believe all the shitty things we tell ourselves are true.

Please recognize that this is part of the disease. It is not your fault.

I hope this helps someone else out there, because it sure as hell as helps me. Please take care of yourselves, everyone. ♥

Really? Really.

First of all: didn’t you learn how to balance a checkbook when you learned basic arithmetic? Add up all your expenses. Subtract it from how much money you have. There, your checkbook is balanced. Let’s move on.

Second of all: how well do you think society would run without engineers and chemists and accountants and physicists? And bankers and economists and statisticians and computer programmers? And surgeons and data analysts and the people who keep satellites up in the air? And everyone else with a job that requires an understanding of numbers beyond an eighth grade level? Does that sound like a fun society to live in? Because to me, that sounds like the Dark Ages.

"But I don’t want to do any of those things!"

1. Good for you. Truly. I hope you find your math-free path through life that gives you fulfillment and happiness. But then we need other people to do those things, and when do you propose they learn about numbers? College? By college, they need to be diving into calculus at least if they want to enter the workforce before they’re thirty. If your goal is a system of education which provides the greatest benefit to society - and isn’t that the role of the education system? - it is obviously better to just teach everyone intermediate math, so that those with an interest in pursuing it later actually, you know, have the background to do so.

2. You don’t want to do those things now. But you’re in friggin high school! No offense, but you have no idea what you’re going to end up wanting to do with your life. But because you don’t like math class now, before the part of your brain that understands delayed gratification has even finished developing, you want the education system to deprive you of the groundwork you need to work in a field that uses math forever? And it may very well be forever: later on in life, you’re going to need to have a job, you’re going to be making money, you might have a family, you will have all kinds of drains on your time, finances, and mental energy. This is the best time of your entire life to learn a new subject. All society wants from you is for you to learn new subjects.

And maybe get laid. Teenagers face a lot of weird pressure. But that’s neither here nor there.

In short: I don’t watch Glee and I don’t know who this hoodie-wearing little punk is, but if he were my student, I’d tell him to shut his mouth and get his head out of his ass, because (1) bitching about “imaginary” numbers is not clever, and (2) if he turned his attention away from his self-initiated colonoscopy and towards the blackboard, he might just learn something “useful.”

An apology (and confession) from the XKit Guy

I’m terribly sorry about the lack of updates since, well, January. As you know, I usually push updates for XKit nearly every day, try to add a new extension/feature every week, and try to reply to your asks in less than 24 hours. But for the last 2 months, updates were scarce, and in my inbox there are still asks from a couple of days ago waiting to be answered.

I can not apologize enough for this. The thing is, I was very busy with work and school, and in addition to those two, I’ve been working on something, for a long time. I did not post about it here since I didn’t know if I could actually, well, pull it off. I still can’t provide any details about it, but I hope it will be worth the wait. I will share the details very soon, hopefully.

I still read each and every ask I receive and working on trying to fix some of the bugs that I’ve received bug reports about, and fixes will be provided as soon as possible. And as soon as what I’m working on is finished, I will direct my full time and energy on adding new features.
